Anyone who accidentally got the early release to Affinity Photo 2.0.3 and Affinity Publisher 2.0.3 mentioned in this thread last week should be aware that the installs you got are NOT the official release of 2.0.3 which has a few additional last minute fixes. Because they are both called 2.0.3 your version will offer an autoupdate from 2.0.3 to 2.0.3 (yours is 2.0.3.1682 and the destination is the real 2.0.3.1688)
Suggestion: To get the official release, please install these latest release builds (which should simply install over the top of the ones you have)
    Affinity Photo for Windows Download
    Affinity Publisher for Windows Download
    Sorry this has happened.

You might find that it makes a nice work environment even if you're not doing desktop publishing. It gives you the main Designer and Photo functions within one application, which can be very useful. And if you do any text work in Designer, it gives you some nice enhancements (columns, linked text frames, auto-correct, hyperlinks, Find/Replace, etc.)

No offense, but I think this clearly is a bug, not a feature request.
And I may be taking it the wrong way, but this seems to reflect an attitude that "our way is the right way, no matter what the majority of our users say." It should be noted that I'm a huge fan and proponent of Serif and all things Affinity.
FWIW I have used, professionally, just about every dominant iteration of design software since Adobe Illustrator 88. [insert geriatric meme here] I can't remember any of them ever allowing you to interact with a locked or hidden layer; this has been the common sense default for a reason.
To say that a "Professional" design program that doesn't follow this standard UI practice is because it is missing a feature seems to be either a cop-out or arrogant.
Check my posts ... I am among your most staunch supporters. But I think looking at this differently would help. Maybe this isn't the 'official' position of the company, rather just one person's interpretation. But, either way, I have to think that the software would progress faster, and the community would embrace it, if the communication on this and a number of other issues was something more along the lines of...
"Oh, you're right. That is a clear UI standard, and we missed it here. We'll address this as soon as possible. Thanks for pointing this out."

(This is most definitely not to say anything must always be done a certain way 'cause it's always been done that way. I despise that sentiment; change is necessary to advance, but not change without a valid reason—especially when it makes something worse or harder to use. And overall, Serif is doing a great job at improving on many things that "have always been that way" to which we all applaud.)

_Th reacted to Gwobbler in When can I use calligraphic brushes in the affinity designer?
Many users have requested the calligraphic (angle-fixed) brushes feature since a long time ago, but even after five years of using it, it is still not added. I expected v2 to come out, but it still doesn't have that function.
Is there no plan to support call graphic brushes in serif?

The simplest solution would be to provide access to V1 alongside any purchase of V2 software. That may already be the case.

Thanks everyone for the information (and support!)  I did not know that Searchlight could search help menus but as I am also a Windows user, that does not help me.  I am a VSCode user (and Emacs and Vim) which all have command lines.  I find that tools with large numbers of commands (like Affinity) really benefit from this kind of user interface option. I would theorize that since these tools support Undo/Redo, they likely follow the "Command Pattern" (from the Gang of Four for you programmers) so it should not be horrible to offer a search capability because the commands within the system are implemented as more than just functions.

If for any reason you haven't used this in Figma or VS Code (or similar), it works like Spotlight on Mac. (I use Windows, but love this about Macs.) In VS Code, you type Control-Shift-P; in Figma it's Control-/. You get a 'modal' popup to search just about any setting, command, operation, etc. Huge time saver. Did I mention that already?

I am an infrequent user of Affinity but I love having such a powerful tool.  I wanted to do a simple cropping of a picture.  It took forever for me to find the select tool.  I was never able to find the crop command.  I ended up creating a new file and pasting the selected area.  If you had a capability of searching commands, I would have found it.  This kind of thing of common in programmer text editors like vscode or atom.  It would be wonderful here as well.  If I've missed it, let me know! thanks!

Would love to see Crop to Selection (i.e. whatever is surrounded by the marquee tool) added in a future update. Was very disappointed to hear it did not make it into the V2 release. I'm speaking primarily about Photo as that's the one I need it for, but I assume others would get benefit in the other apps too.
Please note this is an entirely separate discussion to the one regarding V1. There's an entirely separate forum for V2 so I'm assuming feedback related to V1 isn't applicable to V2 and thus this thread is needed.

To make it clear: I like the Affinities. A lot. And I highly appreciate the work Serif puts into it. But V2 is plagued by a massive amount of bugs, which reminds me of the (German?) term "Banana software, which ripes at the customer".
Has Serif to rethink QA? I have this feeling over some bugs, which should not be part of a retail version. So for now, I am using V2 for unimportant projects, learning to master the new software / features and bug hunting (not MY task so to speak).
Serif did not met the hype about V2, but I have high hopes, that they will fix the bugs and deliver a stable V2 I can enjoy for daily work.
I am sorry for the mild rant here from a faithful customer. 🙄

_Th reacted to Ash in Shortcut to rename selected layer. (Sorry, but it's getting embarrassing)
We could look at adding rename layer as a misc. shortcut available to set if anyone wants to. Should say too on Windows in V2 we added the ability after changing a layer name that tab would automatically take you to the next layer to rename which certainly helps massively when renaming a lot of layers. For some reason that didn't get added to macOS which we will get sorted!

True. Though must note it all depends on your Project/Workflow.
If not needing the main Personas inherent in Photo or Designer ….Tone Mapping, Develop, Liquify, Export (for Slices)…Publisher with Personas is almost the all in one, at least on iPad…just have to own all three still.

Good option! I noticed you can also copy a table from Publisher and paste it into Designer if that's a better workflow for anyone. Seems to retain all the functionality. Maybe down the road they'll include tables in Designer. (Although it's typically not the place to work with tables, I can see uses for it.) That said, I love that owning the full suite/universal license that allows this is affordable.

In general, this will happen if the document uses features which are not supported by that particular vector format.
I wish there were something similar to the preflight checks in Publisher which you could set to some vector export format which would point to layers which would export as raster and tell you why.

    Hi @BoulangerSeb
Affinity Designer offers this possibility with the view option "Bound to Canvas" switched off. Affinity Photo does not have this option.

_Th reacted to DarkClown in Proper feedback if command is not working
(Affinity Designer V2) It would be a good idea to give the user a proper feedback if a command is not working.
E.g. if you try to expand the stroke of a vector path with a brush (what hardly ever works) - Affinity V2 just goes over the non functional command without any notice. Effectively nothing happens. You have to select the node tool, click on the object to realise that the command did not do a thing. It also would be helpful to tell the user why the commmand could not be executed.
    Cheers, Timo

🤣 All this whining over the pricing just cracks me up. And really misses the point...
The truth is Serif should pay me to use their software!
After all, I'm investing my time, using my hard drive space, consuming my electricity ... I could go on and on. Seriously(not), why should I have paid even the ridiculous give-away price I did for the v1 software since it wasn't absolutely perfect? And why should I pay another ridiculously-low price for the seriously-upgraded and still not absolutely perfect software? I mean $99 USD for all three apps available to me on all three platforms? C'mon! Look, I don't have to take this! Ad0be is having a sale! I can just go other there and plop down $480 bucks for an entire year! OK, I'm a little short on funds, so I'll just pay the $82 a month. 'Cause ... math. And when I stop paying for that software, it'll still work fine, I just won't get any updates. Am I right or what?!
    </sarcasm>
OK, sorry. Silly rant over. It's just frustrating because the Affinity suite is the best alternative to Goliath and their hideous subscription model, and it's dirt cheap no matter how you slice it.
That said, Serif must improve certain things if they want to continue to grow and/or remain competitive. This is the golden hour, the absolute best time for them to gain (and keep) serious market share, something I think we all want to happen. Pricing (new or upgrade) is not the issue for them, or us. It is getting the basics right. This forum and the V1 forum are full of examples of the basics being missed. I am a huge supporter, and I want very much to see this endeavor succeed. However, the vitriol many hold towards Ad0be means the field is wide open for someone to step in with a more solid offering. For me, I'm cheering on the Serif team and hoping they'll be the ones to slay the giant.
    Cheers.

_Th reacted to elguapo in Global command palette
In many powerful modern applications there is a global command palette: Atom, Notion, even Figma has it.
The idea is you press Cmd-P and write anything you want, it searches and find something immediately. You can gain access to almost anything with one shortcut + keyword.
I find that I'm constantly using similar feature in "Help" search field to find lot of commands, fillters, selections, presets etc. Basically doing the same stuff. So I propose to transfer it into power command palette, adding more global connection to all things inside all 3 powerful apps.
E.g. now I edit a big document and need to select all raster objects + several specific shapes only in 1 artboard. With such command palette I could've write for example "select raster objects + scope artboard". And that 's it.
This also turns Affinity products more power user- and developer- friendly and opens enormous gate for adding bits of code/formulas to operate and automate things.
