Johannes reacted to Ash in Canva
To followup on some of my comments yesterday, we are today enshrining our commitment to the Affinity community in 4 pledges made by the Affinity and Canva teams.
You can read about them here.
We do truly believe the coming together of Affinity and Canva is only going to be a good thing for our customers, staff and the development of our apps. We very much hope you will all continue to be with us on this journey.
All the best,
Ash

The worst thing
The worst thing is that with subscription models you can be locked out of your own creations – even for political reasons #AdobeVenezuela. It's extortion.

And once you've subscribed, it's even harder to switch to another software company because you have to be subscribed to open old documents.
So never, never, never subscribe if file formats from other software companies can't be fully read like .indd .afdesign .afphoto .afpub!
I stayed on Adobe CS6 for years for this reason and I will never subscribe if there is even the slightest suspicion that I could be locked out of my own work, even if I have unsubscribed.

How long do you think this lasts, with the amount of acquisitions recently Canva looks like it will make itself more presentable to future investors and when the company is public nothing matters except the shareholder value. So I don't have much hope for Canva in the future.

Yet...

They'll float.
Well, as Ash said. Because of all of this there's no pressure to come out with a V3 soon and they can concentrate on everything they planned for V2. I'm thinking V2 is the end of the road.

'Canva has made several acquisitions in the past but is building up to an eventual public listing in late 2025 or 2026'

So it appears Canva is padding out its portfolio. I think we can all guess what might happen once investors get their public exit...

Johannes got a reaction from Charles Osei-Wusu in We need to talk about artificial intelligence.
What Adobe does now with Generative Fill in Photoshop beta is impressive and even more useful compared to what Midjourney or Dall-e do.
It is not perfect yet but way better than what I have available right now.
Dear Affinity team do you work on more AI integration into the suite? I hope so.

Oh, they did build an alternative. They just didn’t copy it (completely). Affinity apps lack some features and provide some that Adobye apps lack.
I hope your CS6 supporting OS and hardware will work for you as long as you need it.

I am sorry. I don't understand halve of what you are saying. Especially why you wouldn't just generate an .icc profile by calibrating your printer (with the desired paper) and use this profile for softproofing.

I can and I do use Affinity to produce color managed output on a daily basis.
This made my income for about the last 25 years mainly with Adobe products but the last 5 years mainly with Affinity products.
I use a fully calibrated workflow in the same manner I did with Adobe products. No HDR yet.
My two main outputs are files for Web in sRGB and Print in ISO-coatedv2/3
Input sources sRGB eciRGB AdobeRGB P3 and more.
Making CMYK-PDFs with embedded wide gamut RGB images for printers with larger color space works.
There are some inconveniences though:
Softproofing with a layer doesn’t make much sense. It should be a view setting.
There has to be a way to preprint-check PDF-files. I still do that with Acrobat Pro.
And more ...

As a pro I am almost happy with Affinity's color management.
I miss paper simulation.
I miss printing from Affinity (with preserving CMYK values eg for black fonts). I have to export to PDF and print from there.
off topic: I have to have an Acrobat-like preflight for print ready PDFs. Affinity only checks before exporting. I also need it afterwards.
I have to say that PDFs exported by Affinity have way less warnings in Acrobat preflight than PDFs exported by InDesign. Most of the time I simply get a green Checkmark ✅
