  1. Are there any new beta's since 1.4.2 on the app store, my last beta refuses to run now.
  2. Of course it is? What did you not understand? for example is there a pressing need for a raw develop module in Affinity Designer? I'd say not but perhaps you can see an advantage in complicating designer to include this function. There is no need to preload every possible thing you might need at some point , maybe 1 day this month. Lean and fast beats bloated and slow.
  3. I like being on the bleeding edge if only I could see it :( Printer asked me to include bleed but I can only see it when i export to pdf
  4. I've had designer for a while now and more to the spirit of this thread I like having designer and photo seperate, for one some tools are for bitmaps some are for vectors its better to have working tools where you need them. not grayed out because they don't apply to the object you are working on. Keep things in context and it gets a lot simpler. What are you going to use a node tool for on a bitmap for instance. Kind of surprised i've ended up in desgner most of the time. Only wish I could see the bleed lines
  5. Raising Shadows in Develop seems to lose detail as a live filter in the main module it is much better. To be honest I would choose light room over affinity photo for developing an image because the results are much better currently I will try the Apple raw engine and see if that can equal ACR.
  6. Thanks for that it is useful. I Would still would like to add additional grids as an overlay. Also one thing lightroom can do is allow you an overlay for the loupe view to illustrate the effect of matting allowing you to fill the frame with the subject but without going under or touching the matt. cheers john
  7. Hi Its great there is the rule of thirds triangles and golden ratio. The golden ratio however only has 2 of 8 possible orientations. having the other 6 would be useful. There are other guide theorys too that could arguably be added if we could make our own presets for cropping guides maybe as a loadable svg cropping layer it would be excellent. thanks John
  8. I think part of the problem is pdf, I even had a go at it with illustrator and it wasn't pleasant. I've developed a better technique taking an existing text from the pdf copying the text and font size and then over laying it on the original text which finds me the leading and tracking. By making notes I can figure out how to format my text so it fits in. The problem with pdf is that no formating information remains as such and basically over laying a new paragraph over an original paragraph seems to be the only way to figure out that lost information. Hopefully the text Styling will not be too long :) cheers and thanks for your post.
  9. Hi I understand style essentially is fill and stroke so if i make a style i'm pretty much saving a colour. I know I can set up a text font size and leading and select it to be default and then when i create a new text frame I can paste without format and I think the leading and font size and color that i set as default should be applied. I am not sure if that applies across documents or not. It would be quite handy to set up a page with default headlines paragraphs and subheadings. I am not sure if its possible to take a paragraph font / leading style and apply it to another existing text frame. maybe if i set my default go to the existing box select all cut and paste without format. Something I am doing which isn't working very well. I have an existing pdf document with the text styles I want and affinity opens it quite well sometimes changes case on me but it does create text boxes from the imported pdf file. It does use the correct font and colour for each section. sometimes that might be 3 text types/styles in a single text box. I am trying to take these text styles from the imported pdf file and apply the layout to my new text frames. It seems to use the correct font but the leading is all wrong. E.g the original paragraph might be roughly 11 point text on 12 point leading but if I set the default from the imported text box I seem to get the right font but the font will be 11 point on 11 point leading. Not the approximately 12 point leading that I was expecting. Is there anyway i can recover the formatting from the imported pdf file or do I have to create something similar from scratch. Still beating indesign it can't open a pdf file at all :)
  10. Thanks for your help, i'm just learning affinity designer and it does nice things, just not all the things I would like it to :) I'm producing a multipage report and I'd like it to look consistent. Your suggestions should help avoid a few head aches, it is a pity there seems to be no way to format to a pre defined style. I'm starting to work with a scratch pad with different styles. I'm so new to this I couldnt figure out why sometimes resizing the box resized the text and other times reflowed the text. It is working wonders with pdf files.
  11. I am trying to figure out how to make text frames consistent with each other and its becoming a headache If I want to save a text colour i can save it as a style but it seems that is all that is saved. but there seems to be no way to save a font paragraph spacing ect. I think if I create a text frame and then fill it then i can resize the frame if i just paste text then resizing resizes the text instead of the frame. Pasting text seems to come in as ariel and has some formatting applied but I can't figure out how to get pasted in text to format as other text frames I'd like to pick an existing paragraph and copy its attributes to the new paragraph but i don't know how. It seems that the best I can do is copy a text box and then manually write in the text i actually want. Is there no better way available. All I am trying to do is make my text consistent and it isn't and it is very frustrating. Is affinity a long way off having consistent text? cheers John
  12. I've just been using this beta and did a frequency separation on a photo and it looks great but when i open the exported jpeg or png in preview or lightroom the tone is way off what i am looking at in affinity photo beta? Am i doing something wrong in the export?
  13. Hope this doesn't mean there will be no more versions for lion. the previous beta works great on my macbook.
  14. Thank you! the previous beta was unusable for me on my 10.7.5 mac due to the graphics card support, but everything seems normal now with the right hand panel now displaying correctly. The Photo Persona has the histogram, however it is missing from the develop persona as ... Ok I got it back in separated mode and "reset studio" has brought it back in. Looking very nice now, 1.3.5.2 had me worried
  15. This Beta is broken on osx 10.7.5 macbook Most of the gui is missing and the image is invisible. It does appear to load images but If I can't see it I can't work on it. Ok in preferences there are use hardware opengl ticked and below that use internal graphics un ticked with both both unticked things look normal now. no still problems right hand toolbox is showing a checkerbox pattern rather than tools. but i can see my image now.
  16. That is a pretty good idea , google does a nice job of translating, due to the lousy euro sterling exchange rate I find shopping amazon.es and amazon.de simple as google translates it for me to near perfect english on the fly. I imagine english to spanish german ect would be similarly efficient.
  17. Are you forced to supply only through the app store? Generally it seems that most software seems to have a full price and an upgrade price not sure how it works with apples app store if an affinity product or module could be a qualifier for an upgrade price. There are a few issues with the app store for one there is the 30% that apple take from each sale, ok its counterbalanced by exposure and greater sales. Then there are the ipc rules apparently topaz has to cripple their plugins to comply with apples rules. Once I had Affinity Photo i have no need for apple to introduce me to her sister Designer. One thing i really dislike about apple is the scorched earth approach to applications my old macbook maxes out at 10.7.5 and apple replace an app that works with lion with one that requires yosemite although i have no upgrade path to yosemite. Adobes as bad the trouble i had to buy version 5 of lightroom they wouldnt sell me a serial number at all.
  18. I bought photo, and maybe could go for designer later (i really wouldn't use it much) but it would be nice if there was some incentive / loyalty bonus to buy the second program. Also other parts as the suite develops. . .
  19. when you say had to write a service, was that with automator ? I'd love to hear a little more on the details of that. I apologize for straying off topic but its interesting :)
  20. It is less than ideal, very much so, being on a unix base it shouldn't be too hard to pipe data from one program to another and the problem is no obvious way to do it within affinity photo. lightroom's external editor function is quite powerful. Basically the user sets up the format of the call. The colour space and the file format generally psd or tiff. so it would be lightroom decides to run gimp with the current image as a command line argument. kind of like $>gimp myphoto.psd when gimp terminates a return code is generated and then lightroom can open myphoto.psd with the changes made in gimp. Ideally keeping the before and after in the history. There may be no change to the offered file maybe the user resized the image in gimp and saved it out to email it. There may be additional layers in the psd (which may be hard to replicate) but essentially all lightroom needs to know is I gave gimp myphoto.psd now it has finished with it i can load the new version back in and carry on working with it. obviously I can hit save in affinity photo and select the file type then open the file i just saved in finder with another program do something with it save it from that program and reopen in affinity photo. Its the same difference apart from i'm working for the computer instead of the computer working for me! :) Obviously it would be nice if plugin authors would be co operative with affinity photo, hopefully as infinity photo's user base grows they will see an opportunity to target affinity photo as well as adobe photoshop and lightroom. An editin module is not ideal but it should be relatively easy to do, even if most popular plugins worked it'd still be handy.
  21. File reveal in finder then select open with ... Seems to be the easiest work around so far, pass a psd file to the various apps for plugin's, thats my plan for now.
  22. I can not find the "share" menu item which is a pity, I am looking for some external editing options. A lot of plugins can work standalone. E.g Onone perfect photo for example say i use affinity photo to remove an object in the scene i'd like to next do a b&w conversion using perfect photo as an external editor do the editing and return to affinity. i guess i can do it as a file save then reopen the file with another program but it would be nice to automate that.
