For proofreading I think the text should be in the layout for checking hyphenation etc.
If you are worried about the file size you can set dpi to 1 and quality to 0 in PDF export. This will get you a low resolution copy PDF. But as for now there is no simple way to print graphics as "boxes only".

I usually use the old Photoshop technique, very simple:
    enter quick mask pressing Q
draw a gradient mask by pressing G and dragging from white to black
press Q, returns to normal mode activating the mask
use curves (cmd-M) or levels (cmd-L) to lighten the nonmasked side.

Some photographers prefer to have neutral grey card or guaranteed grey object in their shoot so they can instantly set colour balance by eyedropper. I have used this time to time.
Eyes tend to adapt to any lighting or colour cast so eye calibration can drift a lot...

Fixx reacted to Gaunilo in User interface not user friendly
I agree that the user interface is not really well done.
It is also not consistent. Using the tab-key to jump from one input frame to the next works sometimes but not always.
Especially bad when using colour. If you input the colour via CMYK you really can't use the tab as it jumps to all kinds of places but not to the obvious ones.

Then there are text elements. You have one tab for Zeichen (Character?) and one for typography with the ligatures etc. This would clearly be sought for in character not in a seperate window.
The labeling in other languages – i.e. German – is sometimes downright confusing (or you could say: wrong?).
Lists are in paragraphs not text etc.

I understand the herculean task of making such a program from scratch but with the user interface you wouldn't have to start from scratch as Fnuxus pointed out.
There were several well designed UI already around.

While I appreciate the difficulty of translation into different languages it is sometimes hard to find things that are labelled in an unusual way.

Is this the biggest problem of Publisher? NO – that would be the missing footnotes.
Is it an annoying one while working? Yes, repeatedly.

But, I expect it to get better over the years.

Personally I agree with you, but a lot of people seem to be waiting for it! I might use APub on iPad for quick edits, simple documents etc, but I certainly wouldn't attempt any big/complex publications. To be honest, I'm never sure how people can use an iPad for any serious work, but I've only just started "playing" with one, so I'm no expert! 😁

You could try open the attached Designer file in Photo. I think if bleed is set in original Designer file it carries over to Photo too.

In Capture One you can alternatively do "Edit with...".
By that way Capture One will create the tif file (including your edits) and hand it over to Photo. You can then directly edit it in Photo without going through the "Develop" persona.

This works nicely. I also tried typing "*150%" after the width/height value and that worked too, but just entering "150%" is much slicker.

C1, DXO Photolab and LR are the three big ones. Others are smaller players. It is debatable what are the differences in quality, speed and workflow with the 3 big ones (there certainly are differences though!). Also smaller players may well be good enough likewise considering quality, speed and workflow.

All layers should have a lock icon. I dont know whats going on. I dont know whos logic it is a serif but this needs to change ASAP. I hate how theres no lock icon on layers. Instead, the lock icon is at the very top right corner of the layers panel. Why? Just why?! Whos logic is this? Like, thats like taking the checkmark icon to each layer, removing it from each layer, and putting it at the top right corner. Its just so wrong. You need that check mark icon and you need the lock icon. Youre forcing me to go all the way to the top right corner of the layers panel just to view or hide my layer and now I have to lock my layer by going up there as well. Its ridiculous. The check mark icon and the lock icon NEED to be on each layer because they relate to the layers! I'm so upset right now. Whos logic is this at serif? Its so wrong and its so simple to put a lock icon next to the check mark icon. You literally do it when a layer is locked.
PLEASE add a lock icon to all layers.

In fairness to the author of the video, he also left out Photoshop which is widely used for digital painting. Though, as a counter-point I would argue that leaving Photoshop and Affinity Photo/Designer out is a bit of a blunder when a program like Photoshop is a standard among professionals. Just for a point of reference, pretty much everyone in my class who studies game graphics (2D and 3D) uses Photoshop, with only myself using Affinity and a couple of others who use other programs like Krita. As a former Photoshop user, out of all the softwares I've tried Affinity is the closest to the Photoshop experience on the market. If you come from a Photoshop background it is either Affinity or going Krita as a 2D artist pretty much (not because Krita is like Photoshop, but because it is a well rounded package that is free).
I also noticed that Aaron heavily values authentic realism when it comes to brushes, something that I really don't value much at all. While I can understand why some would value having that kind of experience, I simply am of the opinion that the strength of digital art is that it is not traditional. You can pretty much create any type of texture and make it a brush in digital and you can also take big shortcuts to speed up workflow. Most art programs can already do this, so I have come to value other aspects of an art program instead.
If I would rate the value of an art program it would be on these criteria; a) the responsiveness and accuracy of the brush strokes, b) strong layer management (i.e. clipping masks, merging/separating, linking layers together, etc.), c) strong non-destructive image editing capabilities in the form of adjustment layers, liquify, etc, d) overall performance, and e) solid selection tools. That's it. Sure, there are other things that are also important to have, but if a program lacks in any of these specific categories it just isn't good enough in my eyes.
So yeah, Aaron and I are just on completely different sides of the spectrum when it comes to the topic of what is a good digital art program. Which is honestly fine. People can create whatever art with any tool they like as long as it fits their needs. One thing I think both he and I can agree on is that Photoshop is no longer a necessity when it comes to wanting to become a digital artist. There are plenty of choices to pick from nowadays. Even my own school allows for Photoshop alternatives and I was able to pass my introductory 2D course with distinction using all three Affinity programs.

Fixx reacted to R C-R in Set Selection to select whatever it touches without fully selecting the whole object.
I am not sure if there is an equivalent on Windows but on Macs, holding down the CTRL (Control) key toggles (reverses) the selection behavior.
So if you are using a Mac & usually want it not to select objects unless they are fully surrounded by the marquee, turn off the option. When you do want to select partially covered objects, hold down the CTRL key. This is a 'live' toggle -- IOW, you can hold down the key at any time before you release the mouse button to make the selection.

Fixx reacted to William Overington in I really need to export text
I am wondering if the best way out of this problem is to offer to pay for the translators to buy Affinity Publisher.
Then the translators could change the text in the fields that contain text but leave the things such as 0.75 mm unchanged.
But even then there could be big problems.
    I tried a test.
I copied the line of text decribing the Material of the first product.
    Stahlblech verzinkt und beschichtet
So, I used, just as a test to get an idea, Google translate.
I translated it to Czech (though I did also have a look at what it is in English).
The Czech has a z caron character in it, which is  beyond the first 256 characters of Unicode, so a good test.
So I then copied that Czech text (accepting that I do not know the provemance of thar translation, but this is a test) onto the clipboard and tried to get it into the Affinity Publisher document.
Deleting the original text first does not work as the font size is then lost.
So shorten the original to the first letter then paste the Czech text, then remove the first letter of the original.
But I needed to widen the text box too.
Now I am not an expert user of Affinity Publisher but I have some experience with it, and I got it to work
But I did just one field.
However, the translated text was in Unicode. If it had come back in a text file and that text file was using an 8-bit character representation with the Central Euopean code page for the 128 8-bit characters starting with binary 1 there could be big problems.
So the question that occurs to me is that even if you could export the text in a plain text file, when you get the translated plain text file back from the translators in a Unicode plain text file, how do you proceed?
But I suppose that if you have a client who is willing to pay for the time it will take, then fine.
    William

You can do that with "normal" color samplers too. That has nothing to do with neglecting to set the current color upon sampling.
That's the entire issue, for which no one has provided a justification for. Think it through: What is the most-common use case?
    1. You want to sample a color and do nothing with it, ever (this would apply to the toolbar color picker, which doesn't doesn't set the current color and doesn't save the sample)
    2. You want to sample a color and do nothing with it until later
    3. You want to set the color of something (or the current working color) by sampling the color of something else
Anyone who argues that #3 isn't the most-common scenario, and not coincidentally is the default in the vast, vast majority of graphics applications, forfeits all credibility.
And if you want to sample a color without changing the color of anything, there's a simple, and most importantly obvious solution that is standard across entire operating systems: deselect all. That is much more realistic and discoverable than expecting people to guess that there's a third color picker buried amongst the tools on the tool palette, when the application displays two others most of the time.
