I too want this feature. It's such a simple workflow I am accustomed with:
You select something in the image; You go to Image > Crop selection.
(Like that. a two-step process. It shouldn't be necessary to create another file in another tab, nor manually align cropping edges) You export, save, whatever suits your needs; You close the file. Alternatively:
You select something in the image; You switch to the crop tool, to notice your selection is already marked as the cropping area; You confirm the action (either enter or double click); You export, save, whatever suits your needs; You close the file. Photoshop has it, Photopea has it, they say even GIMP has it… It's not any game changing advanced process that shifts paradigms and may restructure the whole UI. It's simply the option to crop the canvas to what has been selected.

There is no difference if you use shapes or drawn paths. Try Layer>Geometry>

It would help some people a lot if toolbars were customizable and those setups were saveable as presets. Aiffinity could even supply several setups for different tasks (preferably with panel setups – much like InDesign workplaces).

But when you print it, does it print halftoned? That is, edges are built with raster dots, not device pixels? I am not sure.
Anyway, quality may be good enough. Glad if it works this way.

I am not sure if i is worth the trouble to try to coax sharp lineart output from Publisher. It just cannot do maximum sharpness. You can probably get close but that is too labour intensive and inefficient.
I would almost recommend to try to vectorize your art (if it is even remotely simple enough for it), or try to use an older copy of InDesign.

You have all made your points in these recent posts but enough is enough. These are community support forums and I cannot believe some of you do not understand others do not have the same priorities and perceptions as you. These forums are not about what you think others should think. If you want that sort of discussion go to twitter. ANY more posts about what you perceive to be other people's motives will result in a timeout or full ban. Period. You are here to discuss Affinity software functionality not the motives of those who post here.
If you disagree then hover over someones avatar and use the ignore option on them.

Fixx reacted to martinskopal in Placed PDF renders with completely wrong fonts
Yes, on MacOS, the best way I found now since posting my first message is to open the pdf in Preview, go to the Print dialogue and save the file as PostScript xyz.ps file. It is then converted to curves, and opens up correctly in Publisher. A direct Save as… eps is not possible in Preview - and in all the other, non-Adobe Programs I found in said timeframe. pdfToolbox seems like a fine solution, but at 500€ it is a bit of an expensive solution for that problem. But thanks for the tip.
I have found some of those threads now, they are enlightening  But it is remarkable as to not addressing this subject from Serif. I'm not a lawyer, but as loads of rather really small companies just implemented exactly that functionality, this strand of argument is quite frankly beyond me. And the technical feasibility should not be that high, for exactly the same reason. I don't need pdf editing - that's just not what pdf is for.

    Absolutely no problem!
Serif simply hasn't programmed/included what is called "pdf pass-through" at this time. They are going to add this capability in the future--we just don't know when it will arrive. The net result is that currently every pdf is opened as if one intends to edit it. This applies even if a pdf is placed with the downside that one may not notice font substitution happening until one *very* carefully inspects the resulting pdf out of APub, etc. Dangerous is a kind word I would use.
You got it. The only viable way is to use an application or a command-line application such as GhostScript to convert type to curves. I beieve that on the Mac one can use Preview to save a pdf as an eps to do this...but I use a PC so my memory may be off.
I use pdfToolbox to convert type in pdfs to curves, especially ads, and I often do so even when using QXP and ID. Acrobat can convert type to curves, the procedure depends on the version.
There are a couple very long threads about this subject.

Fixx reacted to Sideshowlol in Set White Point, Photoshop-style
Tools to enable the setting of “black”, “white” and “mid-grey” points for an image are hugely important for so many reasons.
In PS it is possible to preset the colour values for each of these points and then a single targeted click on the image being corrected for each point will remap all the colour values.
Some people use the tool in PS to simply set 100% white and black values, and to remove a colour cast from an image by choosing a mid-grey for the gamma. But it is very much more powerful than that and a fantastically useful tool in the PS tool set.
Has AF any tool to match PS in this department yet? If so, please can someone tell me where it is? I have to keep my copy of PS 7 on an older Mac to allow me to do this one thing for my images.
I appreciate very much what Serif have created with their suite of apps for designers. However, there are certain tools still missing from AF and AD that make a huge difference to my workflow. An easy way to remap colours in an image through an “eye-dropper” type of tool would be tremendously helpful.
PS had this ability since at least version 2, when I first used it, and so I find it hard to understand why something similar hasn’t yet been implemented in AF, especially considering the other fancy things it can do. It’s mid-2020 now. I am hoping that this will be the year of the white-point, black-point & gamma setting tool!

Yes. You are right. I realized that the "crappy bitmap" is in reality low preview of the vector SVG (my fault). In illustrator it pastes as editable. I simply wonder if it could be feasible to add option to export pasteboard the same way as illustrator copypaste to indesign. Maybe not, but it would be lovely.

Fixx reacted to Ray 2 in Paint thickness.
Hello Folks,   Just signed up today so this is my first post.  Attached is a pic of a model I created in Siemens Solid Edge. I tried to get some edge wear on the paint. So used the sharpen brush until I wore away some material, then went over with a very soft / weak blur brush. I would like to give the illusion of paint thickness as I think this attempt looks to flat.  How could I achieve the wanted effect, maybe a totally different technique is required.
I did actually try 2 indentical renders one with a steel finish and one with the Blue paint finish and tried to combine the blue on top of the bare steel. with a view to somehow scraping away the blue layer to reveal the steel layer. but.. no success   Can that actually be done in Affinity photo ?
    Regards,
    Raymond.

OP does not really need to adjust leading override, but leading. And those are unconfortably far apart in UI. OP could though indeed use leading override instead as that is at least in the same panel as font size.

Fixx reacted to cinemachine in Ability to remap modifier keys back to the MAC standard when transforming an image
I know this has been discussed in other topics, but I saw one of the moderators suggest someone start a new thread to make sure it doesn't get lost in the shuffle as an upcoming feature request.
Many here, including myself, have voiced their displeasure in not being able to remap the modifier keys back to the Mac standard when transforming an image.
Currently, all of the Affinity products use their own "proprietary" set of modifier keys instead of using the standard keys that have been used for decades in every other image editing application on the Mac platform, those being the "option" key to scale an object symmetrically from the center, "shift" to constrain the aspect ration and "command" to transform independently.
Please give us the option to switch to this standard if we so choose.  Thank you.

Fixx reacted to dcrosby in [IDML Implemented] How can I open Indesign (indd and idml) Files in Publisher?
I understand what you're saying and agree completely. Everyone's needs are different and Adobe's had 30 years to fine tune it's software, innovate and buy their way to industry standard, and leverage their success in order force customers to do things they really hate doing. Affinity is competing with a 800 lb gorilla in Adobe and many of the "missing features" are only missing because they exist in Adobe software. Are Adobe users complaining that they don't have live previews or that InDesign can't open PS directly in the app? Are they complaining about features that no one has thought of yet? Affinity has to have everything Adobe has and more.
That said, Affinity has been well received by consumers, pro-sumers, disgruntled old-timers, and various digital artists who don't need to be "compatible." But they've reached the point where seasoned, working designers have become interested and have certain expectations which have to be met. This is where I see much of the negativity towards the software and these folks are totally correct. Affinity needs to move fast to plug these holes. Publisher is probably the most important part of the trinity. It's also the least mature and undoubtedly the most difficult to get right.
I'm holding on to InDesign CS6 as if my life depended on it but what if someone were to gift me a brand new Mac that only ran Catalina. I shudder to think of it, lol.

    Hi @mayfly
Stiff opposition or the like from a small core of forum users is quite normal here and I know for a fact that new users (customers) simply quit the forum because of it. I would be surprised if Serif didn’t care. They do.

I also know Serif do read forum posts here and thus also your legitimate concerns and good suggestions. So you have been heard. You just won’t get an official answer to your suggestions. You will get support though from their staff. Perhaps they will take your suggestions into account, perhaps not.
My personal advice to Serif for v2 of Photo is not new features but a complete usability overhaul. It really, really needs it.
Thank you for taking your time to share your thoughts. You are not alone. And as I said the right people in Nottingham will read your post.

Maybe, indeed, like Jowday suggested, there could be an option to display decimals in values defined as percent in the Preferences > User Interface?
