  1. Probably the reason is that masks are much more powerful way to add transparency.
  2. If you use Apple's Migration Assistant (as you should) you do not have to think about license transfers.
  3. I think AP should aim to be a Photoshop killer in areas of prepress and basic photo editing. These are quite well defined tool sets and provide focused development target.
  4. Note that you cannot have true 1-bit lineart in AP/AD, only greyscale (or RGB/CMYK) version. No such work space available. Possibly greyscale is good enough for you?
  5. AP does not yet crop and scale to size, you have to scale separately. Let's hope this will be added in next version.
  6. File size in megabytes varies according format specifics, compression scheme etc so it is not so useful value. What matters is pixel dimensions and bit depth.
  7. Of course. As a rule of thumb 16 GB RAM is too little if file sizes are regularly more than 10 GB, that is what I am saying. And 10 GB can be achieved quite easily with AP file structure. Lol.
  8. SWOP works in the U.S., I you are located elsewhere it may be something else. Europe, it is FOGRA39.
  9. I have 16 GB RAM and there were slowdowns when I got to 10+ GB range in file size. I would recommend 16 GB for graphics work, more if you are serious.
  10. Copy mountain path, paste it (it positions exactly as original), select pen tool and add points following the arc area (does not have to be exact, just stay within coloured arc area) and when you close path at the other end of you can fill it as you like. Change stroke to 0 pt and move to back.
  11. AP can export to 1-bit gif and png (using black and white preset) though it has no 1-bit work space. How to make a PDF of that is another question. And it should be noted that AP always dithers in export which complicates issue even more. Even if art is prepared to look 1-bit in 8-bit mode I suspect some dithering will stay in borderlines.
  12. Except that all fonts that professionals use allow it because print production industry is 99,9% based on PDF:s with embedded fonts.
  13. Page layout apps can place PDFs as "passthrough", that is, embed PDF as it is to an another document. Fonts display as they are embedded in PDF. You then cannot edit contents, but can threat PDF as an object (scale, rotate etc). AD cannot do this. Vector graphics apps generally can open PDFs (and often also place as editable) and then all objects in PDF are editable. That means text is also editable but as it is very complicated to use embedded fonts usually app uses system font in opened PDF. That means fonts are usually replaced with some another font if identical to embedded is not available in system. Generally all modern graphics/layout apps embed used fonts to PDF so that is not a problem.
  14. I was also appalled when I first saw two pointer tools... surely one is enough by use of mod keys? That was when I moved from Pagemaker to InDesign. I have adjusted since.
  15. and request some other company to create animation app. Actually there are several good tries which could be repaired to working solutions.
  16. Do you know if these services truly remove cropped items or do they just hide them as Acrobat does? It would be easier to generate ebooks from PDFs if there were no extra content like page numbers and headers/footers.
  17. I think it does not matter in which order non-destructive effects are as AP is pretty smart.
  18. There is a traditional order (set black/white point/gamma/colour balance, scale, colour separate, sharpen) but as AP can use non-destructive tools it should not matter (well, CMYK sep is destructive). At least I wish AP is smart enough to apply effects optimal way.
  19. Are you asking about file associations? Select one raw file, Get Info (cmd-i), select Open with: (your review app), select Change all..
  20. Is there a difference between grad transparent blur and blur with varying value? I guess there is. That is, optimally you would have blur radius 0 in the other end and 100 in the other. Using grad mask to mix sharp image and the blurred one does not create same appearance. This would work If you could make a area grad blur where you could set blur values to different nodes. So far I do not know any app that can do this kind of effect (maybe some PS focus plugins can?) and in practice people use that transparency fake with good results.
  21. Sounds like vector trace is what you need. You must either trace the image by hand or use some tool to make automatic trace (this may not give exact enough results and you need to hand correct anyway). Line art is two colour (black and white generally) image, still pixels which may show if enlarged a lot.
  22. Indeed, accessing channels is now overly complicated.
  23. It is quite customary that shops printing large pieces ask PDFs to be made to certain scale. 50% or 25% for example.
