Affinity Photo - Create an animated gif
Fixx replied to Tibreizh's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Well... no. Seems Photoshop is the only simple one that can handle PDF layers. GIMP probably too if you can figure out the interface. Maybe Krita. I had 20 years ago a simple GIF animator app that could produce beautiful animations from Photoshop layers, but I guess this market just vanished when PS gained GIF animation ability. -
Do not format the Word document too much. Page properties etc (page size, margins, master pages, columns, styles) should be set in Publisher. The good old way would be to import Word document as "just text" and ignore formatting, flow text through pages, letting Publisher create new pages as necessary. Then select all and set all to body text. Then go though the text page by page and apply other styles as necessary. More modern way would be to use Word styles after import – that would mean that Word document has styles used for headings, body, captions etc. Edit imported word styles

Text renders a bit differently but looks about the same to me. First AD export to PNG, second hires export to PDF and Photoshop render and save to PNG: and last simple screenshot:

Change Business Card Color
Fixx replied to ozphoto's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Is grey printed or is it card stock colour? If printed then just add a coloured rectangle that covers the "page". Also, if the card is made the good old way use Pantone colours, if it goes digital printing it can be RGB or CMYK, depending the process. -
publisher to epub workflow ?
Fixx replied to myaffinities's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
PDF way may leave a lot to be corrected (possibly in fixed layouts it works better?) If reflowable epub is needed I would prepare text in Word and do the epub with tools like Jutoh or Sigil. -
So, you have OCRd a book and need some way to add specific diacritics to characters using Publisher? Correct way would be to find a font that has right diacritics. That may be a challenge if you are not familiar how to find diacritic or how to make sure right diacritics are included. Easy cheat if there is not too much of the affected text is to use inline graphic added like @iconoclast explained. Adding diacritics to existing font is something typographers do all the time but takes some experience in the field.

Binarizing a selection
Fixx replied to ateleman's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
How would that help? The aim is to threshold the selection mask, not the actual image. Channel/mask handling is not AP's forte. As far as I can see there is no way to threshold actual selection (as would be the first idea). It should though be possible to make selection a layer that can be thresholded and turn that back to mask. One of the workarounds that are plenty in Affinity environment.. -
I so wish there was automation possible, like sequential or successive styles for imported ext. This automation above works only when you type stuff (I think). For imported text you have to click style for each section. At least it is possible to automate the jump to next page with flow/keep options.

Poster Design inside of a Book

Cannot be done with book binding but saddle stitching should be ok. You have supply separate file for centerfold and instruct press house carefully.- 6 replies

If your document is slightly smaller than A4 but crop marks reach farther than A4 you could just print centered 100 % and let the printer crop out crop mark part that reach too far. Or you could print to A3 sheet. Probably there indeed is something we do not understand.

It is just you. We others can do only thresholded greyscale document and export it to 1-bit PNG. There is no 400 dpi limit in Affinity, it is just the ruler adjustment that stops at 400. You can numerically enter quite big numbers.

Book Cover Designs Into PDF
Fixx replied to Angelika's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Probably text is 100K and background is rich black (C89M78Y62K97 or about, depending profile.). That is how it usually is preferred (not black on black, but 100K on coloured background). You CAN make your text rich black if you want to (like C90M80Y20K100, you just cannot push all to max as paper would get too wet) but text may not be as crisp as 100K as it will probably be slightly misregistered and have partly halftoned edges. Register problems would not probably matter here. It is also possible that there are problems with colour profiles but it is not possible to say without seeing th -
Word count in Affinity Publisher
Fixx replied to vdamjanovski's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher on Desktop
Former... Serif did not foresee workflows where word/character counting would be important. Character count is usually done in word processing. When I have had to specify story lengths I have simply copied sample story from layout to word to do the counting. -
EVERYTHING is exporting blurry
Fixx replied to brodydez's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
If you want to change nominal dpi without resample you have to do it with Document>Resize Document... command. As you found out, export dialog allows only resample (which is a shortcoming IMHO – probably because AP had trouble with dpi change without resample feature and feature was later added to Resize Document but not to export dialog...) -
No it should not. You can try clearing palette/window preferences by pressing ctrl key when starting the app. It may restore some behaviour. Affinity separated mode is a mess and it habitually loses palettes and tool widgets and has to be restored time to time. Also, opening a document window usually makes it too small and wrong place.

Preserving 35mm Negatives
Fixx replied to Michael O’Grady's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Usually a dedicated film scanner can do better than a flatbed. It has better resolution and density range (Dmax) (though negatives should be lower contrast than slides). You might find a used one cheap as demand is lessening all the time for them. It is also possible to use a camera attachment to photograph negs, which should be quick, but turning them to positives is not so easy. Scanners have special software to make the conversion. -
Creating complex composit images
Fixx replied to Hradcany's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
It is about the same procedure. Note that you have to rasterize imported layer to be able to remove extra area. I would also use difference transfer mode to set layer exactly to right place (layer turns black when pixels match). Arrowhead is available only with Context Toolbar as AP does not have Stroke panel (I might do labeling with layout app but that is personal taste, merits and drawbacks...). -
Sep preview should be checked with PDF output as export to PDF process can itself change plates content, especially in Affinity.
