  1. BUG source identified.

I thought it strange that this works for others and not me. I have done more testing today with firewalls and other ideas but they made no difference. I tested doing the same SVG file export to the same shared folder using CorelDraw 2019 and that worked fine. I have found out what the issue is and how to overcome the problem for Affinity Designer users. The problem for me is this has a major impact on my workflow.

To explain, I need to do this to export my SVG design files from one PC to another which is running Trotec Ruby laser engraver software. Files that appear in a specific folder are automatically imported into the Ruby software for engraving. The problem seems to be that Affinity Designer exhibits the original problem because of the filename used. The folder name in my case is dictated by the Trotec Ruby software and is an email address (e.g. "myname@domain.com".) This is what causes the Affinity Designer error. If I change to a normal folder name (e.g. TEST-FOLDER) then Affinity Designer saves the SVG file in that folder on the other machine without issue.

So this is a "bug" that Affinity can fix and I would really appreciate it if they could fix it for me.

I shall also pass this info on to Trotec support.

    Thanks in advance

  2. Hi,

I think there is a common bug in both Designer and Photo (PC versions only - the Mac version of Designer works as expected without error). You can't Export a file (of any file type) to a network-shared folder. You get the error message "An error occurred while exporting to \\PC-NAME\folder-name\filename  The output folder could not be created"

I can Save As and save the .afdesign or .afphoto file to the same shared network folder, so it is not a Windows permission problem.

Please can you confirm that you can reproduce this bug and give me an idea of when it can be fixed?

    Thanks in advance

I for one would definitely NOT want this as a default behavior.

My suggestion to Serif is that they either make Export Presets also able to store a default option for the chosen Area.

An alternative solution proposed is to just make the Area selection "sticky" so that it remains on the last used option.

Would either of these options cause you a problem?

Not as default, but to appear only if you have a selection, otherwise "whole document" if nothing selected.

  5. I am just migrating from CoralDraw to Affinity Designer for my laser engraving business and have determined the best method to send the vector graphics to my Trotec laser Ruby control software is by exporting the design as an SVG file.

For my workflow 99 times out of 100 I only want to Export the "Selection Only" - and I might easily have to change this setting 50 times in one morning.

I have made myself a Preset which stores many default options which is great, but for some reason it does not store the chosen Area.

I have researched this site for a solution:

and this was close. As you can see there are others with similar needs.

Another solution proposed was to just make the Area selection "sticky" so that it remains on the last used option.

Please could I ask the Affinity Designer team to create a solution for this simple improvement request before I pull the rest of the hair out!

    Thanks in advance

    +1.

I agree that "Selection Only" should be default and other options in dropdown menu. So many times I have exported something quickly only to find out later it exported whole document.

Upd. Although, actually no, after "Copy as SVG" properly working, it's simple Cmd-C. Maybe Context menu with "Copy as SVG, Copy as PNG etc." will be quicker and better.

In my workflow I need to save the SVG file in a specific folder. The Trotec app automatically monitors the folder and imports the SVG. I have tried normal Copy / Paste between the apps which does not work. How do you "Copy as SVG"?

Can you not use the Preset and choose that in the Export Persona? Select the layer you want to export and make a Slice out of it in the Layers pane in the Export panel. You may have to make a group if it is many layers in the Designer persona first.

Thanks for the suggestion - I have now played around with Export Persona but this adds too much to my workflow to make it worthwhile for me.

  8. I would also like to find a resolution to this same problem.

Am I missing something? If not how do I best request this enhancment in Affinity Designer?

    Thanks in advance
