Thank you John, that is the problem for some reason the close icon is no longer showing up in the left hand corner

that is the problem that cancel button for some reason is no longer in the upper left

Go to menu File > Close or press command+W on macOS or CTRL+W on Windows or click the X icon in the respective document tab.

I have no other files open. When I press control W, I get the message "the current file is being developed, please complete or cancel before closing the document. I used to have a tab right in the upper left hand corner to cancel. That tab is no longer there. How do I now cancel to get out?

It used to be so easy to exit a document. What has changed just trying to exit out of a photo I have not started editing.
How do i do that
trying simply to close out a document
