  1. I am testing the possibility to do comic book lettering in Publisher Beta. There is couple of methods how to create balloons and one of them is to combine 2 shapes (ellipse and tail) into 1 shape or rather create the non-destructive compound shape for future modifications. It works perfectly in Designer but I cannot find how to combine shapes (destructively or non-destructively) in Publisher. Are those functionalities dedicated to Designer only? I assume when the commercial version of Publisher is out and all three apps in suite are communicating it won't be a problem.
  2. I am quite missing Assets in Affinity Photo. It would be very useful in comic book lettering when I don't have accurate font. Here is the example where I created whole alphabet in Affinity Designer (I had no time to create it as font), then I built the text in some of dialogue balloons letter by letter using Assets and then copied it to Photo which I used to adjust and do little retouching of the original artwork. Question: Is there a plan to implement Assets to Photo? And similar.... to implement Macro to Designer?
  3. For me it is simple: I paid for version AD 1.4 (if my memory serves me well) so any 1.x version / update should be for free as it was said. I am willing to pay for the upgrade 2.0 and get 2.x updates for free, if this upgrade is so significant that I will make the decision to switch to version 2.0 (I will probably buy it anyway just to support Serif :-)) But the subscription model? Well this would lead me to go back to other company’s products...
  4. Well, theoretically yes, but I use Canvas X in my regular full-time job in automotive industry, not for comic book lettering (that is just my part time job) so it could potentially legal issue.
  5. Hi MEB. Thanks for feedback. It could be great to have opportunity to break text to curves. As typeface designer I usually have the same font or very similar font in my portfolio (talking about comic book lettering fonts) so I am able to use it. Otherwise I will have to ask for the font my client which is not always possible to get it. OR retype the text and do all lettering again.
  6. Hello. Is there an option in Photo and/or Designer to convert text to curves during opening of PDF file instead of finding substitute font? I have this kind of option in Canvas X but I cannot find similar feature in Affinity... maybe I am just blind...
  7. There are couple of pages about the cost... *sigh*... S**t up and take my money! Btw, is there any chance to get some new sneak peek video? Or "leaked" or "stolen" screenshots of Publisher?
  8. Well, they should work on Publisher beta but when you said WWDC... hm, Designer for iPad?
  9. I found some old requests to add Macros to Affinity Designer, here, here and here, just starting new topic to make those requests live. I believe that Macros in AD will be appreciated by many users. Any comments from development team?
  10. Thanks. It's 34 inches LG (3440x1440) I haven't tried to design color fonts yet, I am not sure if I would find appplication in my work so it could be "waste of time" for me.
  11. I made T-shirt in Affinity Designer for upcoming comic con in Prague - "Crwecon". Inspiration: Arnal by Kája Saudek & Shepard Fairley's poster.
  12. Another time lapse video from my lettering work for Nanits Universe.
  13. S**t! I would have never expected that Windows version will have something more Mac version
  14. Waw, I didn't even think to use separated mode because it reminded me Gimp (which I hate :)) There is one problem when I switch from AD to script to copy text to clipboard. When I am in script only the main AD window is visible, the other panels are hidden which looks little bit weird. But it delivers the layout I want so let's give it a chance. Thanks.
  15. Is it possible to dock studio panels in 2 columns on one side? I found the options to have studio panels on the left and right at the same time but I would prefer to have panels in two (or even three) columns on one side. I am currently doing lettering of the comic saga Nanits Chronicles in Affinity Designer and my "standard" working layout is to have script and references on the left side (25% of the 21:9 34' screen) and Designer on the right (75%). The artwork should be in the centre, so I have one long Layer panel + other panels on the right (see attached screenshot). The Layer panel is not docked, is actually floating over the workspace. Is there any chance to dock the two panel columns next to each other?
  16. Obviously. The stroke thickness should be chosen carefully. If 3pt stroke is applied to very small text then it becomes unreadable and should be adjusted (or not used at all). I also prefer to use real bold/italics not the faux ones. Actually I am a typeface designer and I can create my own fonts if needed but sometimes it could be a waste of time to generate other versions from regular especially if I need bold / italics just in couple words.
  17. Just in case these versions are not included in the font family Btw, I know what is the difference between real italics vs. obligues vs. automatically slanted...
  18. Hi guys. I need an advice. I know there is no such a thing like "Faux Italics" or "Faux Bold" in Affinity products. I tried to find the way how to push Photo to do that... and there is way. ITALICS: In Character - Positioning and Transform there is an option Shear to slant selected text = set an angle. BOLD: Add the stroke to selected text Fine, it works, I could do it manually so let's make some macros and set couple of possible options which I can use in the future. I was able to record the macros for both, even for combo "faux bolditalic". It's not a rocket science, macros are really simple 1 or 2 steps. But it might helps you, guys... or inspire you to play with macros and set some other interesting text styles And my question is: Is there any other, more elegant way how to do this kind of trick? Edit: I uploaded macros for you FauxBoldItalics.afmacros
  19. Well, I am not an expert and I've never have a chance to test Wacom Cintiq so I cannot compare it with my XP-Pen Artist 15.6. But this tablet works quite well with Affinity Photo and Designer. I haven't got any errors, the apps "are talking" with pen pretty good. Only problem I have is that express key for Undo doesn't work in AP or AD for whatever reason. But Brush and Eraser tool can be switched with express keys so for me it's OK. Here is short speed video showing my poor drawing skills in AD using XP-Pen tablet
  20. Thanks, Hokusai. I know Jim Cambell's site and yes, there is a lot of good stuff
  21. Typeface design in Affinity Photo and Glyphs using tablet XP-Pen Artist 15.6
  22. I am working on re-lettering of crazy psychedelic underground comix "Incantations Junkies" by Pierre Gilhodes. Instead of creating font based on the original handwriting I decided to trace several versions of each letter and then build the English translated text manually letter by letter using Assets. I have to admit it is very time consuming technique how to letter bloody 20 pages but it keeps the organic look of text still matching with original artwork. Yeah, maybe I am crazy as well
  23. Hello. Is there an opportunity to change size / height of the items in the Assets panel in the grid mode? I found the option "Show As List" but no option to resize the grid other than to change width of the panel. It could be great to have few options for Assets size (e.g. small, medium, large, extra large) in the future release. Thanks. P.S. Sorry if it is already somewhere as the future request, I was not able to find it.
  24. I just realised that using ⌥ is working also for reorganising assets when they are already in the Assets panel.
