As has previously been discussed in other parts of the thread, a disclaimer of what may not work (some brushes in this case) should not be a difficult thing to have posted. It is that gray area of them not claiming everything is perfect and ready to go, but wording it so that things are unclear. Again though, this point is dead as the purpose of this thread was to figure out how to make brushes work (which an acceptable solution was reached on and settings were added to the original post for those who may come across the same issue and need a starting point). There were divergent tangents, but even those were hashed out and agreements were come to and it was also dropped. I can appreciate that if one stopped reading at that comment they may have missed the rest hence my explaining so here. As to the programs not being in the same class, that is obvious to anyone who has looked at prices and been around any amount of time. No one has really debated as to if they are equal as we have already discussed Photoshop's head start over everyone else, hence some of the issues that we face here in this program and others like it. Perhaps one day people will adopt programs like this and we won't have such issues. Time will tell. I will be bowing out for the evening so I hope everyone has a pleasant evening/ morning or whatnot depending on location.

Thank you for the thorough reply as well as brushes to try out which may help with the holes I'm getting with the ones that came with the set. I will check out/ try the brushes later today as now the family is waking up and my hands are about to be full. Ha ha. I will also try and set the spacing to a slightly larger amount for the ones that I have to see if that helps them to fill in even better than at present. I didn't understand that to be how that setting worked (I thought it meant how close the dots were to each other, not the tip/ ink ratio). Thank you for that clarification as well. Again, thank you very much for the reply.

Of course development and research takes time, especially from scratch. That is why a simple disclaimer can be a fitting solution until they get everything worked out on the back end. As for other programs taking over where Photoshop has stood at the top for a while, well it takes time (as was implied by the mention of change in the future you made). I am okay with waiting and for things to not work so long as I know they don't or will need some tweaking. Those types of things at least let people be informed and give them the chance to make a decision with all knowledge. At this point though we are beating a dead horse. I understand that things take time and they couldn't make it "all" work by release (which is why all programs have new versions) and I feel you understand my side of things in that a disclaimer would have been nice. I agree though, their apps are promising and I have the whole suite. It's not that I don't like the company or the program in question here and I apologize if that was how it came across.

Perhaps my phrasing was unclear. Affinity should simply have an addendum or something on their site with an asterisk beside the .abr support. "All brushes may not perform as in Photoshop due to proprietary permissions of Adobe that we do not have access to. The forums however are a great source of help for those that don't." But again, my issue was that it was implied that all would work as intended. Implications are of course not express claims though. A simple solution would be a notation on their site to give people a heads up so to speak that they may need to make changes or have some that just don't function.

Per Affinity's site, they state they have .abr brush support (see screenshot) which implies that they work [as intended]. Though yes, as I said in a previous comment, "you can import brushes into the program, but maybe not use them" and their way out of 'false advertising' is exactly that. It is a shady marketing ploy, but a common one all the same. But lest you worry about the original purpose of this post, we did manage to get the brushes to work close enough to right that the above is now a moot point. I even edited my initial post to include screenshots for those that come across this same issue themselves and need at least a jumping off point. Have a great day.

Yes, that is something that has been discovered and should be made clear on Affinity's site. But I know that will cause issues for their marketing side of things. That said, Iconoclast did go through and give me some help with ways to get them to work and I've gotten them to be mostly acceptable for the time being. I will post my settings for the brush in question (that works for most of the rest). I do appreciate your initial post as that helped remind me to post more information for getting the most help.

Okay, after making the changes that you mentioned and explained, I can get most of them workable (not all, but that's a different problem). The static ones work perfectly well as shown in the new screenshot. It appears to just be the ones that are dynamic and change based on direction and the like. I will call this a win for now as I need coffee. If you (or anyone else) comes up with something to try and improve the results further, that would be a great help. (Wet edges help too I just saw.) Thank you for the help with this and for dealing with my frustrations.

I appreciate your help and I know I've come across as frustrated, but it's not at you. I prefer to buy things that work. I already have enough projects that I work on and tinker with and I'd hoped that this would be something fun to do, not a new headache. It was my original reason for purchasing the program in the first place given that I'll sometimes take months away from a program when I don't have time. Again, the false advertising on Affinity's end is seemingly the issue and I'm outside of my 14 days so moving on from that one. I've tried the Open CL and turning the Mode to "None" under the texture, but I can't reduce the scale to less than the 10% so it seems that neither of those are hanging out at the root. My last option may be to delete it and see if I can make it work, but in my head the texture I suspect is what makes the brush what it's supposed to be.

The exact problem is that the two lines in Photo are not solid, that they are dashed (and in the case of other brushes, there is nothing displayed at all). If you watch the manufacturer's video again, you'll see him using the brush in question to create a coastline and those lines are solid. Later, he creates an ocean texture (in my screenshots that were attached to comments, they are the first two with a size of 50) and those brushes don't show a preview nor do they work at all on the canvas. The same goes for the rivers (20 & 35 that look very dotted in the same screenshots) which he adds later still and are crisp and clean lines. I understand that the programs are different in function, but at the core they are very similar. The manufacturer also says that brushes work with the program and this seems to be more of a "you can import brushes into the program, but maybe not use them" which feels dishonest to put it kindly.
-
I have, but as of yet no reply as to how to proceed. They aren't familiar with the program and said I could give it a try, but since the giving it a try I've heard nothing back from them yet. That could be because it was a little later when I was using them and they may have decided to be done for the day.

That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure. As for the creation of a brush, I'd prefer to use what I have purchased at this point and make it work. The creator did a good job in making the various brushes, but I feel there is something on Affinity's end that is causing some of the brushes to not display correctly (you can see in the screenshots that some of the brushes don't even have a preview for what they are, or are so broken as to be unusable). The creator has produced a brush that follows the stroke of the mouse or pen so that it is always facing out regardless of the direction.

Those are interesting, and I assume that you mean this would work regardless of the brush being used, so that could be a way for me to make some customs on my end when I get this matter sorted out. As to this one, unless I'm missing something, there don't seem to be any sub brushes set up for this brush so I wouldn't think that's the cause, though I could be missing something too so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I want the two lines with a gap. I would like to be able to have it form a border (two strokes, one movement). Deleting the texture is an interesting way of going about it. It won't be my first option (I have to figure out how to duplicate just a specific brush) and then go from there. This also won't be the only brush I have to do it with as some aren't even showing up which could be as you suggest an issue with the texture.
