We have now added a spiral tool which is available from the shape tools flyout. This is something we have had many requests for, but also varying requests as to the type of result wanted. For that reason we have tried to make this as flexible as possible, both offering different types of spiral and variables to adjust.
When you create a spiral you will see from the context toolbar the different options available. Here are some examples of what you can create with the tool:
Spiral Type: Linear
Spiral Type: Decaying
Spiral Type: Semi-Circular
This type replicates the way many people have been creating a spiral in Affinity - effectively by joining decreasing semi circular arcs together. With this type we also offer a counter Semi-circular option which returns the spiral back on itself:
Another useful feature would be to turn any object into a predefined symbol. How this can be useful:
1. Create your symbol
2. Position simple shapes like circles where you want your symbol to be.
3. Turn the circles into the symbol.
This could help with snapping and positioning, especially if the symbol is very complex and snaps all over the place. We could have options about what to transfer from the shape to the symbol: Position only (center point, the symbol would be normal 100% size), scale (stretch the symbol to fit inside the shape's bounding box), fit, etc.
This workflow has been very useful for me in blender (yes, it's a 3D software, but the method is the same)
Same. Add the basic features the community has been asking for since 2019, then I'll consider re-buying your software, Serif.
Honestly, I'm kinda happy that they're making some progress with releasing V2, but it does not meet expectations for a new release. It's definitely better than the radio silence we had for months (years?) though. But still, what I think Serif needs is to be more transparent with their community. Respond to posts more, let us know what features are in the works, and explain why some aren't and when they will be.
I think there should be some kind of "Patreon-like" monthly subscription where users that want to can fund the development of Affinity software, and get some perks for it - like the ability to vote on features. This would solve 2 problems - insufficient funding, because of their single-purchase model, and the community feeling left out of the development process. I think it would be pretty good for everyone all around.
Windows 10 is probably the last Microsoft OS I will install. The adware and spyware in 11+ is too much for me.
Counting software I use, Affinity (and one other piece of software) are the only remaining holdouts without native Linux versions. How the tides have changed!
+1 for official Linux support.
Hello Everyone/admins/staffs.
i was wondering about this precise thing: is there a way to simplify path or have kind of what the smooth tool on Ai does ?
i mean, a design is always better when we have less node used for the drawing.
as i said, maybe it's there and i just don't see it or maybe there is another way to do it with other tools or functions and here too i may not be aware of it.
Your lights and inputs will be of great help here.
Thanks
Hi!
My name is Ronald van Wijnen and I made my own implementation of the Kubelka-Munk Theory.
This is released under the MIT license and is free to be used by anyone.

If you find this interesting let me know
So basically they refuse to add this simple, essential feature to Designer in hopes that people will buy an entire new program just for that feature, and even then, the workflow sucks ass, because you gotta open an entirely different program each time you want to enable hyphenation for a new textbox. When they already have the code in place for hyphenation to work in Designer after being enabled in Publisher. Am I the only one that sees how insane that sounds? You literally need to prove you own another one of their programs to use a basic feature in the first program.
This kind of decisions are what steered me away from Adobe, because they ruined Illustrator AND set a subscription fee ontop of it. Pure corporate greed. Don't become Adobe, please.
And here's a heads up for you, Serif. No one will buy Publisher just because of that one feature. You have equal chances of putting people off your entire software suite as you are to make an additional software sale. Instead, try to make Publisher its own thing instead of "Designer with Hyphenation included, but not so designer-y". I'll give you an example - you already have pixel persona in Designer. So why would anyone buy Photo? Because it is its own thing, giving people raster options in depth. What you did with hyphenation would be like taking the brush tool away from the pixel persona in Designer. Would it make more people buy Photo? Probably not. Would it irritate the heck out of people? Surely.
Your approach will likely lead to more and more people pirating Publisher and not feeling bad about it because of your frankly stupid practices. Get your sh*t together please.
We only use that version of .NET for the installer itself. The actual app uses .NET 4.7.2. You could extract the internal MSI from the outer installer exe by using "app_name.exe /extract" - though you'd still need .NET 3.5 to do that (you could run Windows in a VM first to extract the MSI).
Information
I tried to run Affinity previously, but only got to the point of "VK_CHILD_WINDOW_RENDERING" not being implemented and after not using Affinity Photo for a long time to stay with Linux I got the following message on Discord:
So I had to try it out and what can I say? It works flawlessly!
Installation
Download Affinity 1.6.5 from: "https://store.serif.com/de/update/windows/photo/1/"
The following commands are required to install and use Affinity Photo (Run EVERYTHING in the same terminal instance).
Open a terminal in the same folder, you downloaded Affinity into!
# Download and extract the correct wine version
curl -L https://lutris.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/runners/wine/wine-lutris-vkchildwindow-4.12.1-x86_64.tar.xz > wine-lutris-vkchildwindow-4.12.1-x86_64.tar.xz
tar xf wine-lutris-vkchildwindow-4.12.1-x86_64.tar.xz
# Set the path to wine for winetricks to work correctly
export WINE="$PWD/lutris-vkchildwindow-4.12.1-x86_64/bin/wine"
# Remove the old wine prefix
rm -rf ~/.wine
alias wine=$WINE
wine wineboot -i
When this window opens, click on "Cancel"
# Downloading the newest version of winetricks
curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks > winetricks
chmod +x winetricks
Now that everything is downloaded, and a new prefix was created, you have to install some dependencies.
Follow the instructions in the setups and click on "Reboot Now". You can ignore warnings by the setups.
# To prevent errors from mono
./winetricks remove_mono -q
# For the installer
./winetricks dotnet35sp1 -q
# For the main application
./winetricks dotnet472 -q
# Set windows to 8.1, since aero is not found if set to win7
./winetricks win81 -q
Run the installer with: (Deselect desktop shortcut)
wine affinity-photo-1.6.5.135.exe
Install DXVK to make Affinity Photo work
git clone https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk
./dxvk/setup_dxvk.sh install
Affinity should now be installed under "~/.wine"
Hi there!
I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list:
They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts.
They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake.
No attribution required.
In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included).
Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria).
[*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality.
Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique.
[UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of.
[UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts.
[UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link.
[UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration.

Noto Serif Display - Google Fonts
Hi all,
Yesterday marked the end of our ‘40% off V2’ launch offer. With that offer ending I wanted to let you know about a couple of things:
Ongoing upgrade price for the Universal Licence
As I mentioned in my previous announcement (here), offering a specific upgrade price for V1 customers had many complications and is why we decided to run a launch offer in the way we did. However, we listened to the feedback we had around that, and have used this time to implement a method to offer an upgrade price long-term — allowing customers who have not upgraded yet an opportunity to still do so at a better price than a new customer.
All the issues I previously referenced around App Store conflict still exist, so the upgrade offer:
Is only available for purchases of the Universal Licence (offering upgrade pricing on individual apps just is not possible without conflicting with App Store guidelines as each individual app has their own App Store listing)
Is only available for purchases made directly from our website (we cannot offer this upgrade discount for people purchasing via an App Store)
The ongoing upgrade offer is 25% off the Universal Licence, and also includes a free content bundle (the Creative Collection) worth over £200. To claim this discount, we will validate you own V1 based on whether you previously purchased V1 from us directly, or have registered a V1 App Store purchase to your account. This offer is available from our new upgrade page.
Creative Collection content bundle now available to anyone who has already upgraded from V1 to V2 during the launch offer period
If you already upgraded to V2 during the launch offer period, we also wanted to make sure you could retrospectively claim this new free content bundle.
We have worked hard to make this a valuable gift, and have tried to cover various different use cases of our apps. The bundle includes some high-quality fonts, brushes, LUTs, icon assets and resources and, as mentioned above, is worth over £200. So, if you have already purchased V2 and you previously owned V1, you can claim this content for free as a special thank you for your support (in addition to the 40% discount you would have already received on your V2 purchase during the launch offer).
To claim the Creative Collection, please visit our upgrade page and scroll down towards the bottom where there is a ‘CLAIM NOW’ link under ‘Already upgraded from V1 to V2? You can get the Creative Collection for free below’.
After following the link, you’ll be taken through the validation step of checking your account as being someone who owned V1 and has purchased V2. The way we confirm this is by seeing a V1 purchase tied to your account, whether you purchased it directly from us or you registered an App Store purchase to your Affinity account.
Claim your free content now
We understand there will be some of you who did purchase V1 from an App Store but may not have ever registered it to your account (and as you probably don’t have V1 installed anymore, no longer have the ability to register it). In that case we will need to try to validate that manually with you. So, please first try getting the Creative Collection using the link above and if that fails, drop us an email with your Affinity ID to affinity@serif.com (subject: “Free Content”) and we will do our best to help. If it’s possible for you to dig out your original App Store receipt for your V1 purchase, it will speed up the process if you include that in your email to us.
Other than that, thanks again for all your continued support. We hope you enjoy your gift!
Thanks,
Ash
With the roll out of Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher for Windows version 2.0.4, Serif are making available Unsandboxed installers (also known here as MSI/EXE installers). These installers will be made for all future V2 release builds going forward and will autoupdate from within the application (checking for updates on each run, like the sandboxed version does)
Serif do not recommend or support mixtures of MSIX and MSI on the same computer. You should only use either all sandboxed or all unsandboxed, particularly if you have more than one Affinity V2 application installed.
You can now download (and install) Windows unsandboxed MSI/EXE installer files (as well as Windows sandboxed MSIX installer files) from these store pages.
1. From the V2 Universal Download page
Click on the words "Looking for Windows MSI installers?"
2. Individual V2 application Download pages, found here
Affinity Designer 2
Affinity Photo 2
Affinity Publisher 2
Click on "Also available EXE (size MB)"
3. LICENCES AND DOWNLOADS pages in your account
Click on the words "Looking for Windows MSI installers?"
Okay of all the places, I found a perfectly-working Voronoi Diagram Generator that was built into Inkscape. Open source software never ceases to amaze me.
This is exactly the result I was looking for. Thanks for all the input everyone!
Using the pressure graph for drawings is like steering a car with a calculator. A width tool is so much more intuitive, fast, precise and satisfying to work with.
Reading this thread, it appears that vector patterns still aren’t supported in Designer V2. Disappointing!
As an Illustrator user since version 1.0 – yes! I'm that old – and having worked as a designer at Aldus- the original owners of FreeHand – there are some basic concepts of vector drawing apps that I've grown up with. Being able to create and apply patterns within a document being one of those things.
I like to keep my designs live, and contain all the elements within one document. Having to export patterns as a PNG and then bring them back as a fill, is really clunky. I so wanted to fall in love with the new versions of these Affinity products, especially as the Shape Builder tool finally made an appearance in Designer. However it already feels like they're going to sit on my digital shelf for the next few years gathering dust.
Pros:
MSI had an installation success rate of ~85% (and we have many requests to our tech support team for v1 install failures). MSIX promises a 99.9% success rate.
MSI requires admin privileges to install. MSIX installs per-user, but files are deduplicated so that disk space isn't wasted.
MSI apps are not sandboxed from other applications, meaning other applications can break those apps (we have seen this with several third-party apps in the past). MSIX apps are sandboxed to prevent this.
MSI updates require a manual download of the full ~550mb installer which must be manually installed. MSIX can perform in-app delta updates which are smaller and faster.
MSI updates can only be performed one at a time. MSIX can update all three apps simultaneously.
MSI cannot guarantee that an uninstall will leave your machine in the exact state prior to install. MSIX installs are segregated and don't rely on the registry or special filesystem locations meaning an uninstall always leaves you in a clean state. Installation and app data paths are cleaned on uninstall.
MSI apps cannot integrate with Microsoft Photos app to provide "Edit In..." style features. MSIX can.
MSI does not require a digital signature. MSIX does (this means any MSIX that appears to be from Serif, will be guaranteed to be from us and only us).
Cons:
MSI can allow the user to change the installation directory. MSIX can move installed apps to different drives, but it cannot choose a specific directory (due to the sandbox). See below:
MSI can allow an option to install a desktop shortcut. MSIX doesn't provide this as an option, but you can pin the apps to either the Start Menu or the Taskbar. There is also the secret Shell:AppsFolder location in Explorer that allows you to right-click or drag the icon to your Desktop for a shortcut as a workaround if you need it.
MSI has easy discovery of undocumented app locations for launching from a third-party. MSIX hides the install location due to the sandbox, but we use App Execution Alias to enable this scenario. You can find the aliases in the following location:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityDesigner2.exe
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityPhoto2.exe
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityPublisher2.exe
Remembering to replace username with your Windows username. Also, those paths are already in your %PATH% variable so you can often launch them without even specifying the full path, e.g. just AffinityPhoto2.exe. There are bugs in some third-party applications with the App Execution Alias , and the next post includes aflaunch.exe as a work around if you need that instead.
We clearly originally did not plan to distribute the MSI generically so there is quite a lot of testing & fixing required. We are likely to release MSI installers when we do the first patch, so hopefully before Christmas. At the moment some functionality like StudioLink and Edit in are non functional. Sorry this is far from straightforward given the way the applications share downloaded content and created assets/brushes.
We need to address these and anything else we find before MSI installers are made available more generally, or we will just be introducing more problems than it resolves.

Hi All,
Well, it’s been a pretty crazy week since the launch of V2!
This has been a real labour of love for us over the last year or so, and I can’t even begin to describe how hard the development team have worked on it. Not only getting the V2 apps launched, but also of course finally bringing Publisher to iPad.
With this being our first paid-for upgrade there has understandably been a lot of feedback / questions around future updates and our pricing policies. I thought it was worth addressing / clarifying our position on some of these personally...
Updates to V2 moving forward
Buying V2 not only gets you all the new features you have seen, but we have various updates planned – including many more new features and improvements – which you will get for free. This will continue until such a time that V3 is released. We’re not sure exactly when V3 will be, but I can confirm we are not going to move to anything as regular as an annual upgrade cycle as has been speculated.
It’s worth saying too that V2 does include many under-the-hood changes to our underlying technology, and we have also been investing in several new areas of research recently. Some of these haven’t manifested themselves into new features yet, but overall V2 does give us a better platform to develop on moving forward and I’m sure you will be pleased with the updates V2 will receive.
Updates to V1 moving forward
While we did say on the FAQ that V1 would no longer receive any updates, I want to clarify that was about new feature updates. We will be updating V1 to fix any critical problems caused by operating system updates in the future. So if the next version of macOS breaks V1 we will endeavour to fix it. There will be a point in time when continuing to maintain V1 in this way will not be tenable, but certainly for the foreseeable future we will continue to patch. In fact, we have an update to V1 queued up for release very shortly with some fixes for Ventura and issues caused by a recent Windows security / quality update.
We will update our FAQ shortly to make that clearer for everyone.
Offer period
In case you didn’t see, I’m pleased to confirm we have decided to run this initial launch offer until 14th December to give everyone the best chance possible to get it if they wish / have a decent amount of time to trial it.
Upgrade pricing
It’s been really hard to see some of the comments about us not looking after our existing customers – we’re pretty devasted that anyone feels like that to be honest. But the fact is we felt our hands were tied somewhat with being able to offer upgrade pricing in a fair way. The main reason for this was App Store customers (which make up around 35% of our userbase). The problems with that are two-fold: firstly, we didn’t have a way from within V1 to validate an App Store purchase receipt to reliably ensure customers who were entitled to an upgrade could get one; and secondly, we could not find a good way for people to get that discount via the App Store. Us pushing upgrade customers to go exclusively via our own site (including customers who were previously acquired via the app stores) may also have put us in violation of App Store Ts & Cs which we were obviously concerned about.
I’m not saying that these issues were completely insurmountable, but any solutions we came up with would be messy, and most importantly could have resulted in some bona fide V1 customers struggling to get validated and claim their discount. We certainly don’t have the support resource here if we ended up needing to manually validate tens of thousands of receipts for example.
The only option we felt was safe to move forward with was a general launch offer, which would guarantee that every V1 customer could get the discount, whether they purchased directly through us or the App Stores. We knew a side effect of that would mean some new customers would end up receiving that same discount – but we felt that was a better option than V1 customers missing out. It’s also worth saying that while there has been some good press about V2, all our main marketing has been via email and through social media to our followers. In other words, we felt ok about it because we knew the vast majority of people who would find out about it or take advantage of the offer would be existing customers. I would be surprised if over the offer period customers upgrading from V1 didn’t make up more than 90% of our sales.
Overall I do believe us giving a 40% discount, along with the addition of the new Universal Licence of course, is offering fantastic value for money for those who want to upgrade.
However, taking on board some of the feedback there is something extra we can do – we will offer a new free bundle of content exclusively for V1 customers upgrading to V2 as an extra thank you for your support. I’ve seen this suggested by a number of customers and it’s a great idea as it does remove the App Store conflict entirely.
We’ll need a little time to put something together, but all customers who previously registered or purchased V1 and have since upgraded to V2 will receive a voucher code for this via email as soon as we can.
A comment on no subscription
I do want to say that some of the points above are exactly the reason why software companies move to subscription. Whatever you do with upgrade pricing, you still have the issue of customers who bought the previous version 3 months ago vs. those who have had it 2+ years. Offering perpetual licences also gives the additional overhead of needing to maintain the previous version longer than you would if everyone was on subscription / generally always on the latest version.
We are a small team so some of these complications are not ideal — all we really want to do is focus on developing our latest codebase, push out regular updates and continue with our mission to make great creative software accessible to everyone.
But it does need to be funded somehow. We know you love our no-subscription model, but there also needs to be a level of appreciation that the alternative is having paid-for upgrades from time to time. That unfortunately comes with its own problems.
All of that said, I have to say we have been blown away with the response to V2 - around 3 times as many people have upgraded in the last week than we expected - and we really can't thank you enough for the support you have shown. More than anything the success of this upgrade puts us in a great place to continue investing heavily in development which is ultimately what it's all about, and we’re super excited to crack on with some great updates coming next year!
All the best,
Ash
Hi all. Thanks for your patience over the weekend when our offices were closed.
We've had a meeting this morning and decided to ALSO offer MSI installers to those people who would like them. I can't tell you when this will happen, as there is engineering work that will be required to allow this to happen, but we hope it won't be long.
Thanks for your feedback!
A quick message to Serif, if you think you can just "wait out the storm", while keeping radio silence, that may be so, but there may be no userbase left after the storm is over.
When there are page-long threads about the same issues everyone is having and everyone is unhappy with your latest choices, I think it's high time you did something about it, or at the very least acknowledge the problem, don't you think?

Well, here I am. Professional 3D modeler and sculptor, using Affinity Photo and Designer for all sorts of stuff - texturing, good old graphic design, sketching, digital painting. Last year I have illustrated children's book using Photo. I could have use Paintstorm Studio or Krita or Corel Painter but I just used to Photo so much that I didnt bothered jumping between apps. I got several friends who are using Affinity - mostly Designer - for their purpose. Once I spoke with rather big name in the industry - Joseph Drust, formerly working in Pixologic, about possibility of writing addon for Affinity Photo that would allow to export many passes from ZBrush in one file to Photo. Sadly it was impossible due to lack of scripting capabilities in Photo (or something like that, I dont remember specifics) but he mentioned that is using Designer and finds it very cool.
I dont expect to convince you - judging by your tone you are determined to demand legal documents, videos, transcripts, official statistics posted on government website etc. proving that somebody is using Affinity in professional setting
But I think we may agree on fact, that just because YOU dont know anybody who is using it means literally NOTHING. I dont know any people that are using Rhino3D. So? That also means nothing. World is bigger then we and our circles. And you are just random person from internet - like many of us. Nobody will try hard to prove something to you. I might tell you how the things are, but you can easily keep believing otherwise. In the world where some people cannot be convinced that Earth is not flat I dont expect to have any success convincing you that you are mistaken. I just want you to know you are. Your disbelief will not affect reality, I will not be forced by it to go back to Adobe. Neither will any of people I know that are indeed using Affinity in their workflow. So you can either believe it or.. not.
-------------------
And yes, the whole windows app thing is really annoying.
I love using Affinity software and unlike many here that are threatening to stop using it or ask refund or some other type of drama - I will keep using it even as an app. But I did lost ability to start Photo from FastStone viewer which was very convenient. So it has impacted my workflow negatively offering nothing in exchange as positive. I hope devs will consider (or whoever is in charge there - certainly not devs ) to go back to good old exe. I would appreciate that very much!
