That's the desired behavior to avoid unwanted changes to master page objects on document pages. Detaching the master will give you further access to the text frame. Maybe you might prefer for in this case not to use a master page text frame at all.

It's the wineglass tool which does the exact same thing and by grouping you can add multiple grad fades

From your example it looks like you are just fading (adding transparency) the picture from one side to the other. If that is what you want to do, just add a mask and add a black/white gradient to the mask. (Or use shades of grey for a subtler effect.)
