Josan reacted to Ash in 2.4 new features and improvements list
    Hi All,
Below is the list of all new feature and improvements which are included in the 2.4 beta (bug fix list is available here).
To learn more about these features please click on the link to go to each feature's dedicated post. To give feedback or report bugs against any of these features please reply to that same post (also check out bug reporting and feedback tips).
Layer States added to Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher DWG and DXF Export added to Affinity Designer Set Selection Box Double click / tap to switch from node to move tool Filename available as variable in Export Persona Ability to lock insertion target Space modifier for Lock Children Space Horizontal / Vertical now considers key object Size / Rotate objects to same 32-bit HDR PNG support added (PNG Third Edition) Additional RAW format support Getting the 2.4 beta
If you have not enrolled into the beta program yet and would like to take part, you can do so here. This will immediately give you access to the latest 2.4 beta builds to try for yourself.
If you are already enrolled in the beta program you have two options:
    1. If you still have the 2.3 beta installed, you can now run up those beta versions and you will be prompted to update them to the 2.3 beta.
    2. If you have uninstalled the 2.3 beta, you will need to go back to Your Account -> Downloads and product keys and find your previous order for the Affinity Beta Software Program, and you can download the 2.4 beta from there.
    Thanks,
    Ash

IDML export is a must-have feature for anyone producing documents in multiple languages. Professional translation service providers use automated tools that work with IDML files. Once I had to redo a brochure in InDesign just because of this.
The solution is to rasterize anything that isn't compatible with InDesign native objects.

Josan reacted to walt.farrell in Adding dictionaries
You can find general instructions for adding dictionaries to Publisher 2 here:
However, while that describes the mechanics of adding them, the Basque dictionaries are not provided there (or in the usual places we look for them).
I have found some dictionaries for Basque that may work: eu-ES.zip
You should be able to unzip that file into the Dictionary folder used by the Affinity applications. To find that folder, open Settings in the application, go to the Tools panel, and at the bottom you'll see this:

Click on Open, and unzip that file into that directory. Do not make any changes to the Settings. Just Open the Dictionaries folder and unzip the file I provided. Then restart Publisher and you should be able mark text as Basque for spell-checking using the Language setting in the Character panel. Automatic hyphenation will not be possible.
You may want to create a Text Style for marking text as Basque more easily.

There are many dictionaries that are not included. Just look at that FAQ.

Preflight is active by default, and will warn of overflow text by default, too.

If Preflight is active and set up correctly, it should give you a warning when you try to export the file when there is overflow text

[Updated Nov 30 2023 - new version for Publisher 2.3 with 120 more pages than the first version]
Learn how to format text and publish books and other long documents with Affinity Publisher 2.3. This free in-depth manual is filled with steps, tips, and recommendations for:
Character and paragraph formatting - added Nov 30 Text styles - added Nov 30 Documents, Pages, Master Pages, Sections, and Baseline Grid Text Frames, Text Flow, and Stories Books and Chapters Cross-References, Table of Contents, and Index Notes - including Footnotes, Sidenotes, and Endnotes Fields - including Page Numbering, Running Headers, and Custom Variables Anchors and Hyperlinks Printing and Exporting Settings This manual does not cover objects and photos so it covers approximately half of the topics.
    Updated version:
    Publisher Manual Nov 29 2023.pdf

    Q&A
Is there a full manual I can purchase? No, this is all there is. Is this really free? Yes, I'm making it available free of charge. It's copyrighted to prevent others from publishing it as their own. Is there an iPad version? No, the steps and screenshots are for the macOS and Windows versions. Is there a version for Designer or Photo? No, but the text features are largely the same so you may find it useful. Why does it use a print layout if it's a PDF? It's a demonstration of how to use the features it describes to create a print book. Original version:

Josan reacted to PaoloT in Tables across multiple pages
That's right. It's not possible, and I fear your workaround can't work. In any case, a table that should extend over multiple pages can't do it. The only possible workaround is to manually break it into multiple tables.
Needless to say, this is not a viable solution in many, if not in most, cases.

Is there any news on potential updates? I bought Publishers in the hope that books spread across multiple files would become available soon. I have not been able to use Publisher at all because, when I try to load the 400 pages with illustrations, Publisher says it's out of resources and crashes.

Any update on this now that it's being released on Monday?
I tend to wait until the dust has not just settled but been swept up, however Ventura has an updated Metal 3 - whatever that means - and it would be good to know the whole story.

    Thanks for your rapid support.
But doing that I lose the origin x=0 on the left page. I want to have both pages with an origin x=0 (like in InDesign)

ID uses the preference setting as shown in @Josan's screen shot. Every script I've seen that needs to obtain Zero per page, sets the document preference to see Zero per page then restores the user's preference when the script is finished.
QXP only uses Zero per page (as far as I recall). I depend on it when creating items during tagged text import.
Viva Designer only uses Zero per page (as far as I recall). I've never mucked around in preferences to see if that is changeable. I do use a script that utilizes positioning based on Zero being per page.

Hm? You seem to misunderstand the use and the technical requirement of facing pages. It is definitely not just to create layouts in shorter or wider width. 😉
How do you know? Though many roads lead to Rome the OP of this thread goes via the ruler for orientation on the landscape while driving the layout. Thus it doesn't make sense to respond "You don't need" or "Why Rome?".
So, if a workflow wants to use the information given by the ruler – as commonly known in other apps – it appears at least confusing up to useless if the values have their own understanding ("I don't see 2 pages") or change their direction in the middle. Imagine you want to position objects on left page like those on the right one. The expected app behaviour would allow to use for both the same ruler value, for instance 20, 100 or 220 – but Affinity insists to think different …:

The negative counting on the left page wouldn't even be helpful to layout a document with an RTL language (e.g. Arabic) on the left page because it is the ruler only which is turned but not e.g. the positions of the object anchors in the transform panel (which then would indeed result in identical values for left and right objects).

Aside from needing to use +XXX in the transform panel for setting an element to precise measurements manually, if/when Serif ever adds scripting, they will need to provide a method for a script to know if an element being placed and/or created is on a L/R side of a spread.
Which I suspect they will do rather than just correct a stupid, not well-thought out origin point for spreads.
Really? Could you get by with such a hack?
