Armelline reacted to Ash in Crop Tool improvements
Apps: Photo
Platforms: Windows, macOS and iPad
A number of improvements have been made to the crop tool based on customer feedback:
Crop to selection. If you have a pixel selection active the crop tool will now initiate to be a min fit around the selection you have. After a crop the current zoom level will be maintained (rather than automatically zooming to fit as previously). From various feedback this was considered preferable behaviour and leaving it to the user to choose if they want to zoom to fit after (cmd-0 or hitting zoom icon in the top toolbar of iPad). The Crop tool now remembers the last setting globally, so if you wish to apply the same ratio crop to a number of images it's much easier. You can now drag anywhere on the bounding box edges to resize the crop, rather than having to drag from a handle. Enter as well as Return will now commit a crop Escape will reset the current crop In unconstrained mode, holding Shift will constrain the current aspect ratio and Cmd (Ctrl on Windows) will resize around the centre When you rotate / use straighten feature in crop tool it will now automatically adjust crop box to fit. Please let us know what you think or if you spot any issues or have any feedback on this new behaviour.

Armelline got a reaction from przemoc in Feature Request: Crop to Selection
Would love to see Crop to Selection (i.e. whatever is surrounded by the marquee tool) added in a future update. Was very disappointed to hear it did not make it into the V2 release. I'm speaking primarily about Photo as that's the one I need it for, but I assume others would get benefit in the other apps too.
Please note this is an entirely separate discussion to the one regarding V1. There's an entirely separate forum for V2 so I'm assuming feedback related to V1 isn't applicable to V2 and thus this thread is needed.

I have not bothered to upgrade to v2 because of this missing feature and this thread. The resistence to the feature by Affinity, the snark and condescension from some of the "pillars" of this community, both make me deeply wary of investing more money in this software. Such a small, simple thing to add. (And I'm sorry I simply won't believe it's hard to add - it just needs to read the topmost, leftmost, bottommost, and rightmost positions of the selection and then move the existing crop boundaries to those positions. If even that is too much work then the code must be absolute spaghetti. And there are many other ways it could be achieved more elegantly, I'm sure.)
They are losing money over this feature. Clearly not enough for them to care, though.

Well +1 from me.
One would think after 5 years they could have figured this out. Considering that I can't find another photo app without a crop to selection feature, I'm surprised they don't support this simple and common workflow. I gave V1 a pass on missing some of the basic tools, but that won't fly with V2 so I won't be purchasing future products from Affinity until they show signs that they can get their act together.

Some of the comments on this forum truly baffle me. The constant and often insulting resistence to perfectly reasonable feature requests is just... weird. Nobody is demanding Serif match all of Photoshop's features or prices. We just want a very, very easily implemented feature prevelant in pretty much *every other* photo editing software. It truly baffles me how there's *any* resistance to adding this feature.
And let's not pretend that Serif don't position Affinity Suite as a direct alternative to Adobe. It's clear that's who they're directly taking aim at with their repeated "No subscription" proclamations.
This comparison is utterly absurd. We're not demanding that GMC produce a product with all the luxuries and precision of a Bently. Though that's a pretty insulting towards Affinity comparison to make in the first place. We're asking, to keep with your anaology, something more akin to that they add the ability for the windows to roll all the way up or down without having to press the button the entire time. Something that nearly all modern cars offer, other than this one.
I won't even get into how condescending your last sentence is.

LOL well I feel bad now for stirring up some $#!+.
I mean, aren't we all saying the same thing though? 🤷♂️ We're all talking about basic features (as others were quick to chime in) -- not a clone featuring 3D and animation capabilities.
Affinity Photo already functions extremely similarly to PS. That (and all the influencers' exposure) convinced me to take a serious look, then take the plunge. But that's beside the point. This crop thing just seems like such an easy win from a dev standpoint. The coordinates are all there with bounding boxes, the info panel, clip canvas, probably other places.
(@Armelline you beat me to that comment as I was about to submit, LOL. I paid for the upgrade because of all the other stuff that I needed.)

Crop to selection is more like windshield wiper timers. Does your economical GMC pickup require you to press the windshield wiper button every single time you want to clear the rain drops? I doubt it. That is a standard feature across almost all cars made in the last 70 years.
The basic Microsoft Paint, .NET Paint, and dozens of other low priced apps have crop to selection, it should be standard on any app claiming to be a photo editor. I can only assume the developers have some kind of harebrained idea that they needed to go to war against that super common workflow. If the Affinity workflow was faster I would say yay Affinity for innovating. Instead it is slower and clunkier and makes me wonder if some rare form of dementia is starting to set in.

Armelline reacted to Metalhead in Pricing?
I wouldn't call it "big features" to get absolut basic functions that should have been included in the 1.7 launch version. I started with InDesign CS2 from 2005 - I don't know a dtp world without "save as package" or templates. Maybe my expectations were too high for Publisher's release und now I'm disappointed to pay again for more basic features like span columns or global layers they are still not present.

Armelline reacted to chakko007 in Pricing?
Well... maybe we shouldn't see that as the benchmark.
The Affinity apps cost 54.99 € originally (with occasional discount prices of 24.99 €), then they bumped the price in Covid times to 64.99 €, and now they cost 84.99 €. Pretty steep... my math says that's a raise of ~57 %.
I surely won't upgrade anytime soon... as a mere hobbyist, I also have to keep my money together.
Edit: Looks like the original price at release was even lower... 49.99 €.

People keep talking about 8 years and 7 years and ignoring that the number of years is pretty much irrelevant. What matters is the number and quality of updates in that time. Which, since I've bought anything from Affinity, at least, has been few and minor. Maybe the pace and substance of updates was better in the early years?
