Hi there,
I'm very new to Affinity designer and this is my first post on the forums. I'm hoping to spend more time here to learn from ya'll 🙂
I am trying to create a design where a stylised set of letters "ex" is cut-out from a black circle background. The "ex" is made up of a group of curves - I haven't merged these curves or joined them. I want the cut-out to be transparent.

A designer friend gave me an AI file with this design and I opened it with Affinity Designer to modify. Should I ask for .EPS files from now on?
I can't seem to cut-out the "ex" from the black circle using the Boolean operations or the erase blending mode. When I do use the subtraction tool it seems to consider the fill of the curves, even though they are set to no-fill 😞
Can I please get some pointers on how Affinity recognises open paths like these and how I should combine shapes together in general and especially when I want to cut them out from backgrounds.
Thanks!
Jay

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the detailed reply - expanding the stroke worked and gave me the result I was after 🙏
