  1. So, I am trying to use a font with a colored back ground and keep the blue in the small areas of the letter. When using the selection tool, When I hit the "Refine" button to clean it up and create a new layer of the letter to be used some where else the whole screen goes blurry and the letter turns blue and the background purplish. Never experienced this before. How do I fix this?

If you can give us a much better idea of what you have and what you want to do with it then we can probably help.
    Otherwise we are simply guessing.

Sorry, I can't share what the work is. Just know its a body of water and I want to try and give it a crystalized look effect. Kinda like a sparkle effect. I would even be happy with the image I shared

My interpretation of crystals, are sparkle-like, dust-like particles. So I would start with spray/spatter brushes. If you find a brush that is similar to the crystals, you will need to really tweak it.

There are particle brushes available online, Corel sells one that's called Particle Brushes. I had the freebie version of it, and it is a good brush plug-in.

I looked at the Affinity store, and didn't see any brushes/overlays that struck me as crystal-like. I haven't looked through the various overlay/assets, like the snow. Could be one of those might be tweaked through blurring, blend modes to get what you're after.

Since this client has the potential of landing you a lot more, then I'm sure you're going to dive into this, with understanding it might require investing additional resources and possibly a lot of time.

You are exactly right in your interpretation. I bought all of frankentoons brush kits hoping to score something. But, no luck. Again, not sure i have the skill or knowledge to pull off tweaking these effects to get the crystalized look I would like. That's why I am hoping I could find like an overlay to layer over the water and give the effect lol

Not sure I'll get that lucky. But you are right, I am investing some time researching and playing around.

    Thanks

  4. I have a client that asked for a design. So I have the design and now she is asking if i could put crystals in the image. I have loads of brushes but cant seem to find the right one to create the illusion of a crystals. The picture has blue water in it. So I was thinking on giving the water the illusion it has a crystalized effect. anyone got a tutorial, suggestion, etc.?

It might be I just don't have the skill to pull it off. But guidance would help. lastly, I was thinking of maybe a translucent layer that I could put over the water to give the effect? I don't know I'm stuck. Kinda frustrated. Need to win this person over. they could bring me alot of new people.

I asked the following a couple of minutes ago:

I’ll let you know if I get a reply!

    Edit: Forty minutes and counting!!

Edit 2: More than three hours now. I think it’s fair to conclude that I’m unlikely to get an answer.

I took a chance and bought it.

1: let me start by saying... wtf, who zip files every file!? Literally almost everything filed was zipped and even when I opened that more zip files. freaking headache.

2: Vector images are trash you can get for free on any clip art site.

3: I'd say 80%, and thats alot, is unusable without photoshop, etc.

4: But, there was a ton of fonts. I did see a bunch of family fonts. but there were literally a lot I never seen before and I currently hold more than I can count of fonts.

5: all in all I guess the $20 was worth the fonts but the rest I cant do anything with unless i get photoshop. **** them! lol

  6. I been seeing alot of graphics bundles, etc. online for sale that I could use alot for my hobby. Unfortunately, most of the time its always photoshop compatible.

I was wondering if anyone on here knows where I can find bundles that are Affinity compatible?

    Example:  https://graphindustry.com/products/the-mega-complete-bundle

Hope I am not breaking any rules?

    Thanks!

I am going to have to assume you are using a Shape and you want a border on it, use a stroke instead of an Effect. Then you can set the Fill colour to transparent.

This will work in all three of the Applications. You would help us help you by saying what application you are using, Designer, Photo or Publisher.

I am using affinity photo, but I can also use designer if its easier?

  8. Could someone help me figure out how to do 2 things? Did a goog search and couldn't find the exact way to perform it.

1: the circle is a shape witht he border down in effects tab. instead of leaving the center a white circle, how can I turn just the white part transparent so I can layer in photos, fonts, etc?

2: I bought a file and the objects are all separated as you can see in the image. how do I weld them together so when I print it out it wont have the little lines in the lettering going through it?

    Thanks!

  9. So I used the selection tool to get this owl out. but when I go into the "refine" tab and put black background on to see the white out line better, I see these flares of colors. I tried using the refine tool to smooth out the flares but it only makes it worse. I have this object selected pretty much perfect around the outer perimeter. Not sure why I am getting this and how the heck do I erase them?

    Anyone?

    Thanks!

  10. So I know how to take basic shapes "circle, square, etc" and weld them together in order to make one shape and fill in with color. using the "geometry tool and ADD.

Now I'm stuck trying to take the shape of a football helmet. by using the "selection tool" and creating that as a shape and duplicating it and putting a bunch of them together in order to weld them together and make one shape. The Geometry/add wont let me do it.

Anyone know to take a football helmet or any object and turn it into a shape so you can duplicate multiples to weld together and create one large shape and fill itin with any color?

    Thanks!

    It depends.

The „Background transparent“ settings only changes how (already existing) transparent parts are shown (white or checkered) but it does not change the image.

    Jpegs normally don’t support transparency.

    PNG does support transparency.

When you opened the PNG version, please use the channels panel, and look at the thumbnail belonging to the alpha channel of the Layer. You can click on the left side of the alpha channel to only show the alpha channel. If it is shown flat white, you need to remove the background yourself. Click on the „reset“ arrow Symbol to get back to normal view. (Channels visibility in help)

    https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/pages/Panels/channelsPanel.html

To remove the background, multiple methods can be used, and the best suited depends on the type of image, and you skills/experience:

    1. Manual selection
    2. Erase white paper (removes white / gray areas). Might remove non-background pixels, too, and generally modify alpha for non-background pixel https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/pages/Filters/filter_eraseWhitePaper.html
    3. Background erase brush https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/pages/Tools/tools_backgroundEraseBrush.html
    4. Procedural texture filters can be used to remove background based on specific RGB values or ranges. In combination with a mask on the PT filter to protect areas the PT filter removes by mistake
    5. More methods are possible, e.g. using blend mode, masks, vector shapes.

Wow, Thank you so much for that tutorial! alot of great lessons here.

Using the channels, I found that it left a white background. So that at least let me know it wasn't going to be easy. I tried a couple of the other options you made available and they worked. but, unfortunately the image I want to keep has white in it as well so it was removing that too. So I took the long hard way and did it manually using the selection brush tool. It took about an hour and a half to complete. but overall I am happy with what I got. Definitely saved this post in my tutorials list.

    Thanks again!

I would suggest that you download our 10 day trial and see if your document opens as expected. The apps have changed quite a bit since 2016 👍

The trial can be downloaded from the bottom of this page here: https://affinity.serif.com/designer/

Thank you, I already own copies of your software. Just trying to figure out if I should lay down the $80 for the site.

Wondering if I will be able to use these mockups by Photific inside Affinity Designer?

Here's the main page, which says that the mockups are Photoshop files, delivered as PDF ...

And this screenshot talks about "3D design mapping" and "proprietary layer processing" ...

Hoping someone can advise me, from looking at those two links.

    Many thanks!

Did this ever get figured out? Looking to use the site, if I can work with in Affinity.

  14. This is not placing an image inside a shape.

I basically have a picture of a thick book on a table. I want to take a picture of my friends book cover and place it on top of the other book cover perfectly to fit.

1: how do I get her book cover to merge with the book on the table and...

2: her book cover picture is basically a rectangle shape image. how do I shape it to fit perfectly for it to cover the cover of the other book? The book on the table has a slight angle. it is not square.

1 hour of google and clicking insanely, I can't figure it out.

    Help!

    Thank you

None of the Affinity applications for Windows (or Mac) are tailored to work specifically on a touch-screen. If you have a touch-screen then you can certainly draw on it using the Windows applications, but you'll also need to interface with the standard Windows menu system. For example, undo is either Edit > Undo or Ctrl+Z. There's no Undo button on the Toolbar, and no gesture for Undo like the iPad applications have (2-finger tap). So it's either use the menu, or a physical keyboard, or the Windows On-Screen Keyboard. (That's just one example; I'm not sure how many others there are.)

All of the iPad applications (currently Photo, Designer, with Publisher coming someday) are designed specifically for use with touch-screens, and have their interface optimized for the touch-screen, and have gesture support built-in, and buttons like Undo/Redo if you want them.

(I have not tried a touch-screen with Windows, never having had a PC that supported one, and I'm very new at using my iPad. So I don't really know whether I would be happy using a touch-screen on Windows for the Affinity applications or not.)

That's what I needed to know. Thank you. i did notice when using my yoga laptop and drawing on the screen i had to flip my keyboard out to make a change. Don't remember what. But it was an inconvenience. Guess I'll have to think outside the box cause I cant see paying the price of a ipad for such a small screen. i was hoping to carry something around 14-16"

I can't draw crap with a mouse. I need a pen. especially with my none existent skill level. The mouse is to jittery and gets caught on the pad or I run out of room, etc, etc, etc.

    Thanks for the knowledge!

The Windows and Mac versions have the same interface regardless of the kind of device being used, and a number of application functions depend on having a keyboard available. Only the iPad applications are designed for full touch-screen use.

When you say full touch screen, can you explain?

I have a Lenova Yoga 2 in 1 laptop touch screen. What is the difference between the 2 as far as full touch screen?

Was thinking about this model    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x1/X1-Yoga-G6/p/22TP2X1X1Y6
