DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to tantababy in An easier way to make repeating patterns in AD
Hi Trent,
Nice video and yes that is a quick and easy way to make a seamless pattern. Problem I can see is that that method will only work for full drop patterns, if you want to do something else like diamond, scallops, ogee, half drop or brick it won't work. Using symbols as I described above also allows you to rotate, resize or flip your elements as the action will be done exactly the same way in the other symbols and there is no need to duplicate any elements. I tend to draw my own elements/assets and using the symbols method means it happens live around the whole design so I can alter, change and move anything as I go.
I guess it all depends on what your end goal is as to which method you prefer.

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to MEB in Import SVG / How to handle "Embedded Document" ?
Hi robert_muench,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Embedded documents are just that - a layer that contains a full document enclosed inside - but that act like a single object to which you can apply adjustments, layer effects etc. To edit it double-click the embedded document on canvas (this will open it in a new document tab) make your changes and close the embedded document tab. The embedded document in your original source document will be updated accordingly to reflect the changes you have made. Currently there's no way to convert an embedded document into objects. You have to either open the SVG using the File ▸ Open... command and copy the contents (layers/objects) of the file to the document you want, or double click the embedded document on canvas to open it in a new document tab, copy its contents (layer/objects) to the clipboard and then paste them in the original document deleting the embedded doc afterwards.

DesignerMim by Miriam got a reaction from MmmMaarten in Change Title of PDF
Just going this thread now — I'm on AD V2 and clearly this is still a bug. Thanking my lucky stars I bought the full package so I can edit titles when necessary. Thanks for the info everyone!

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to MmmMaarten in Change Title of PDF
I just by accident found out about this pdf title on a document that I created about a year ago and was on a website for all those months for customers to download without me knowing about this title. Thank god it wasn't a weird title, but it wasn't right for the document either.
After not finding a title-inputfield in the document settings to change this I searched on this forums and found this thread. I now understand the title is set to the first given filename and is never updated, but can be changed in a panel.
But to me this is so hidden that I'm pretty sure 99,9% of Affinity users don't know about this title field like me. Even if you find out about this thing the first place I'd look is in document settings.
Having a wrong title without even knowing about it could be 'dangerous' as who knows what the first filename was when first saving. It could have been some weird working title not intended for the final document.
Example of when this is critical:
I create a letter/invoice/whatever for customer A and save it to customer_A as a filename. Then later I use the same file as base for a letter/invoice/whatever for customer B by copying the file and saving it to customer_B as a filename. Then, without even knowing about this title field (or forgetting about it), I would have a title with customer_A in the letter/invoice/whatever of customer B without even knowing it. As a user I would never expect the first ever filename to still be even in the file.
Now pretend there is even more critical information inside the first ever filename wich is not meant for (other) customers... and it's in all document titles that used this file as base...
I don't think it's a great idea to ever save the filename as a title.
My suggestion to Affinity on this is: please give this title field a higher priority, move in into view: move the inputfield for it to the document settings. To me that's the place to look for such a thing.
And please make sure the title is shown somewhere during the export process when exporting a PDF so people can find out this title field exists and what it is set to. Then, if not satisfied, we can find the right way to change the field, but at least we then know it's there and might be set to the wrong title and needs to be changed.
But better: never save a filename in the title field. Make sure a user entered a custom title for the document or else leave the title blank in the export or ask the user to use the filename as a title when exporting to PDF.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: (BTW I also now understand why I have never seen this wrong title; I always check PDFs in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, and it is not showing the title in the header and tab, but the filename instead)

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to MEB in Rasterize resolution in Designer
Hi SteffenF,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Go to menu File ▸ Document Setup... and set the resolution you want for the document in the DPI field. All vector objects, layers effects etc will be then rasterised using this value.

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to thomasmoulson in Keep pen tool settings?
I’m having this exact same problem - seems silly, it should be default if anything that it uses your last preference of stroke size etc, not the other way round and keep reverting to default.. anyhow, synchronise defaults from selection is not working for me.. I want a certain brush stroke and a certain width but each new pencil stroke is reverting to default.. unusable!

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to markw in Wacom Intuos Pro setup
Hello BMS and welcome to the Affinity forums
If you have Zoom/Scroll set in the Wacom Preferences then you need to go into Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher’s Preferences > Tools and tick ‘Use mouse wheel to zoom’.
Alternately if you need to have ‘Use mouse wheel to zoom’ deactivated then in the Wacom prefs change Zoom/Scroll to just Zoom.
To have a button (physical or OnScreen) for 'Reset Rotation' you first need to make sure that you have a shortcut assigned to that action in your affinity app’s 'Keyboard Shortcuts' Preferences.
Then in the Wacom’s Prefs, for the physical or OnScreen buttons of your choice choose; 'Keystroke…' from the options and fill out the required fields.
Regarding other Tips, as the Pro line have almost infinite customisation possibilities it’s hard to say “set this to that, and that to this” it’s going to be whatever works best for your workflow.
But don’t forget to use the Wacom Tablet Utility to keep backups of your tablet’s settings. It’s very unlikely that you will need to use the Restore function but it’s nice to know that should disaster strike one day you can restore all your customised Wacom setting in just a couple of mouse clicks.

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to walt.farrell in Is there a "basic" set of brushes in vector brushes for Designer
The brushes in the Affinity applications were reworked in 1.8 and many of the older brushes were removed.
You can download the ones that @firstdefence attached above if you want them again, or refer to this Affinity Spotlight article for more details and the full set of legacy brushes for all the applications.

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to pyxelles in Thin white line when placing seamless patterns
This is a frustrating problem a lot of us who create repeat patterns have been experiencing and complaining about for a few years now. Those white lines emerge as soon as I create a clipping mask on my pattern swatch. When the pattern is repeated in a preview you can see the lines
I've search the internet and forums for a solution and can't find one that works. I've followed "the rules" and still even when I export the file as a PNG, the lines still show! It's beginning to look like an Affinity Designer bug which needs to be fixed ASAP.

Oh hello fine people! I've been around for a little while and realise I never introduced myself — how rude! haha
I'm Miriam. I live and work in Cape Town, South Africa. I'm a surface pattern designer, illustrator, and graphic designer. I discovered the Affinity apps about 2 years ago now and I've never looked back! I have a rescue doglet called Josie, who monitors my working hours closer than a micromanager!
I just wanted to say hello! So, um, hello!!

Woweee!!! That's an amazing shot! Kind of gives a new meaning to the term, "tongue lashing", doesn't it?
😂😯
Also, the lion is equally amazing. Beautiful work!

DesignerMim by Miriam reacted to deepfat in Introduce Yourself
@jmwellborn I could but that shot is straight off the camera with a bit of cropping etc. so it's not my work in affinity- I don't normally do too much post processing as I am old school and try and preserve what I saw.
This is another shot with just a crop and yes crickets were harmed during this photo shoot in the new forest

True..but don't need to if just painting (raster)..can get a bit more control and mix the two types of brushes...+ can use them to create ink outlines with shading;then back fill with colour.. suppose it depends on the effect/s you are tying to achieve...
A bit like this one (ongoing!)

Pleasure!.. and thank you for the comment..
I have quite a collection of Palettes!....and brushes!. The Palettes just evolve as I draw but some are worth keeping!
Everyone has artistic ability.. just need to to tap into it!...oh! and draw a lot...The way I draw has changed a lot over the past 4 years..I use a lot of reference images.. #Inktober has been a great help...It would be nice to finish on time for once though...but theI think my drawings are too large and complex for that..Good prompts this year though..I am really pleased I bought these apps.. haven't really looked back! they are perfect for what I wanted to achieve..
Give it a go..
the tools are all there!
The leaves are easy to create...It's why I make base shapes for a lot my drawings (There are a lot of them in resources!)..If you are going to paint then it is a great advantage to have a base shape to start with.
1. Just place one from the assets sheet onto page.
2. Draw around it with a sketch brush (or add line! or vector line)...sketching is better as moves away from overly clean vectors...on a separate layer. (Separate layer as may need to under-paint)
3. Duplicate the layer or object ... add the base colour to vector (greenish in this case)..Rasterise the result (now have a pixel base in the correct colour onto which you can paint)
4. Turn on protect alpha (helps.. avoids having to draw around the edge)
5. Paint over with some texture brushes...Using darker colour of base colour for shadows and lighter colours for the highlights....Use a texture or grunge brush initially to get a pattern
6 Remember to use opacity with brush.. gives greater control and it's just a tap of key (0-9)..lets you build up colour
There you go!

... the A4 Affinity Designer template looks like this, dependent on the language (DE/EN/GR) switch ...
You set and switch the corresponding language like this for the german (DE) calendar part ...
.. or like this for english (EN) calendar part ...
To add your images into the calendar follow the localized instructions like written onto this shown 2022 calendar variation ...
