  1. @Dan C

What does Factory Reset do? I don't really want to click that and end up losing brushes palettes and stuff

Anyway I just tried it again without Factory Reset and it seemed to default to black this time - I don't know why it wasn't before or sometimes doesn't - just seems like constant problems getting the pixel brush to lay something down but hopefully if I get into a method then it should start working better

Got the Pixel Layer to add automatically again now though cheers

  2. So if I go into Pixel Mode and select a brush I'm brushing away there and as usual nothing is appearing on my screen

Often this is because of something I've forgotten to set

If it isn't then it's usually then because the software - even though the colour palette is set to a colour - defaults to Fill None until a colour is selected - even if it's the one already selected on the colour wheel I have to go in and re set it to the same colour ( usually white or black initially )

Can the software not just be set to default to whatever is selected on the Colour picker - and if I don't want that colour or Oops I forgot to change the colour then I can just go and change it - as I apparently have to do anyway before I can see what brush strokes are laying down - why would I choose a brush and then start putting down strokes with No Fill ??? can it not even just default to black or something instead of No Fill ?

Can the devs please just fix this in the next update because I've been using this software for 3/4 years now and I still struggle with getting the pixel brush to work - I'd just like to be able to go in to Pixel mode and everything just works without having to bugger about nearly every time it seems

A seamless experience with Affinity software is what I aspire to greatly but it just always seems to throw something at me

It also used to add pixel layers automatically but now it doesn't and I can't remember where the setting is for that so if anyone could remind me thanks

The .affinity directory is located in your Windows %USERPROFILE% directory, which is located on your C drive. You can move the .affinity directory, though it's probably not technically a supported configuration if you do so.

When I've done this I've used symlinks, and it has worked acceptably for me. There's a set of instructions in the post below. Use the V2 instructions (second set):

That all sounds like a lot of tinkering under the hood - I don't know what you mean by "supported configuration" but if it means I stand a better chance of recovering files after a crash then I could just keep in mind not to let that file get too bloated - the app has crashed a couple of times in the past few days but that may be me using some previous documents containing a ridiculous amount of enormous pixel layers

Alternatively maybe I could just uninstall everything and reinstall all of it on my HDD - I guess this involves one of the two different installers I don't really understand ?

Hi PyC and Welcome to the Forums,

This has come up before on the Forums here and here  This file is only used when there isn't enough memory for it to load images or other assets.  It should be cleared when you restart the app.  It also can't be moved to a different drive.

Trying to get my head round how this has just caused 58GB of data to bloat up my C Drive?

58GB - since I last restarted the app?

  5. Having computer issues right now on account of my C Drive being maxxed out !!!

I looked into this and there's about 60GB of something in some .affinity folder - 60GB of what?

I have a measly 250GB SSD on this PC along with a 2GB HD which is where I store all my documents relating to Affinity - I can't be having this software dumping a load of unnecessary crap in there - anyone know what might be going on here and how to fix it?

I've got all my games and stuff installed on my HD and only a few things on the SSD - I see the Affinity Suite is one of them - is there a reason why this has to be installed there? The main programs only takes a few GB so it's not a problem but if it's going to be taking up 60GB in the background then I'd rather it was on my HDD

How do I install and use this V2 suite properly because it's been a bit of a mystery since I upgraded - I'd like some say in where things are going on my computer!

@awakenedbyowls Auto-scroll doesn't have anything to do with your question so ignore it. Once I discovered that I can't find out what brush you used previously, once you close the file, I also learned to label the layer with the name of the brush. After a while I learned that I tend to use the same brushes - at least on a current project - so I made a category of my favorites then I can find them easily.

    Cheers

I'm still getting to grips with the brushes - been struggling to get good effects using the standard brushes or if I do it seems to take ages - it really does open up a lot of things designing own brushes

Still in the early stages of forming my own sets of favourites

    Hi @awakenedbyowls,
There's no way to know which brush was used in a previously saved document. Those are raster brushes - we only save the ones used in pixel layers (clicking the brush icon in the respective layer in the Layers panel) for the current session. After saving and closing the document that information is lost. The brushed strokes are simply "backed" in the raster data of the layer - there's no way to know the brush used to paint them.

I see now - useful to know I can look back on pixel strokes and find out what brush it is while I'm still working on an open document which saves me having to necessarily type each one into the layer title

If I click on each brush highlighted there though it doesn't take me to the brush in the brushes panel automatically though - is there a way to set it to do that ? that would be useful or even if the software could display the name of the brush too ?

Another question: Is there an easy way to sync my brush categories between Windows and iPad?

Did you not read what I wrote or look at the video?

The active brush jumps into view, complete with a blue highlight, when the tool is chosen. I deliberately set the brush panel to a different brush set so that this would occur. Auto-scroll is, not surprisingly, to be found on the brush panel's menu.

You are making yourself too difficult to help, so good luck.

Seems to be difficult for you to just explain what you mean by auto-scroll..

When I click on the brush or the eraser it doesn't highlight the brush unless I'm in the same category - I have until now made a point of writing the brush used in the title of the layer but sometimes I forget or I'm also moving from file to file also which probably further complicates things - maybe the key to using the brush/eraser tool is in this auto-scroll which you appear not to want to elucidate further upon - auto scroll what ? I don't even understand what this means in the context of brushes other than scrolling through layers or brushes ???

I have auto-scroll enabled I see but I still don't know What It Means

You want to know which brush was used for given tool, yes? If not, please rephrase your question. And maybe be a bit more constructive with people who are trying to help you.

The video shows clearly how selecting a brush tool will (with auto-scroll enabled) bring into focus the brush which was last chosen to be used with that tool. Regardless of which brush set is in view beforehand, auto-scroll will allow you to easily identify the last selected brush for the active tool.

I cannot put this any clearer

You could explain what auto-scroll is?

The tool I choose will default to selecting the brush last used yes - but what if I'm in a different brush category and I've got a lot of categories ?

How do I figure out what the brush is without looking through all the categories which for all I suspect will probably cause the selected brush to be unselected maybe too - I'm just looking for the brush which I matched to the brush icon on the layers panel and when I moved to the category it was in it wasn't selected - so I think this workaround there only works if you are still in the category where the brush you were using is

With the Brushes panel visible and auto-scroll enabled in its context menu, selecting a brush tool should prompt the active brush to appear in view and be highlit in blue. So, if you use different brushes for different tools (there is a preference which influences brush sharing) you can at least see the last brush which was used with any given tool.

Again I don't think this is what I was asking - I don't know what auto-scrolling is or what you are trying to say here - all the video shows is you selecting the Brush Tool

And what is this video showing and why isn't it embedded?

You can inspect and edit brush settings by clicking on the symbol in the tools area.

Affinity brushes are kind of templates. Whenever you start using a brush, you can modify the brush settings in any aspect and create a new brush. Affinity only shows the actual derived brush, not the brush name from the brush panel.

This isn't really what I asked

I can see a brush symbol on the pixel layers which shows brushes used and I can figure it out from that now but it doesn't say which one was used as a brush and which as an eraser - I also tried looking into this brush symbol on my iPad I think before and it just didn't do anything - but now I click on it I can see what brushes have been used on that pixel layer !

Is that what you mean ?

Not sure why some pixel layers show this and some don't though..

  12. I'm playing around with brushes and building up some brush sets from things I've already designed

Should I make these from .png files the largest size I expect to use the brush for, ie. I've going along the principle that the largest brush width is about 4,000 pixels so I'm taking vector shapes and rasterising them on 2000px square canvasses with the image in the centre with around 1000px maximum width or height so if I use a smaller brush it's not scaling anything up

Is that too much - ie. will it impact performance and slow things down if I make these too large?
