  1. I'm confused about how inches and pixels are converted when the unit of measure is entered in various fields in Affinity apps. Some fields seem to convert inches to pixels or vice versa based on the DPI set in the document, while in other fields the conversion always seems to be based on 96 PPI and the document DPI doesn't matter.

For example, when editing the document margins or editing an object in the Transform Panel, both behave as I would expect — if Document Units is set to Inches and Document DPI  is 72, entering 72 px sets the value to 1 inch; if Document DPI is 300, entering 300 px sets the value to 1 inch.

However, when editing Text Styles, entering px values in any of the Paragraph Spacing fields doesn't convert the px values as I expect... 96px is converted to 1 inch no matter what I have the Document DPI set at.

Is this intended behavior, and if so, can someone help me understand why?

  2. Here’s how to precisely align an object(s) to another object.

    1. Create each paragraph in a separate text frame (or artistic text).
    2. Select the object you want to align to (square with number). Keeping the first object selected, select the paragraph layer you want to align.
    3. On the toolbar, click Alignment. In the Align Vertically section, click the Align Middle icon, and in the Align to drop-down, select First Selected.
    4. Click the Apply button.

Note: If the text was created with the Frame Text Tool, you will need to fit the frame to the frame text in order for the text to be visually aligned to the key object. Double-click the edge handle at the bottom center of the text frame... this will remove extra space between the last line of text and the frame's bottom edge.

  3. When I change the master page applied to a page, some of the content doesn’t migrate.

The document has two master pages — one of the masters has a larger height than the other. When I change the master that’s applied to a page (selecting Replace Existing and Migrate), if the current master is shorter than the new master, content migrates; if the current master is longer than the new master, the content in the text frame at the top of the page doesn’t migrate.

To reproduce the issue in the attached example document:

    1. Apply the 3-Col Long master page to one of the pages (Replace Existing and Migrate).
    2. When prompted with “Target pages differ in size to the master. Would you like to resize them to match?” select Yes.
    3. On the same page, apply the 3-Col master (Replace Existing and Migrate).
    4. When prompted with “Target pages differ in size to the master. Would you like to resize them to match?” select Yes.

The heading at the top of the page doesn’t migrate after switching back to the shorter master.

If in step 4 above, I select No to resizing the page, all content does migrate.

If you restart  after uninstalling V1 (this performs slightly different actions than a shut down) do your thumbnails now display as expected please?

Unfortunately not. I uninstalled Affinity Photo V1 (the only remaining V1 app installed on my computer), restarted my computer (Start menu > Power > Restart), and now Affinity files do not display in the File Explorer preview pane.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, I'm referring to the File Explorer preview pane, not the thumbnails in the main area of File Explorer.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I have the Universal License and installed the apps using the MSIX installers.

Let me know if you need any additional information. Appreciate your help.

There must be something new in v2 that makes the program or document to be closed first.

I've noticed the same behavior — after creating and saving a V2 file, the file must be closed in order for the thumbnail and preview to display in File Explorer. But before I reinstalled Affinity Photo V1, the preview of V2 files never displayed, even after closing the file.

Do you get them back if you reinstall one of the V1 apps?

Good thinking Walt. Yep, I installed Affinity Photo V1 and the issue is resolved — previews for all 3 Affinity apps now display in the File Explorer preview pane.

After installing Photo V1, I uninstalled it and the preview pane issue came back. I have installed Photo V1 again so resolve the issue, but I'd like to keep V1 uninstalled.

    Any ideas?

  7. Previews for all Affinity app files (V1 and V2 files) recently stopped being displayed in the Windows File Explorer preview pane. File previews used to display. When File Explorer view mode is set to icons, the file thumbnails do display, but still nothing in the preview pane. Anybody have an idea what the issue may be?

I have 'Save thumbnails with documents' enabled in Affinity settings.

The only recent changes on my computer: updated to Affinity 2.0.4 and deleted the V1 apps. I think the issue stated happening after the update and deletion of the V1 apps, but I'm not positive.

  8. I hope Serif is able to update the Preferences help pages to include all preferences.

It would be helpful if the preference description was placed in front of the explanation in the help pages. It would make it easier to quickly find the preference setting you're looking for when viewing help.

    For example:

    • Reopen document on startup: Choose whether to restore the last session when launching application.
    • Documents open in a new floating window: Choose whether documents open in a floating window separate from the app's main window.

And a bit more detailed information would be helpful for some of the preferences.

    Hi @Brian_J

Can you still recreate this on the latest version 2.0.3?

I often avoid the zoom technique that has been causing the app to freeze (a technique I normally rely on heavily). I do use it sometimes after saving my file first, and I haven't experienced the issue recently... but it's an intermittent issue. Based on what THEDZKO mentioned, it sounds like the issue is still occurring.

I'll try to remember to comment in this post if the issue happens again.

  10. I have the same issue. This issue occurs in Affinity Photo and Designer V1 and V2.

Some time ago, I uninstalled Photo V1 and reinstalled it — the first time I pasted a screenshot it was aligned to the canvas, but the issue surfaced soon after. I don't remember if the issue came back after the first time I closed/opened the app. Similarly, when I first installed V2, the first time I pasted a screenshot it was aligned to the canvas, but the issue started happening in V2 at some point... again, I don't remember if the issue began occurring after the first time I closed/opened the app.

Turning the ruler on/off has no affect.

  11. I have the same issue. I have a two-monitor set up. When I take a screenshot, this is what I observe:

    • The left side of the screenshot shows 3 px of the right side of the right monitor.
    • 3 px of the right side of the screenshot (right monitor) is cut off.
    • Nothing is missing in the center of the screenshot, but the position where the left and right monitor meet is offset right 3 px. The point where the left and right monitor meet should be the exact center of the screenshot (1920 px), but they meet at 1923 px.

This issue occurs in Affinity Photo and Designer V2. The issue does not occur V1.

Enabling and disabling Force Pixel Alignment has no affect.

  12. One option is to apply Recolor and Curves adjustments.

    1. Sample the color in the green candle to get the hue.
    2. Apply a Recolor adjustment, set the hue to the hue of the sampled green color and adjust the saturation as needed.
    3. Apply a Curves adjustment to darken the color.

Even after the Curves adjustment is applied, shadows may be washed out, so it may be necessary to apply gradients or use some method to darken the shadows. I added a gradient (dark to transparent) on the right side of the candle in the example below to darken it a bit.

I used images from one of your other posts. The mask needs more work, but these are the adjustments I used to get a pretty close match to the green candle. I don't do much photo editing — there may be better approaches to accomplish this.

I can't find the text frame options box you posted. How do I bring that up?

In the menu: Window > Text > Text Frame. The panel will open in the Right Studio where all your other panels are most likely located.

It takes time to get acquainted with everything… we’ve all been where you are. Ain’t no such thing as a dumb question… ask ‘em when you get stuck. 🙂

Thanks Brian, is the pencil tool also vector?

Yes, the Pencil Tool is vector. And I should have been more clear in my previous comment, there is a Vector Brush Tool in Designer… I assumed you referring to the Paint Brush Tool, which may not have been the case.

You can tell an object is vector by the blue line (path) that is the shape of the object that has nodes (white squares/circles) along the path.

     Vector paths:

QUESTION: If I create a line drawing using the designer pen or brush tool how do I get it to export as vector so it's clear like the text portion is in PDF etc??

The Pen Tool creates vector object that export as vector. The Brush Tool is raster and there’s no way to covert raster to vector during export. For logos, it’s best to stick with the vector tools so the logo is scalable… i.e., I’d advise staying away from the Brush Tool.
