when did I last save?!’ It certainly kept you on your toes and encouraged you to hit 🍎-S regularly—a habit I’m still in today!

Haha, me too! Sometimes — as I'm saving a file that I just saved 10 seconds ago — I think, I must hit Ctrl+S more than anybody on earth. But for the most part, Ctrl+S is in my muscle memory... I do it constantly without thinking about it. It's comforting to know there are still other old timers out there.

If that is not confirmation of the scheme, I don't know what is! 😠

They have completely lost any connection to V1 and are relying on just anyone upgrading without a second thought, it appears.

If they had been serious about their »… or you can just keep using V1« statement, something as simple as a warning message would have been on board with V2 from the start, damn it! I'm sorry, but this kind of attitude from them really pisses me off.

I have no affiliation with Serif, so I can't speak to their motives, but I doubt they are scheming to trick users into upgrading. The people at Serif are normal humans, like you and me... they have accomplishments and they make mistakes. Hopefully they have processes in place to learn from their mistakes and incorporate that learning into process improvement. There are things about v2 that I'm not pleased with, but a lot of things I am happy about as well. I have to believe that within Serif, the goal of maximizing profit leaves room for caring about us customers (which isn't how I feel about many larger companies).

I get that there are things about v2 that piss you off. If Serif has the internal systems in place to learn from all the v2 feedback, then I think they have a bright future.

Only I don't remember all the files I opened... at least where should be some sort of info from Affinity... right? or i just miss something.

@StraightFromSpace Yeah, Serif has acknowledged they should have included a notification of some sort when a file created in v1 is saved from v2. They are working on adding that to v2. It's understandably frustrating to not be given advanced warning.

It looks to me that the beautifully-designed v1 app originally developed for the Mac Platform has been dumbed down and mangled into an ugly compromise, to make it compatible with Windows and to meet a marketing deadline.

I can appreciate your affinity for MacOS, but the Affinity v1 apps were compatible with Windows. I wonder if the v2 UI decisions were influenced more by the design team’s style judgments / preferences rather than to accommodate Windows OS.

There are 2 issues here :-

    1. One is consistency.
99.999% of apps adopt the Mac user interface guidelines - Radio Buttons of whatever form are mutually exclusive - and therefore not suitable for things like enabling/disabling non-mutually-exclusive items such as layers.

    2. The other is usability.
Grey dots on a grey background are ambiguous - being able to tell what is ON or what is OFF depends on the user's ability to discriminate 'shades of grey'.

There is a reason why the term 'shades of grey' has become a synonym for 'unclear'.

So - as far as v2 is concerned :-

    - anything resembling a Radio Button is not appropriate for layers - because layers are not mutually-exclusive

    - solid dots don't work because they are ambiguous.

    Completely agree.

In that case it is unlikely, as I am on a Mac.  It looks the same on the iPad also.

I believe the sample image was the concoction of another poster, above, given as a suggested improvement.  I don't think it is an actual screenshot from the application.

@fde101 Ah, okay. Well, good to know you Mac users aren't getting special treatment in this case. 😉

I think the 'new' look and feel is horrible, and significantly detracts from usability rather than enhancing it.

I agree with some of your thoughts about the UI. Much of the UI is too dim, fonts are too small, and there's not enough contrast for me. Some areas of the UI look like they are in a disabled state (but they aren't), like the Snapping drop-down and Preferences.

Reordering layers was touted in one of the Serif videos as being improved. I don't know if it's better on Apple devices, but on Windows, it's difficult for me to see the difference between dragging a layer to clip, as a child, or above/below another layer.

I like the functionality of v2. I'm happy about some of the features that have been added and was thrilled to discover a couple minor issues in v1 that really bugged me have been corrected. I hope Affinity revisits the UI in v2 and can make some changes to address the contrast and font sizes.

I wish I could simply select a guide like an object … and delete.

Me too! That's a feature I liked in Illustrator.

Something I find especially frustrating about deleting ruler guides is that I usually have to zoom out to make an area of the Document View visible that's outside the canvas/artboard so I can drag the guide off the canvas/artboard. I wish ruler guides could be deleted by dragging them to the ruler.
