Bump because I'd like to know. Also one thought in this particular photo what are you hoping to achieve when if there is a way of elimintating specific pixels by value?
FWIW, you will get a better result by painstakingly selecting what you want.

Have you tried making the original even darker to compensate for the change, just to see if it would work.
It could aslo have something to do with the color space you're using. Or the way you are getting to greyscale. Try making it greayscale before saving. Then just save it.
It could also have something to do with the file type, try saving as png or other if you don't absolutely need jpeg.

Sorry just relized that I really also would like to convert in the program into bmp, like all little dots looking kind of images. Not just block pixles.
