Affinity Photo 1.9+ Crashes Beyond Belief

I just bought Affinity Photo (version 1.9.1.979) for the very first time, through Microsoft. From the start, it won't open Jpeg files or (Canon EOS 70D) RAW Cr2 files. It will open tiff files- but very, very slowly. Sometimes, none at all. No matter how small the jpeg file, it won't open them - which is ridiculous. In all cases, except for .tiff files, Affinity Photo just hangs forever with the message "Loading 1 document..."
For the .tiff files it does open, it always, without exception, crashes after just a few seconds of work on the file (eg, contrast, levels, or brightening).
Rebooting changes nothing, and I'm unable to try a fresh install because the initial install was done by MS online.
I've contacted Affinity support by email and eagerly await their help.
Very disappointing so far, after all the good things I read about it.
Has anyone else experienced the same issue?
