do not understand why is not suported directx 12 (11_0) (in my case nVidia gt730)

I can run davinci resolve 4k raw video files with cuda and no problems, open a photoshop  psd with 20 layers ,  but can not open  a simple image with 2 layers in affinity?
    :(

You can open 2 layers in Affinity though? You just can't enable hardware acceleration? Photoshop won't be using your GPU to load that PSD with 20 layers.

  4. @AiDon "Retina Rendering" is probably a bad name for it on Windows to be honest, but it refers to the high quality render pass. You can either have 1 pass or 2:

    * A single low quality pass (fast, but low quality)

    * A single high quality pass (slow, but high quality)

    * 2 passes, first low, then high (fast to show the initial low quality, then async bring the high quality render in afterwards)

It shouldn't make a difference, other than having different rendering characteristics that may trigger the driver to behave in a bad way.

  5. Hi @Christian W., my point was that the feature in the other app isn't directly tied to the BMP file format, rather the bit depth of the image. I used the following setting to write the image with red text (note that it doesn't matte the image, resulting in a transparent background):

    image.png

I then loaded it back into Designer, selected the image, and recoloured it via the colour wheel. Resulting in:

    image.png

As I see this topic is still unsolved as of Nov. 2020, here’s another urgent vote pro BMP.

This is not an application but a use case only accepting BMP:  As far as I know it’s the only format allowing me to place the same graphic file multiple times into the same print layout (Indesign so far, on my side, because of clients’ needs) and assign different colours and tints to each of them – exactly the way I assign colour to a line of text. It can be a huge time-saver not having to create lots of different-coloured TIFFs when colour is the only factor that differs between them. – Or are there other, Affinity-supported file formats that would do the job? I currently don’t know any.

I can't see why that would be specific to BMP? Have you tried PNG?

Ok Mark, this is the new crash report after following the above steps.

Thanks - that has given us a better capture, unfortunately though it looks like you have an optional OS update installed (Windows 10.0.19041.610) which is causing Microsoft to not find some files that are required for debugging. I'll see whether we experience the same crash after installing this optional update.

Thanks Mark & Dan, I did have a good internet connection with this issue. I have attached the Zip file as requested Mark. Regards, Geoff

Apologies, this still hasn't enabled us to debug the crash report.

Could you try the following steps for me please:

    1. Rename the file C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo Customer Beta\Photo.exe.config to Photo.exe.config.old
    2. Download the attached file, and copy it to C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo Customer Beta\Photo.exe.config
    3. Delete old crash reports
    4. Run Photo, click on Register to generate a new crash report
    5. Upload the new crash report
    6. Delete C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo Customer Beta\Photo.exe.config
    7. Rename the file C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo Customer Beta\Photo.exe.config.old to Photo.exe.config

    Thanks.

Instead of being forced to use HW acceleration by default, it would be better to implement a splash screen of sorts (like in many video games) which presents the option to users at the time of startup. I don't want to miss out on using the program just because I have (supposedly) obsolete hardware that is limited to DX11. For all I know, I may never even be using it to create very large, complex pieces of work that demand powerful GPUs. The software/processor based implementation would suffice for my use case 🙂.

You're not, it's on by default if your hardware supports it (or at least it's supposed to work that way...). If you don't have the hardware, the app will work exactly the same as it always has done.

For me, with Hardware Acceleration enabled (but with no GPU that supports it), I cannot:

    • Create a New document via File > New. The initial dialog opens, but when I click Create the program crashes.
    • Without a document open, I cannot switch to the Pixel Persona and then look at the Brushes panel. As soon as I click on its tab, the program crashes. It works fine in the Designer Persona.

After I disable Hardware Acceleration and restart Designer, both these functions work properly.

I assume that you can't re-enable the option? After you've disabled the option, then restarted the app?
