wonderings replied to Ericwm's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Seems like a strange work flow unless you are constantly opening every single picture you take with Photos. AS John Rostron mentioned you might be able to create a sort of hot folder that does this, but again I am not sure why you would want it this way. Save to a folder then edit the ones you want seems like the best approach. -
Affinity for Android
wonderings replied to IbrahimGHO's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
iOS is dying? Someone should tell Apple and their year after year record profits and high iPhone and iPad sales. And you should not buy anything you do not want to buy. If you are using Android then it obviously would not make sense for you to buy an iOS app. Now if you are using Windows or Mac, not sure why not Android version would keep you from buying that if the software fits your needs.- 155 replies

Even with a perpetual license you do not not technically own your software. Adobe could cancel the service and revoke if they wished. It is more semantics really as it is a one time purchase so feels more like ownership then the subscription.

When you login to your Adobe account and see your serial numbers, you are saying that does not activate? I have had no issues with serial numbers for CS5 or CS6 activating. Your Mac does not reject a serial number, the number is verified and approved by Adobe. I like that I can login to my Adobe account on there website and see all the products I own and have access to my serial numbers. Much easier then remembering where these ancient numbers would be kept if I had physicals.

Who assured you that your version of Adobe CS would work with Yosemite and Sierra?. That being said I have had success installing CS5 and CS6 in High Sierra. I simply installed though out of curiosity, I was able to open the apps, that was all I did as I use Adobe CC. Your serial code is still workable as long as the computer you are installing it on meets the system requirements.

I would say it would not be a good idea to be collaborating with a team and using different software than they are. This is not a knock against Affinity, it really is a logical approach and will make life much easier then constantly fixing back and forth when Indesign opens the saved IDML file from Publisher and when Publisher then opens the IDML file saved from Indesign. It makes no sense if you truly do want to work on projects collaboratively. I speak highly of the 3 apps Affinity has made, they are an amazing value and feature rich. I would not replace Adobe with them yet but they are off to a great start.

I think this might be the first thread I have read not simply asking for software to be created but to actually buy another company and then make a windows version of that companies product. I think it is a bit strange asking them to create software you want and even more so asking them to buy a company. I have my own crazy ideas, why don't you (the OP) become a large investor in the company, bring in the funds and capital to buy another company, staff it and create and support a brand new product. Sounds like a great idea to me!

If collaboration with those using Adobe is essential to you then Affinity is not for you. All you are asking for is trouble if you are looking for any software to work with Indesign files. I can't see production being down because of a bad file that looked ok in Indesign but did something weird in Publisher and you are now trying to fix it. This seems to be missed by so many people asking for this. It sounds like people want Indesign but are not willing to pay for Indesign so are hoping someone will make a cheap version. Publisher is feature rich and an amazing product for the price but it is not Indesign or handle Indesign files (IDML) perfectly. I have done tests with simple business cards with placed PSD files and .AI files in an INDML file. Opened in Publisher and it was a mess. Not sure why anyone would want to go down this route of trying to work side by side with Indesign. I can see changing over and thus reworking files as needed, but never working back and forth with Indesign users while trying to keep using Publisher.

If I was setting up a magazine that was going to have a poster in the middle to remove I would keep the posters as a separate file unless you are wanting the content in the magazine to be on the back of poster, which just seems unnecessary. I would set my magazine like normal. I would set my poster as a separate file as it would be printed separately because of the different page size and the way magazines are laid out for print. The poster printed separately would be folded and inserted into the centre of the magazine and saddle stitched with the rest of the magazine.

Does Designer support multi page documents? I took an 8 page publisher file and tried opening that in Designer on my Mac. The file opened and showed 8 pages to navigate but it was all the first page. I would say there is either a glitch for multipage Publisher files or Designer cannot actually work with multipage documents. I am sure someone who uses the software regularly will have a better answer. I will say it seems scary to take a page layout program file and edit in a vector editing program. Not something I would dream of doing with Indesign and Illustrator, they are different programs for a reason.

Menu Tabs: different color options
wonderings replied to karlbu's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
Not an answer but if you are using the applications regularly and not changing your layout it really becomes muscle memory. I have no issues with Indesign and the panels I have all the time, I instinctively go towards them without needing to scan over everything. The same thing would happen for colour coding, you would remember that blue = whatever and you would just learn and remember. This really is no difference between the text labels and colour labels, both will have you learning and remembering where they are. -
I was questioning its use because a variable font I tried did not export well to PDF, I thought this was a common problem with variable fonts and PDFs for print at the moment. After trying a different variable font I did not have the issue so I think it was isolated. If the fonts work and export fine for pdf and print then I think they are an amazing upgrade to how we use fonts.

I don't think anyone is upset, I know I am not. I am just commenting on the out of the blue posts asking for software and my assumption that people want more from Serif because the prices are fantastic for what you get. Yes you could make money using the Affinity apps but I think there is still a lot to come before it is truly on par with Adobe CC. Photos is one piece in the puzzle, Designer and Publisher have a ways to go still to match Illustrator and InDesign. They are not severely lacking in anything but they are just not there yet. I again am not sure where the assumption is that they would do AutoCad software well. This is a very different application than the standard 3 used by a variety of graphic professionals. This could be right out of their wheel house without hiring new talent who understand. On the other hand it could be great, there really is no way to know and this is why I question when people say they would buy as soon as one was released knowing nothing about it.

Had no clue it was available as a panel in the Affinity apps. I only test and do some light playing around with the Affinity apps as I watch it grow. All my word is done in Adobe. When I use Unsplash I use the website.

Affinity products for Linux
wonderings replied to a topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
The numbers are so small for people voting, especially when you get 3 votes. So all the votes for Affinity could really be 3x less if people are doing what they say and voting 3 times for the same thing. Not a huge number of eager people, or it just has not reached all that many people who care. Judging by the amount of threads and posts in the numerous Linux discussions on this form I would have expected it to sky rocket to number 1 in a day at least. -
I never get why people say they would buy something without even knowing if the said product would be any good. I am guessing this is another person looking for close to pro level software at bargain basement prices. That all being said Affinity has 3 apps that is their focus, Designer, Photos and Publisher, they are a tremendous value for the money and even better if you get it when on sail for 50%.

I am looking forward to version 2.0
wonderings replied to Johannes's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
I think my biggest want would be for them to overhaul how colour is handled and the colour panels themselves. So many threads with simple issues trying to get a PDF with straight forward colours. Also the colour panels are overly complex and not intuitive at all. They should literally just copy Adobe on this one as they have it perfect. -
I did a test in Designer. I made a CMYK box. All CMYK colour is 23.25%. It rounded down to 23% for each colour. I then exported as a PDF and checked the separations in Acrobat and had the same, 23% for each colour. I then opened the PDF in Illustrator and the CMYK makeup is the colour I set to in Designer, 23.25% for each CMYK. Indesign shows 23% as well rounding down. Indesign will do this will files as well not displaying the decimals. You can do decimal places though for CMYK in Indesign, just does not seem to import that from files placed.

Where are you all using variable fonts? I tried a variable font in Indesign, love the options it gives to adjust a font but it seems that when it came to making a PDF for print the fonts were no good in the PDF for this application. Simple work around was outline the fonts in Indesign. Is this strictly for web use right now?

Affinity on GNU/Linux
wonderings replied to Waffelo's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
Not to be rude but do you not look at the forum? In this sub section alone there are now 4 threads with Linux in the name, all devoted to the same thing. There is active and lively discussions regarding Affinity on Linux and some attempting to get notice for Wine support. -
Please Lightroom Replacement!
wonderings replied to BluestarCK's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
Again not understanding, you like Serif better because it offers less? I would imagine the real reason is Serif is much much cheaper then Adobe which is why I think people keep asking for things like video editing apps among other things as they are hoping to get more quality software for very little money. -
Please Lightroom Replacement!
wonderings replied to BluestarCK's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
Not sure what the reasoning is there, you want a program like Lightroom from Affinity, but Affinity is much much smaller and does not want to spread themselves thin (my assumption) by offering to many applications it cannot properly support whereas Adobe has the resources and the applications to do anything you need to do. What is not to like about Adobe? -
Please Lightroom Replacement!
wonderings replied to BluestarCK's topic in Feedback for the V1 Affinity Suite of Products
yes and lots of people think a video app, or animation tools, or pdf viewers, or a host of other things would be a perfect asset as well. Serif is not an Adobe or have the resources that Adobe has. I am sure in time with success with the current 3 products they will add some new applications, but I don't think it will be anytime soon.
