Sharp photos and small pdf's
FredVN replied to FredVN's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
The main reason to use 400 dpi is to export in the highest quality. Then just one time compress the pdf. The goal remains an e-book. If models want to print it they can just do that from that higher resolution. For that I do always make sure that the booklet has a multiple of 4 pages. And yes, those are indeed the file sizes from that 86 Mb. On a future shoot, I want to use both ILovePDF and compression within Publisher to assess the differences in both file size and quality. Now looking for a model… 😀 -
Sharp photos and small pdf's

Yes, these are the hints I needed. Test Booklet: 15 random jpg , 10-27 Mb In different ways page filled AFPUB 280 Mb PDF 400 dpi 86 Mb PDF 300 dpi 96 Mb HUH????? Both jpg compression on and 100% quality Then the 400 dpi 86 Mb compressed with https://www.ilovepdf.com/compress_pdf Free and works very simply. Unfortunately a limit of 200 Mb There are 3 types of compression resulting in: Low 1.3 Mb Medium 5.6 Mb High 17.0 Mb. Actually I wanted to test a few different options but the result with the hires photos and the highest dpi is good enough for me at the moment. Later I will see if I can optimize this some more. @Thomaso: thanks again. -
Sharp photos and small pdf's

Thanks. This gives a series of good leads for some tests. I will be working on them over the next few days. Especially towards a good option for pdf compression. And let hear the result, of course. -

After a photo shoot, I like to send the model not only the hires photos, but also an e-book. I use Affiniy Publisher 2 for this. To make this in terms of file size not too big I compress the jpg's to < 1 M and for the pdf export use raster pdi 72 or 96. I leave the other values unchanged. Logically, the result is often a “bit less”: especially not sharp. Until now I can get somewhat sharper shots with somewhat larger jpg's, but also very large pdf's. Who has experience with a more optimal setup of such a photo book: sharp pictures and small pdf?

Extra line in TOC
FredVN replied to FredVN's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Yes! It's gone. The only problem is now that I don't know when and how I did it. It was the first time I played with Find/Replace and I saw some things in my document on page 36-38, that could be done better. I did and... bingo. Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction. I hope that one day I will understand what I did here. 😔 -
When I update my TOC I get on page 36 a header (correct) and under it a dotted line with the same page number (wrong). I searched a lot on the page but could not find the cause. No answers with google too. Of course I can use the quick-and-dirty way and remove the line from the TOC. But I prefer to know how this can happen and modify that. Any ideas how I can find/see where the problem occurs?

Oops. 😯 Because I'm interested in photo editing, I was a bit too enthusiastic. OK, I will behave again. 😉

Possible. But Pixelmator is a Mac-program. And I don't have a Mac... BTW. I only use APub. For my photo work I use for a long time Lightroom as main program and Luminar, Aurora HDR and Topaz ShapenAI when needed. But we go off-topic.

Thanks. I will definitely try this one somewhere the next days. Let's hope the topic starter can also use it.

I don't know if https://www.topazlabs.com/gigapixel-ai will work, but you can try it for fre. Perhaps too expensive for single time use.

I was hoping, that maybe someone had already worked out something -partially- automatic for this relatively simple problem. It seems not. I checked if I could fiddle around with variables and an extra table of contents at the end of the document but especially the variable did not work (and is also not really clear in the Help file). After all, it is just a simple variation of a single-level table of contents. So I'll continue with the manual method I've been following for years in Word articles.

I like to have references in my books. In the text a number [1] and at the end of the book a separate chapter with all the references to books or websites. References [1] Affinity Publisher, https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/publisher/ It would be great if such a list of references could be made automatically. But as far as I understood this is not (yet) possible. BTW, they are NOT cross-references or footnotes. I read a lot of that on the forum. A complication is that I continuously add chapters in between existing chapters. Which means after that the sequence of numbers is not correct anymore. The clumsy way is when the book is finished check every number in the text give it the right sequence number and link it to the correct reference. No job to look forward to and a high chance of errors Are there smarter ways to do it (more or less) automatically?
