have the same issue, whwn focus merging, prior to the upgrade to 1.9 yesterday was able to ficus stack 35+ images today can't do any, Affinity, seems to hang then shuts down, started with 70 Image stack and gradualy rediced number of images to see if was my laptops memory, but got down to 3 images and still occured.
