superhaschi reacted to lepr in boolean operation "subtract" on text
Here's how to do it with no converting text to curves and no messing with fill mode:
keep as text.afdesign
Make a Compound by holding down option/alt when clicking the Subtract button or picking command Layer > Geometry > Subtract.
Give the Compound a fill colour if it is created without a colour (a bug when lowest operand is text).

superhaschi reacted to Gear maker in boolean operation "subtract" on text
You are right in trying it with the text converted to curves. When you do it you can not use groups though. You will have to expand the groups or ungroup them then select the H W O R L D. The H must be the lowest in the layer panel. If after doing all this it still doesn't look to have worked go into the menu Layers>Fill mode and make sure the Alternate is selected. It should then be working.

We're aware of an issue with font previews in our apps running on Big Sur, it's currently logged with the developers to look into further.

This thread is now locked
Please use Affinity Publisher's built in Auto-update feature to get this new beta or Click here to download the latest beta for macOS
Status: Public Beta
Purpose: General Testing
Requirements: Mac OS 10.9 or above
Hi, we have a preview of build 139 (also called 140, see * below) for you. It is on Auto-update which we would like you to test, but it is also available as a manual download.
As this is a beta it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity where you may be adversely affected by the application failing, including the total loss of any documents.
We hope you enjoy the product, and as always, if you've got any problems installing or running up, please don't hesitate to post in this thread.
Any problems actually using this version please make a new topic in this forum and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Please feel free to leave general suggestions and comments in the Discussion Forum. Many thanks for your continued feedback.

You'll have to download this version of iTunes that still has the App Store built in: https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/itunes12/091-60759-201803029-1F70CB08-3131-11E8-9791-31052B2AA206/iTunes12.6.4.dmg
You'll then be able to purchase Designer and it will be safely waiting in your Purchased app list on your new iPad, when you get it.

superhaschi reacted to John Rostron in Wrapping a label round a bottle or mug in Photo
In a recent post in Questions, @Maxxxworld asked how he could warp an image to apparently wrap it around a bottle. I posted a solution to his problem there, which I expand upon here.
Consider the facing semicircle of the bottle as seen in this diagram:
The visible part of the label extends from -90 degrees (on the left, not shown) to 90 degrees on the right. This will correspond to the width of the original image. This will project onto the final width of the image (the line below). The final width is less than the original width by a factor of pi/2. A bit of trigonometry shows that the sine of the Angle indicated is given by (x-halfwidth)/halfwidth, where halfwidth is both the label and the final image.
Putting this together and re-arranging a bit gives us an Equation:
x=(asin(2*x/w-1)*w/180)*pi/2+w/2
A bottle is typically viewed from above, so that the label has a curve, typically with a dip in the middle. This can easily be simulated using equations, using:
y=y-Const*x*(w-x)/w/w
The Constant determines the depth and direction of the curve. I have used the expression w*(0.5-a) as a scaling factor, where a is a parameter chosen at runtime. This will change the curve from negative (curving down) at the default a=1 to positive at a=0. Inserting this into the equation gives:
y=y+(0.5-a)*x*(w-x)/w
Note that the w in the numerator and denominator cancel out. The value of (0.5-a) determines the curvature as described above.
As an example, here is the Great West Window of Chester Cathedral. I chose this because it has lots of verticals to see how the filter affects it. (It has verticals once I had put it through the Mesh Warp.)
And here is the image after the filter:
Before filtering I cropped it close to the sides of the window and then Rasterized it to remove the invisible sides. I then added space at the top and bottom to allow room for the curvature part to operate. I then followed this by Clip Canvas to remove surplus transparent ends.
The calculations for this filter are complicated by the algorithm that Affinity uses to effect these equations, which I explain in this Tutorial here. I have created a macro that effects the filter, and then uses Clip Canvas. By clicking on the cogwheel, you can alter the degree and direction of curvature.
EDIT: I have discovered that this macro will only perform once (per Affinity Photo session). I add here a version recorded in version 1.8 which does work properly in Photo 1.8:
WrapAround1.8.afmacro
I alos onclude here the original macro, recorded in version 1.7:
WrapAround.afmacro

superhaschi reacted to John Rostron in Curved Text
If you want to re-shape the curve, you can try:
y-(120*a)*(b*sin(360*x/w/c)+(1-b)*cos(360*x/w/c))
Varying the a parameter will change the (vertical) amplitude of the curve.
Varying the b parameter will change the horizontal position of the curve.
Varying the c parameter will change the wavelength of the curve.

superhaschi reacted to Mithferion in Curated list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts
Hi there!
I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list:
They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts. They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake. No attribution required. In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included). Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria). [*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality.
Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique.
[UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of.
[UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts.
[UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link.
[UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration.

This offer has expired and so this thread is locked
Finding the Offer
If you Purchase Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo for Desktop (Mac or Windows, not iPad) OR you already own Affinity on Mac or Windows, then you can also download the free content in the launch offer by updating Affinity to 1.6 and click the "Claim Now" button in the Welcome screen. The offer is only open until November 16th, so hurry up
First Update the software to 1.6.x. Mac software bought from the Mac App Store (MAS) is updated through the MAS update tab.
Windows software can be updated by running the App and pressing Download when prompted about the newer version.
Once you have installed the update, run the Affinity software (Designer or Photo) and the splash screen shows briefly, followed by the Welcome screen that looks like this
Affinity Photo Welcome Screen
Affinity Designer Welcome Screen
If you have the Welcome screen turned off (in Preferences) then you can still access the Welcome screen from the Help menu > "Welcome..." option
IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE SCROLLING OFFER, you will need to give your software firewall clearance in order to see the pages that looks like these attachments. On Windows you may also need to install Internet Explorer 10 or above. Some customers report they have needed to disable VPN networks . If that does not work and you are using the purchased version (not trial or beta) then please add to this thread and we will try to help.
Claiming Your Content
Once you have clicked on the "Claim Now" in the software Welcome screen you will be taken to the Affinity Store (a shopping basket on our website) called "Your Order Summary", from which you can claim your content. Simply make an account by using the "NEW TO AFFINITY?" option on the store as you claim your content. (If you happen to have an account the New to affinity option will tell you anyway, so everyone can use that option) The free content will be added to the Downloads Section of your account and can be seen in future in your Affinity Store Order History.
IMPORTANT
You will ONLY have an Affinity Store account if you have bought the Windows version of Affinity Designer or the Windows version of Affinity Photo or the Affinity Designer Workbook from our site Affinity.Store.
If you bought the Mac version from the Mac App Store you need to create an Affinity Store account to claim the free content. Purchases from the Mac App Store (MAS) are ONLY in Apple's database and Affinity Mac owners DO NOT have an automatic Affinity Store account.
A forum account is not an Affinity Store account, so if that's all you have you will need to create an account too.
A Serif legacy account (used to buy the Plus range) is NOT an affinity store account, the databases are 100%independent.
Installing the Content
Once you have downloaded the free content each zip file has instructions in an included PDF as to how to install it or use it in the appropriate Affinity application. Each one is different. As well as being inside the Zip files, you can also find these Quick start guides in English and German linked to in this resources post
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/50300-installing-free-16-content/ For the Photo Content there is also a video on the Uplift Epic Skies collection here https://vimeo.com/240834026

superhaschi reacted to Busenitz in Affinity Designer SVG import to Silhouette Studio Challenges
Thanks superhaschi!
That is what I am experiencing - misunderstood you. I was thinking you could get the bitmap-filled svg if you rasterized the bitmap again..... (which obviously was not working)
Thank you again for all your help in this!!
The current process works, but would still like to see some improvements, but it may be up to Silhouette. Cutting directly from AD would be AWESOME. :-)

superhaschi reacted to MattP in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.6 - Beta 11)
Firstly, an explanation: So... why did Beta 11 take me such a long time to release? Well, it turns out that the released version of High Sierra showed stability issues with the Metal view mode that the High Sierra Beta didn't. I don't know why and it doesn't seem to have been fixed yet, but as such I could no longer set everyone's default view to the Metal view as they would potentially get a poor experience. We've got our existing OpenGL view there to fall back to, but it's now missing some tweaks and features that the Metal view had been given - so I just spent the last 2 weeks completely rewriting the OpenGL view mode to have parity with the Metal view. So, this new OpenGL view is now in and is set to the default for all users. I will add the legacy OpenGL view mode back in for the next Beta for customers that may suffer very specific GPU-related issues (I can't imagine there will be any, but just in case...). The new OpenGL view should be a little faster at all times and should get rid of some of the long-standing issues that people were seeing - but let me know how it goes!!!
So... on with the next Beta!
Status: Beta Release
Purpose: New features, fixes
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
Mac App Store: Not Submitted
Download: Here
This beta version represents a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.
To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.
Fixes/Improvements:
Completely new OpenGL view (selected by default) Light-UI tweaks Pen Tool tweaked to allow a click on the selected start/end node to force a cusp Tablet input's 'Angle' and 'Tilt' are now mapped more sensibly. 'Tilt' is how far down the pen body is laid towards the device, 'Angle' is the direction formed by the pen on the device. Fix for pressure input with Pencil Tool Fix for importing Text Styles in High Sierra Fix for Colour Picker preview not disappearing correctly in High Sierra PDF export tweaks to avoid rasterising embedded documents where possible and fix colour profile issues Miscellaneous other fixes and tweaks -
superhaschi reacted to Heelix in SVG Export Measurements
Sorry, I think I´ve found the solution. It depends on the settings of the document. 96 x 3.12 is 300 which means that the DPI Settings influence dimension of the SVG files. To get the correct dimensions you need to use 96 DPI in the document. I hope this helps everyone who have the same problems.

superhaschi reacted to MattP in Affinity Photo for ipad - feedback
Hi RHiNO,
Thanks for your comments and feedback - much appreciated! :)
I'll try to quickly answer some of your questions:
Canvas rotation via rotation gesture seemed to happen too frequently and it's quite annoying so we made it only possible in the canvas rotate tool... There's no reason we couldn't enable an option that would let you have it in all tools though... :)
"Pencil input only" sounds like a reasonable request - we're still getting a lot of this stuff nailed down so we can add that one to the list, thanks.
Pixel eraser is also sensible!
Paolo (who makes the DAUB brushes) was in the office with us a couple of weeks ago and he was using 7GB of his custom brushes - so yes, they work great, but we need to add an importer so you can easily get them into the application. This will get done soon.
The gestures would fight with the current ability to paint/move/whatever - but if we added your 'pencil input only' option then there would be no fighting, so yes, we could enable custom gesture recognition to trigger tools or actions...
It wouldn't be totally trivial to add custom scaling for the context bar at the bottom, but it's definitely possible. We're still playing with these things anyway at the moment, so I'd expect this area to evolve over time anyhow...
The navigator will be improved to add 'View points' (customisable view setups that store view centre and zoom level) to help you easily navigate around the document. I'm not totally sure about panning the view around with your finger in the navigator though - perhaps it would work for the pencil, but your finger is often a bit too clumsy to do anything meaningful in that amount of space, I found...
Not too sure about fonts personally, but I was under the impression that you could already install fonts from iCloud Drive? Perhaps not?
Yes, I'd also like to have a persistent tool state between application runs, and we're already doing this for the desktop products, so I'm sure this will also be enabled on iPad
Thanks once again - hope you enjoy using it! I'm sure we'll make it so much better over time :)
Matt
