[Workboo for designer issues]

I am new to affinity designer and i purchased the workbook. When trying to do the exercise for artboards creating one it works but seems to be for an older version of designer that either does not work that way anymore or designer is some how set to the wrong preferences, which i have no altered. When creating an artboard when opening the program it created a large white open space as it should but it does not create a corresponding layer i have checked create artboard before clicking create. I also keep seeing only ios and nexus content under documents when trying to create an artboard from a template. It's kind of frustrating.
