I am also interested in a better solution for this. The current behaviors make it feel like shapes are given first-class support while lines are difficult to work with.

Ah, excuse my mistake. The one marked "all smooth" is smooth along the outside but has one sharp node on the inside (the others have smooth insides). So rotating seems to shift which node is sharp.

I noticed when executing "Expand stroke" on a smooth curve that the resulting vector has one outside node that's sharp on the left while the right is smooth. This seems to happen when rotated certain ways but other rotations result in it being all smooth across the entire outside. Also noticed that if I make the sharp node smooth the node at the top (connected on the left side) jumps down.

Those yellow lines don't appear for me. Based on the comments above it sounds like they don't appear for others either. Feel free to share if you know how to replicate what you're seeing.
