"Absolutely and I'm not suggesting you would, there's nothing wrong with PDF/X-1a either but what do you do when your print job contains transparency or OpenType fonts for example and PDF/X-1a doesn't cut it?" It is not up for me to decide. If a printer wants the PDF/X-1a formant, you comply. You comply because you're trying to make a living. Affinity should offer the PDF/X-1a as does the world's photo editing standard: Photoshop.

The file that I uploaded is the original file. I simply cut out a detail and saved it again in PS as a PDF/X‑1a. It looks perfect when reopened in PS, blurred in AP. As you can see in the post by @Fixx And the file was most definitely created at 300 dpi. Thank you all for your concern, I'm hoping we can find an answer here,

Ciao! When I open a PSD PDF/X‑1a file in Affinity Photo it is blurry. The text shown below is zoomed at 400%. The top text is how it looks when I open the file in PhotoShop. The bottom text is what it looks like when I open it in in AffinityPhoto. What am I doing wrong? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Why is this no problem for the world's standard in photo editing: Photoshop? The software that is used all over the world by professional studios? Used by professionals for decades? You merge down and there is no blurring. Period. Going back and forth about this issue for years with nothing resolved is unfortunate. In the meantime, plenty of unsuspecting users will have their work ruined without realizing what's happening until closer inspection. Why Serif is fine with that is beyond me.

"Whenever I do not want my carefully & precisely placed & sized pixel objects arbitrarily moved, resized, or displaying stair-stepped jagged edges. This is very important if for example I intend to resize the merged object so it blends nicely with some other part of my design." I never ever had that problem when simply merging down a layer in other programs. I have never heard from any of the professionals I have worked with over the decades complaining about how PS handles the simple act of merging layers. However, I HAVE heard complaints here about how Affinity Photo handles merged layers....going back years. Maybe it's time to stop making excuses for a design flaw and get it fixed. Look, I like the program. I use it. But I'm realistic about it.

None of that answers the question: "What would be a case where such blurring when merging down would be desired?" I'd like to know a real-world example. I can't think of any and I first started working with PS in 1996.

Affinity Photo is the only photo editing program that I have ever encountered that requires you to be concerned about having pixels aligned for the simple act of merging down. We're in the year 2021, not 1995. I worked long and hard on a project when just starting out with Affinity...only to realize the blurring upon close inspection. It was HOURS of work ruined. If Affinity is going to insist on keeping this absurd quirk, then there should be a pop-up warning explaining the blur.

Walt, thank you for your help. But that is exactly how the pages look when I double click on the master page in the navigation panel: there's a blue outline around the Master page and a gray highlight on Spread 1. I tried clicking on the icon that @wosven (thank you Wosven) suggested. That brings up the Master pages but then the rest of the spread below disappears. See screenshot. I'm on the latest version of Publisher. I didn't have this problem with the previous version. System: Mac OS Big Sur 11.5 I need to complete a small project and need to resolve this. Anyway thank you both for you quick reply. What should I do next?

I purchased Affinity Designer and Publisher. The purchase includes free templates and textures. I followed the instructions and downloaded them but where were they downloaded to? They're not in my download file where I would expect them to be, they're not on my desktop and a search turns up nothing. I'm on a Mac Big Sur. Can anyone help?
