[I follow the videos but cannot get a masking layer in Photo to work?]

I copy the example of the Owl's eyes on the Affinity Photo tutorial on Vimeo and another by a lady but when I select my brush tool - nothing is ever erased.  There are no indications anything happened. I try duplicate layers.. no result. Perhaps there's a step I am missing?

[Old Photoshop user - loves AFF, but have an export question.]

Even tho' I have been using Photoshop since about V.2 (stopped upgrading at 5) I typically only use about the top 10% of the program to make  JPGs for web pages for products I make.  I use good cameras but do not need full retouching.  I like to finish with a 1024 x 768 image <1meg. 

 

I there a way to fix-a-frame (1024x768) ...then 'Save for Web' as I do in Pshp?   Thanks.

....so far I love playing with all the features - it will just take me a while to get accustomed to the different format.  AFF may be the best app money I have spent in the last couple of years.  A helluva bargain if you don't already have Pshp.
