XNViewMP is a great little pieces of software. It's been recommended on this forum in the past, and I make use of it as well.

Sadly, it is Mac-only software and will not help Windows users and those using Windows Explorer if they expect to see thumbnails.

Not true. The MP stands for Multi-Platform, and it runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Correct. It does not help in File Explorer.

Correct Walt. I work on a Windows 10 laptop and it runs perfectly fine.
The whole purpose for me was to find an alternative to File Explorer when working on Affinity files, so far I’m happy with this result.

A .tif file is never a problem. A .afphoto is a problem. You are using the thumbnail option, where are your .afphoto files?

I'm currently looking for a solution and got somewhat lucky at the first try. The program is called XNview. It's freeware for personal use and they have very acceptable rates for professional use. Download and open. Then in Tools/Settings/General check the box Show All Graphic Formats and lo and behold....it works! I can see all my files now, especially the afphoto files, which where the biggest issue. You can also connect an external editor, in this case Affinity Photo, so you can open them instantly. I didn't run into any issues yet, but the night is still young :)

  3. I haven't use my pc for photo editing since december, so I just wanted to make a screenshot of my affinity photo file folder to show you it works. I always save photo files to edit them when needed.
Now this folder turns up 'empty'(not accessible) I swear I could see and open everything back in december, cause that was the whole reason I was looking for a solution. I suspect it could be an update issue. I keep a very tidy update schedule. I also updated the plugins.
I think that must be the problem, because everything worked just fine a couple of months ago. I'm not a happy camper at the moment and have to look for other solutions to open the photo files thumbs. My raw files, which also are connected to affinity also wont show in explorer. They still do show in Irafanview.

  4. I do use OneDrive and Irfanview Thumbnails is the only software that makes me see the Affinity thumbnails. Open ‘IF Thumbnails’ and on the left side you can pick any folder. You can see all the thumbnails on the right and double clicking opens them enlarged in Irfan View. (You can also very easily scroll through the enlarged thumbnails) Now you can open the file in any external editor. For me that is Affinity.

I agree. I have recently started using OneDrive to ensure all my image and document files are automatically backed up to a cloud server, now I can't see thumbnail images of Affinity files, whether afphoto, afdesign or afpub. If I copy the files to a folder not controlled by OneDrive, I can see the thumbnails again.

I believe this is an issue that Serif need to take up with Microsoft

PS I also note that I have a similar issue with ORF files, which is the Olympus RAW format. Even though the Microsoft website says this format is supported by OneDrive, it does not work. Again , it is fine in a folder outside of OneDrive. So Affinity files are not alone in this issue.

PPS I also took others advice and downloaded XnView in the hope that this would resolve the issue in the meantime but , again, OneDrive proved to be the stumbling block. As much as I like Windows 10, Microsoft are not very pro-active when it comes to supporting non-native products. Both Olympus and Serif are substantial companies with large user bases so it is rather frustrating to be the victim of such oversight.

Unfortunately not. Affinity should contact Microsoft and add there extension to OneDrive.

First let me wish everyone a great 2021

I couldn’t solve this problem, but I did find a piece of software that sort of circumvents the issue. It’s called ‘Irfanview’. Very basic but quite effective. This lets you see the thumbnails and you can enlarge them. Also you can open files with an external program (in this case Affinity photo) Actually, you can put in three external editors to open your files with. Until Serif and Microsoft figured this one out I’m using this as somewhat of a ‘solution’.

    you can download it here
