mcastrobrasil reacted to KilianBr in alternatives to Lightroom,
Hi folks,
3 years ago I started using Affinity Photo because I think Adobe's license model is just plain nasty and outrageous, especially if you only really need a few of the programs. Since then I am very happy with Davinci resolve and the Affinity suit, and miss only a few features of the Adobe CC programs, besides the fast and very intuitive motiongraphics in Aftereffects I only miss the Ligthroom presets, in the beginning it didn't really bother me, but the more I specialize in photography and the more my colleagues throw Ligthroom presets around permanently, the more I miss using an intuitive batch editor that can read the LR XMPs, achieve similar results quickly, and generally integrate a few Quality of life things adobe users may just gotten used to.
if I'm fundamentally in the wrong place, let me know, but I'd love a Serif alternative for the few features that still justify ligthroom.

mcastrobrasil reacted to KC Honie in Desperately seeking Lightroom replacement
I chose to go with C1 because IMHO the raw engine is much better than Adobe's and I prefer AP to PS. But to your point I pay a premium for using C1 instead of LR.
As primarily a photographer, I am keenly aware of the library features of both LR and C1. An application such as PS or AP is not useful for a high volume photographer, you have to have the basic DAM functionality of LR or C1 (et al). I think most photographers are also very much aware of this.
I am not sure why Serif has not created "Affinity Develop" to compete with the other RAW developers out there (the RAW developer functionality is already present in AP, write a DAM already!!!). But that in my opinion is the huge factor in photographers not switching to Affinity apps.
If C1 keeps raising prices like that are then I might head back to Adobe... Then PS would also replace AP on my machine.
Edit:
As an aside, I don't think Serif has any intention of releasing a LR/C1 competitor. It is a glaring hole in their lineup and should have been released concurrent with Affinity Photo. There is some strategic reason for not competing heads up with Adobe that we are not seeing. Very unfortunate...

mcastrobrasil reacted to stuartbarry in RAW image processing and DAM
I know that DAM has been discussed forever, but I think that AF2 is close to being able to provide a solution alongside NeoFinder.
I can now process RAW images and do almost all my work non-destructively, saving the file as a linked RAW file. This creates 2 files: an afphoto file and an XMP sidecar file. Whereas I can re-open the afphoto file and continue working from where I left off, the metadata is not copied from the original RAW file and the thumbnail is too small, even though it does reflect the current view.
I asked NeoFinder about this and they replied as follows:
NeoFinder uses the QuickLook plugins supplied by Affinity to grab the thumbnails of these formats. It seems they only provide a small version of this. While NeoFinder is able to add its own metadata, using the industry standard Adobe XMP sidecar mechanism, the handling of that metadata inside of the Affinity products is still inconsequential, and they don't offer an API to access their own embedded metadata yet. It seems that if AF2 could take this one step forward we'd have a realistic replacement for Lightroom. What are the chances?

mcastrobrasil reacted to coyo in "Sculpt" Tool needs a more descriptive name
I was incredibly excited to see that Affinity Designer had a "sculpt" feature for lines as the line sculpting workflow is something I love in Blender's Grease Pencil Tool and have wanted something similar in a regular vector program. For reference, in my experience line "sculpting" refers to the ability to toggle between a set of subtools to reshape a line and perform other operations such as changing line width on the fly using a tool that feels more like a brush than a cursor selecting individual nodes.
I was saddened to discover that the Affinity Designer "sculpt" feature appears to have nothing to do with actually "sculpting" a line. It simply enables one to extend an existing curve object.
There's nothing wrong with the feature itself. It's just that the name is incredibly non-descriptive for its actual function. Calling it something like "Extend" would be much more clear.
I will continue to hope that someday a true line sculpting tool will be added to AD (maybe there is one and I just haven't found it yet).

Is it feasible that you will develop an Adobe Lightroom competitor?
Thanks,
