Finally. So pleased this has come and it is part of the 1.X version series. Looking forward to trying it out
So am I! While I haven't yet tested it to comment on its implementation (seems the connection to the server is tenuous)—I'll be honest—I expected this to be held back until a new paid version.

Affinity's adoration—and perhaps stubbornness—to be different (and the disaster that is Designer) is the reason I can't bring myself to buy Photo. I just don't have faith that it can do the job I need it to, in a way that's intuitive. Different for the sake of different is not inherently better. Many UX standards have been developed across the software industry over the decades, I don't see why Affinity needs to challenge them as if everyone's been doing it wrong.
I want to support the little guy, I really do but not at the cost of me being hamstrung by the software which is costing me and the client more time (or the software just can't do the job at all).

Its been countless times that selecting by same fill color would just work wonders for me.
Heres something that could be quite useful sometimes too - I am not sure if it is implemented, I cant find anything like this. Inverse OBJECT selection. Say you are selecting few elements and then by using inverse selection you could quickly select all the elements/objects other then you just selected. What do you think?I think we all agree but at this point we're talking to the void. Let's wait and see what happens whenever they decide to release an update with a worthwhile selections feature set.

It's important that we don't all get false hope with this. It could still be several years before we see anything with the current track record.

Geez. So Matt writes that select same us the next feature he's going to work on, writing that today, and that initially it will work like Illy with it to be extended in the future and you feel the need to be a glass half full type of person?
Any wonder why Serif stopped responding much to requests? 'Cause if this is the type of response, I would too.
I don’t blame anyone here being sceptical/pessimistic about the delivery of this. I’m excited AF (as it’ll make the software I paid for useful) but I’ll be damned if I’m counting my chickens until it goes live.

I can’t quite believe it. It is also kind of funny that it comes in a different thread to the one that’s been going for years and years
I agree, it looks spiteful to me 😂
Regardless, it’s great news and I’ll be ecstatic if this a 2020 and 1.x feature.

No, it is to "like" the original post. That is one of the greatest benefits of having the ratings feature, but only if people actually use it.
I had a quick look through the forum, ordering posts by most views and checking the "likes" on the original post. This request has the most votes (54) yet it doesn't have the most views. Seems like people are using it and still our voice isn't being heard/appreciated. The only post that comes even close to this thread is for Autotrace (47 votes) and that was also created in 2014.
Having been involved in running a forum for a popular application for several years, I can tell you the number of comments says more than the votes. Comments and discussion show passion, votes can be cast and forgotten.

They are probably so fed up with the thread that they don't even want to think about it.
Yes! That would fix the shortcoming of the software. Listen to this person!

REJOICE! 1.8.1 finally fixes this issue, boys and girls!
...
Just kidding. As you were.

Switched to Affinity Designer after a decade of Illustrator and it took me less than an hour before my troubleshooting search found this thread. I'm completely stuck without "select same" functionality... will ask for a refund given how unresponsive Serif seems to be for such a critical feature request.
Pop! (this is the sound of my initial enthusiasm for Affinity Designer disappearing)
Yep, sadly it doesn’t take long before this becomes an insurmountable issue. It’s fundamental to vector illustration.

@jamesholden Sorry, my mistake. You're right, it's a perpetual license but you only get one year's of updates for the initial purchase. I'll update my post to reflect that omission!
-
@DomD Sketch (Mac) is a capable alternative if you're focused on UI work which is a perpetual license and a year's worth of updates. After that you pay a lesser fee to continue to receive updates. Aseprite is an amazing Pixel Art editor with a perpetual license and currently infinite free updates. Both of those are quite specialised though and not the generalist tool that Photoshop is or Designer is trying to be. As it is, Designer is sadly not fit for purpose when it comes to heavy lifting -- at least for my use case.
If you already have a CC license I'd stick with that, at least for the foreseeable future. It'd be wrong to assume Affinity are actually working on this, at least not for the version we've paid for.

In case you're new enough here not to know, the Serif staff very seldom participate in discussions about feature requests. They read and take note of the discussions, but seldom comment, as a matter of policy.
Thanks, but I'm not new. I've been following the thread for years so I'm well aware of how Serif staff treat us.

We sure have a sweet chorus going in this echo chamber!

I think part of the problem here is that it is such a basic feature that you have many many customers who probably would still be potential customers had they known AD doesn't have it.
It's like having a word processor without a find tool, ie unconscionable in 2019.
Too right, I wouldn't have bought Designer if I knew it didn't have this feature. Now I recognise that's mostly on me because like you said, who would've thought in 2019 a professional design application wouldn't have a 'select same...' feature. Nonetheless, I'm not particularly keen on paying for a new version when I haven't got any value out of the version I bought due to a deal-breaking feature omission.

'Translating PDF: $/£/€X.00 per hour'...
I agree that people should charge for their time but this proposal is flawed in this case. Take the following situation:
Two designers (of equal skill) quote for a job requiring manipulation of a vector file. One uses Affinity Designer, the other Adobe Illustrator. Who do you think quotes for fewer hours?
It's absurd to suggest that you charge the client more money because you choose to use under-cooked software. That's not the client's fault! Any sane client would call you out and go elsewhere, somewhere—that likely uses Illustrator—making trivial work of an existing vector file.

Crikey, what a story.
I'm in the same boat as you; I desperately want Serif to take a chunk of Adobe's pie but without a core features like this I cannot in good faith recommend Designer nor is it fit for my purpose. That's a shame because it has a lot going for it and has potential to be massive. Instead, in its current state it's gathering dust in my Applications folder.
Anyway, we digress and should keep it on topic.

If I had known AD lacked a core feature like this (and then it be ignored for 5 years) I wouldn't have bought it; AD is virtually unusable to me in this state. To be completely fair though, that's on me, I shouldn't have assumed what appeared to be a "serious Illustrator contender" would have a staple feature like this. It's like if your favourite code editor didn't have a Find & Replace feature. Sure, you can use it but inevitably you're in for a world of pain that just isn't worth suffering through for the other good features.

I can only hope that now, when 1.7 was released, this little, tiny and very important feature is finally going to get on the feature list for the next release, along with mesh/warp/envelope distort. These two would finally make Designer my only vector tool.
Sorry, man, but you're having a laugh if you think this'll make it into 1.8. It's not even on the roadmap and like @MEB said above it's not likely to be in a 1.x version which places it eons away (still).

Maybe the newly released CorelDRAW is the (temporary or permanent) answer to our missing feature woes.

As someone who creates generative designs with 1000s of objects, it's nice to know that this feature will finally make an appearance at some stage, as without it I'm simply unable to use AD.
Don't hold your breath, it could be another 4 years at the current rate.

Some great points there, @furtonb, I agree with much of what you said, particulary your last sentence.
For me, Affinity Designer is a Lamborghini without wheels: It's incredibly capable and sexy but due to lacking something so integral it stays parked in the garage gathering dust.

Flood Fill Selection

This needs to be a thing in Designer too. I am constantly using the cmd/alt-del shortcut to fill selections. I don't see any options for it, even in the pixel persona. I don't want to be constantly fiddling with the tolerance slider.
