Catherine M Evans reacted to CCW in Affinity Publisher crashing within seconds of opening files
    Good evening,
I was last using Affinity Publisher on Thursday evening. It was working fine.
Today I have launched the software and every time I open a file it crashes back to the Windows home screen.
I have tried re-installing it, reverting to an older version (these all failed to open the file because the file contains features in a newer version), and I have tried the performance settings. I've attached the most recent 'report' file, which I've no idea how to open or decipher, but hopefully someone here can!
    Any help gratefully received.
    Kind regards,
    Craig

Very much needed, I hope the developers see this and realise the need is out here!

This can't be defined obviously, but if you work in graphic design (or make a product targeted for graphic designers) some features are common sense. Beacuse otherwise why not restrict Bold and Italics modifiers just to Publisher? Are they "basic"?
Yeah, I get it but read my paragraph above. Let's revert this argument - take paint brush in Photo for example. It makes perfect sense in context of this app, not so much in Publisher.  But if you could do all sorts of edits to bitmap in Publisher, excluding paint brush, what would you say?
As side note - I think that separating Publisher and Designer, while it has it's benefits, isn't best startegy - due to weird compromises we talk right now.

Text>Capitalization is by nature a quick fix tool, usually to make a few sentences of caps text to lowercase. I usually copypaste text to Mail or Word to change capitalization and having to use Publisher roundtrip to do to same does not help any. So this handy tool should be available in Designer too direct. The menu position is identical to Publisher and there is plenty a room for it in submenu.

Yeah, some choices does'nt make much sense in Affinity. This is one of such examples.
All three apps allow you to work with text, so it's perfectly logical to include such basic feature in all of them, but... restricting features to one product just for sake of difference?

Yes in Publisher it works great. My post was a suggestion to implement that feature in all the 3 softwares. Designer needs that to be implemented too.

In Publisher it is OK but not so in Designer.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Selecting a shape should highlight the respective color in the swatches panel

That's good of you ask, thank you - it seems to be fine now. It only happened a few times after installing 10, and it hasn't happened since then.
    Thanks!

    @R C-R
Dear RCR, no, it isn't logical from a programing standpoint. Its bulls**t! 🤮 From any standpoint.
Imagine you are a print designer, you have every day a lot of different documents to design and every time you briefly change the line spacing or switch for a moment between italic and roman, you don't know which paragraph format you have changed ??? What can you do? Run back to Adobe? Howling? Or you eat your keyboard bevor and run anyway? 🤪

Same thing if I simply change the size of the brush. The best thing would be like in Photoshop: right-click to change the size of the brush, and it is still highlighted in the brushes panel. :)

    Hi everyone,

I have faced this issue especially when painting in Affinity Designer. If i am using multiple brushes in a single painting i cannot select them by sampling them from the paint on the canvas. Lets say if i have utilized 7 brushes in my painting, then there must be a way for me to select any of them by sampling them. This mechanism is actually available in the mypaint software that i have used a lot. In order to select a brush from a painting in my paint, you move the cursor over the brush stroke and press the 'w' key to sample and then select the brush[along with its settings] without selecting and remembering the brush from the brush panel. Here is a short video demonstrating this feature as i do many brush strokes and select those by sampling them. A similar feature should also be available in affinity designer and photo,as if we are using close to a lets say 25 brushes in a painting,do we need to remember each of them?. This feature will boost our productivity.

This is a problem for finding the brush you are using. If you go somewhere else in the brushes panel, unless you remember both the category and the brush, you have trouble finding it again. Yes, you can see the brush names, but you have to mouse over all of them one at a time to locate a name. And you would have to do that for every category. Not a good solution. Breadcrumbs is the best solution.

This is a known bug with the Windows version which we have logged for our developers to fix in an upcoming version :)

That only tells you which tool you are using (e.g. the Paint Brush Tool). It doesn't tell you anything about the brush stroke. ;)

When I use a brush I know which one I'm using because it's highlighted.

If I then use a selection tool - L and come back to the brush tool - B, the brush is no longer highlighted, now it's no longer identifiable. What brush am I using? How can I know?

Is there a way to know what brush is currently being used?

    Hi everyone here,
the problems seem to be solved. All my desktop versions from the Affinity programs now are running in version 1.10. I deinstalled first the old version, then I installed the new version again. The programs started and I could work fine with it. Thanks to Callum from Affinity for his help!
    Best Regards

Hi. Version 1.10 of Designer will not open. It crashes as soon as the splash screen appears. I've had to reinstall 1.9.2.1035. I'm using Windows 10 (build 19042) with a Ryzen 7 1700, 16gb RAM and an old GeForce 950.
Publisher and Photo have been working fine. No problems at all there.
    Thanks.

    Hi Bamboli,

I'm a new user (and big time Novice)  and have had the same issue with the 10.1 update. I wound up, uninstalling 10.1 and reinstalling 1.92. This allowed me to get back into my Designer as if nothing had happened. The link for the affinity page is https://store.serif.com/en-us/update/windows/designer/1/
I originally purchased from the Affinity site, so I was able to uninstall using the Account/downloads page and doing "uninstall", then reinstalling the older version. it worked immediately and Designer opened right up.
There were some instructions in another part of the thread regarding error files/event logs that were far too advanced for myself as a novice to attempt. But this seems to have worked out just fine. ( the reinstall )
I'm sure there will be a remedy/patch forthcoming from the good folks at Serif very soon. I can imagine that they are "burning the midnight oil" tonight trying to solve this issue. So I'm happy to wait and use the "old" version.
    Hope this helps.
    Matt

Yes, I used the recommended format and all went well. And yes, I had some images in the book. But the images were charts and graphs, not stylish artwork or photo-like images.

I am using Affinity Publisher to create my first print-on-demand book for submission to Amazon KDP. Anyone happen to know which of the PDF Presets to use?  Perhaps the "press ready" one? Thanks.
