I love the colours.
The few complementary highlights add very much to the composition I think. The mood is strong and goes well with the red colours.
I like the way you use texture. Looking forward to more postings.

My name is Benjamin, and I just started to use the marvelous piece of software by Serif today (even though AD is a world for itself). Never did serious stuff in Photoshop, so it's kind of a double debut. I started arts 2 years ago and I still suck, so I'd love some critique. If anyone is interested, I went with pretty much the logo I had in the first place :P ...only with the bird 'put down' and a negative space feather in the 'O' (along with some tweaks to Ks).
 
A long way round to get to where it is, I had an attachment to the bird which was not helpful and it had to go one way or another.
Happy with the result, now I can just use the one logo rather than a mix of different silly arrangements.
 
Now on with proper work.

Affinity Designer is a great tool for developing a natural media looking style while retaining vector edit-ability.
 
This was done with vectors and custom intensity brushes similar to those in sets I have posted in the past.
The vector structure and sketch (done with the great sketching but now defunct art app TabletDraw) can be seen here as well:

I do get you point about the inverted L, but it messes the feather up when the correct way, I tried several ways to make it work (I went feather mad yesterday, 12 different variations) I actually did have a pen tip one end in a first round, but it looked terrible when used landscape.

It depends what you want to communicate. 
I don't feel the one to the left communicate anything. The second one is stronger and the feather theme is clear.
The third one shows the feather too, and I think the circle symbolise an oldfashioned pen tip. 
 
The name and the mirrored L isn't appealing I think. But that is maybe the associations they give my in my language.;)

Hello everybody, how is it going? :)

 

Long time with no updates on this topic. Looks like I totally gave up isn't it?… nope!, I'm still working hard on it, but -as always- it’s impossible to foresee the amount of work that takes to create several character design tutorials until you get your hands on the thing.

 

So... here is a list of updates that sums up (pretty much) what’s been going on with the AD character design project the last couple of months:

 

1. The project has an official name: Frankentoon (already registered wohoo!)

2. I have a website mockup, ready to be translated to HTML5 by a fellow programmer. The domain is already bought and a plain landing page is up: www.frankentoon.com 

3. I have 4 full tutorials already written and ready to be published.

4. Still haven’t figured out the format of the premium products... but the website will be launched as a free tutorials platform.  

5. I’m working on a secret vector pack for our first time visitors... ohh mystery :o  (the pack will be free of course)

6. I’m already promoting the name Frankentoon in social media, you can find us at instragram and twitter as @frankentoon (lots of cool cartoon characters made with AD have been already added)

 

Probably I forgot something, but those are the most important points in the roadmap.

 

Website is planned to be up and running by the 1st of may (fingers crossed). By now I have to change the premium iOS ibook strategy entirely, because of the upcoming Windows release.  This cross platform thing opens up new possibilities so I want to have the right product for both windows and mac users.

 

I think this is all for now... just one more thing :)  attached you’ll find some instagram screenshots of the official Frankentoon account, follow it if you please (please, please! :D), some of those characters have their tutorials written already :o

 

If you have questions or suggestions they are always more than welcome. I want to know all of your suggestions and opinions (good or bad!)

I was experimenting with gradient maps and recoloring. A sort of bland photo of a leafless tree picked up some character, I think.
