Twolane got a reaction from v_kyr in A few Paper Effect Assets
Thanks for these! I'm using some already.
I have been using v1, and now, v2, of the Affinity products for slightly over two years with great success. I would not call myself a power user by any stretch. I do covers and POD print books. I experiment with assets such as these that I have discovered on this forum.
I have just started to use Designer. I'm experimenting with it by tracing over some photos I took on my phone. My results to date aren't great, but it's not because of software limitations. It is because of my limited abilities. I expect improvement over time with practice.
Without this forum (and youtube videos as well), I would still be off wandering in the desert somewhere. (And I've done that, too, although not with graphics software.)
So thanks again, v_kyr, and thanks, Affinity Serif, as always.
  2. Thanks

Here are a few Paper Effects as vector assets (...since some new forum user recently asked me for such things).

    The assets file:

paper-effects.afassets A paper effects samples file:
    paper-effect-samples.afdesign
And two curled paper sample files:

    curled_paper_template.afdesign curled_paper_sample.afdesign
As mostly all freely reusable, have a nice time!

I can't comment on color print books, since I'm a novelist and do only POD and ebook b&w interiors, but...
Amazon will get you out to individuals. Do not select expanded distribution. Bookstores, libraries, etc. abhor Amazon, and will not order copies through them.
Ingram Spark distributes POD primarily to bookstores, libraries, etc. Do not select expanded distribution.

I use Amazon and Ingram Spark for my POD books. Ingram Spark gets me to distributors. Amazon is for direct sales to individuals. My books are are text-only, with a soft cover. However, you might explore the Ingram Spark and Amazon sites to determine if they meet your requirements. They will also do hardcovers, I believe. Their printing costs are much lower than going to a local printer. I can't comment on the costs of printing and shipping for hard covers. I only order one from each of Amazon and Ingram Spark to inspect the quality. Speaking of which, Publisher, with proper input, will produce a product that rivals that of the Big 5.
Of course, you will need Publisher to produce a pdf file for the interior (at least, that's what I use). I use Photo for the covers, although I am starting to use Publisher for some of the covers in my latest publications. Publisher does not produce an .epub product.
Good luck, and keep on writing.
Edited to add that you might consider avoiding the vanity presses like the plague. From what I have read, you will end up with a garage full of books that you can't give away.

Twolane got a reaction from Patrick Connor in Why can't Win11's Task Manager kill these programs?
Interesting. I uninstalled all three 2.04 msix installs, and reinstalled them. It now appears as though they quit clean. Task Manager is showing them doing such.
The 2.04 msix files were installed over Dan's Patrick's 2.03 early update files. Not sure if that had anything to do with the quitting and "hanging on" Task Manager problems or not.
In any event, don't be shy about uninstalling and re-installing. All of my many brushes, assets, &c. were picked up by the new installs unscathed.
What a great trio of programs. They just keep getting better and better.

To the best of my knowledge, the only downloaded content I've ever used are purchased fonts. However, I will be happy to report any further occurrences of this.
Besides this issue, I couldn't be happier with Publisher. I split my time between Indesign (work-related=30%) and Publisher (everything else=70%) and am always impressed with what your team has created. Thank you.

I don't want to turn this into another complaining thread. I'm a happy user of Affinity all the way round. I was working on yet another POD book in Publisher when the difficulty popped up. The POD book is done and good to go on Ingram Spark and Amazon, regardless of whether it's a bug or a feature.
Thank you Affinity for your continued efforts with v2.

99 bucks for, uhh ... counts on fingers ... SEVEN! count 'em, 7 bits of software. I haven't used an Apple product since the Apple /// and the Lisa (heh. have I mentioned that before?) but I happily laid out the cash. Counts on fingers again ... THREE! count'em, 3 bits of software that I will use. That's like ... counts some more, does dividing by 3 fingers, sums something, err, maybe not ... 33 bucks a crack. Ya. That's it. I paid 33 bucks for three bits of software. When I bought v1 two years ago, I think I paid 27 bucks each. Now someone is pissed because they're paying 6 bucks more. Whiners gonna whine, I guess.
Is my math wrong? Did I count wrong? Did I miss a finger somewhere? Am I missing a finger?
So, basically, v2 is great value for money, notwithstanding two years of inflation and a 6 buck increase in price per unit.
If I might be so bold to suggest to the whiners and shiners: You might want to pick up the latest product at the sale price before December 14, because if you don't, we will all be subjected to a completely new and not unheard round of whining and shining.
    That's all, folks.

It looks to me like you have your Nik installed in Program Files\Google\Nik collection. Is there a reason they aren't in the 2.0/Plugins directory? When I click on Open Default Folder in Explorer, it takes me right to my 2.0/Plugins folder, where Gmic and Nik Collection reside. When I click on the Nik Collection directory, all of the Nik plugin folders are there, including Uninstall Nik Collection.exe.
I have no such Program Files\Google\Nik collection showing on my Photoshop Plugins page under Plugin Search Folders.
My only directory showing under C:\Program Files\Google is Chrome, and of course that doesn't show up on the Photoshop Plugins page.

v1 users? You speak for all of us? I dunno, but that car I bought is getting kind of tired after a couple of years. Mebbe I should go ask the dealership if I can get a replacement for nada. Come to think of it, so is my toaster. It too - oh, never mind. Oh, wait. I know. I'll go to the manufacturer. They'll fix me up with something for nothing for sure.

In v2, changing square count increases or decreases the number of vertical lines.
Not a problem. I was looking for a simple way to build a template for horizontal lines that could be easily changed. I'll try something else.
Edited to add that I found the formula for horizontal stripes: osci(c/w,ry*c/w)

Yeah, no. As in, no thanks. Those software lists will never convince anyone to convert, thank you very much. (Well, anyone other than the die-hard anti-Win.) I recall "trying Linux" a number of years ago. From what I can tell today, nothing much has changed, except the number of "versions" one can choose from running under this, that, and/or the other thing. That's helpful right there. Not.
A blank screen urging one to execute esoteric command lines from somewhere or other is unlikely to convince anyone otherwise, other than the above-mentioned users.
But perhaps I over-simplify. Pardon my ignorance.

With regard to basic changes to Brushes, on Page 2 where you note the "barbell": In Windows, if you go to Edit / Preferences / Assistant / Brush tool sharing, Smart sharing between tools will ensure you get your brushes loaded into all three tools when you import them into Photo or Designer. Ditto for Assets. You won't have to import them into each of the products.
The barbell - or more likely chain link - indicates the brushes are available in all products, when supported.
I have copies of all of my assets, brushes, swatches, etc. After I discovered this import feature, I deleted and reloaded all of the items that had no barbell. I now have them in Photo and Designer. It's a great feature if one wants to ensure compatibility between the products for your work. I quite like the feature.
Oh, and you can also drag and drop items to arrange them alphabetically, in case no one noticed.

Obvi you have to make those decisions for yourself and your workflow.
I was smart enough to buy Affinityx3 two years ago for a nice discount, once I leaned of their products. I never envisioned myself using Publisher, but I added it into the mix anyway. Lo and behold, I found a use for it. Publisher and Photo together have paid untold dividends. Last month I laid out 99 bucks for v2 of the trinity of trinities and haven't been disappointed, even though I own no Apple products.
I don't consider myself a "power user", but the software has quite nicely tied itself into my writing business with e-book and print covers, and POD books. Did I ever have a wisp of an idea that would be so two years ago? No. But Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Serif. I'm quite happy with your software and how it suits my business model.

Creating a version for Linux is akin to creating one for Android. No one is willing to pay the price for anything useful. 10 bucks for an Android app won't pay to keep the electricity on anywhere in the world. Neither will a few Linux users.
There's a thread here somewhere about Linux (still not) running on Bottles (or anything else Linux, for that matter.)
