  1. Looks like you're pretty close to me. That's nice work.
  2. kirkt...Thanks for the explanation of "RPP". It is something I had never seen before. The others I am familiar with.
  3. What is soooo frustrating to me, as someone who looks to this forum for information and understanding of unfamiliar concepts, techniques and programs, is when posters use single letter abbreviations assuming everyone already knows what they mean, instead of spelling out the words, at least once, so those who don't know what RPP is, for example, might learn something from the post.
  4. mac_heibu, you clearly have a much deeper understanding of print requirements and color profiles than I do. The method I use works for my needs. I did not choose the CMYK profile by accident. I don't use four color black, spot colors or pantone colors. I keep everything as simple as possible and have not had a problem so far. Fortunately I am aware that there are more countries in the world than the US. Now that I know about the Convert to Profile command I will keep it in mind should I ever need to send something internationally.
  5. mac_heibu, I appreciate the response, and I'm sure it's me, but I still don't understand what you are saying. When I convert an image from RGB to CMYK using the drop down menu and then save the file, the color profile U.S. Web Coated(SWOPv2) is saved with the file, which is what I think Magnus is referring to, so I don't understand how this is a problem.
  6. Peterkoasa or mac_heibu...Could either of you be more clear on why using the drop down menu to select CMYK is not a good idea. I have clients that require all files be CMYK and I routinely convert from RGB when needed, using the drop down menu in photoshop. I have never had a problem and I can see immediately if there is a significant color shift that needs addressing. I am far from an expert on this and use the drop down because I didn't know there was a better way or a way that should be used.
  7. You say the colors in the printed image are "washed out". Are the colors in the printed image wrong or are they too light? That is two different issues it seems to me but I am no expert on printing.
  8. Nick, like they say, "It ain't braggin' if it's true". That van illustration is a very impressive piece of work. And seeing your process in progress makes your posts here much clearer. I have never seen the pencil tool used that way before and I will never look it the same way again. I don't know if CS6 can function that way but I am going to give it a try. This is exactly why I hope Affinity will develop/pursue support of Astute Graphics plugins or add this kind of functionality to Designer. I think they will get there.
  9. Hello Mmillecamps, I would suggest you buy both Designer and Photo if your budget allows. You will find as you learn more about working with scanned art that there are things you can do in Photo that would be easier and faster than in Designer and things you can do in Designer that are better suited to that program. And you can jump back and forth between the 2 applications so easily while working on the same file. Together they make a very good pair for creating the kind of illustration you describe.
  10. I have used the Apple Magic Mouse since buying my 27" iMac 7 years ago. I have never had any of the problems other users mention. I don't mind the shape and I love the way it scrolls. I don't use a mouse to draw with. I have used other devices, several by logitech and can't say I have any complaints with them. I just don't really like scroll wheels and I never seem to use the extra buttons, though I suppose that is something you have to force into your workflow until you don't think about it any more. I use rechargeable batteries and keep a fresh set ready to change out as needed. The only issue I have had, and this is recent, is the mouse drops the wi-fi connection from time to time. I have read this is due to a slight design flaw not holding the batteries securely in place. In the end I think you should think about how you work, what kind of work you use a mouse for and what features are important to you. Even then you may end up trying 2 or 3 until you find the one you like. Then they will probably discontinue it! :)
  11. Illustrator breaks the text into random chunks or individual characters frequently when I open PDF files sent to me by clients. So this is clearly not an Affinity issue.
  12. Couldn't agree more. "Poor quality export" is a common complaint and the reason more often than not is the default setting for resampling.
  13. I believe he's is placing one 8.5 in w x 5.5 in h document in the top half of and 8.5 in w x 11 in h document and a second 8.5 in x 5.5 in document in the bottom half. The part about what gets rasterized I can't speak to.
  14. Might come in handy. Thanks Will!
  15. Lorigan, support for plugins in Affinity Photo is early in it's development and should improve over time. There are a number of threads on plugins here that may give you more info but the short answer is right now some plugins work and some do not.
  16. It sounds like you are using the words "image" and "photo" to mean two different things and I am not sure what you are referring to when you use the word "image". A photo is often referred to as an image but I think you may be using it to mean a graphic object or shape used in a design. Either way a vector brush doesn't remove any thing from either a photo or a vector design shape or object. All photos, wether public domain or not, are taken with a digital camera and if you are wanting to remove something from a photo like a person, sign, telephone wires or some other part of the photo, then you would use tools like the clone stamp or inpainting brush in Affinity Photo. There are some tutorials on how to do this found on the tutorials page of this forum. I hope this helps and sorry if I'm not understanding you correctly.
  17. papalar, I don't know enough to offer a solution to you but I am very interested in your method for coloring greyscale art for a different kind of project. I looked at your posted file but I can't figure out how you applied the color to the channels you made. Could you possibly explain further? Perhaps someone would then have a solution you can use in Affinity.
  18. jjeff, why do you need to change the pdf file format to .ai? Illustrator opens .pdf files.
  19. Affinity Jack, thanks for another great tutorial. I always enjoy them even though I don't speak or understand German. You do a good job of getting your ideas and techniques across.
  20. What happened was Your finder was launched showing you your photoshop plugins folder. I don't know what version of photoshop you have. I have CS6 and your files look a little different than mine. If Remask is the only plugin you have select it by clicking on it once and then click OK to add it to the list in Affinity preferences. If you have other plugins they will be in the " Topaz Plugins" folder shown in the right side of your screen shot or in the folder called Plugins. You have click add and manually select each plugin you have one at a time to add them to the list in Affinity preferences. It is not an automatic, one click and your done type of thing. You then have to click the add button under the Plugin Support folders window and select your hard rive and then click Ok. Sorry if my directions are not the best. This is close to the limit of my expertise. If you check other threads about this topic you should find perhaps better instructions. That is how I was able to get mine to show in the Filters menu. I hope this helps.
  21. You have not linked Affinity Photo to your plugins. Your preferences should look like the attached screen shot. Go to Affinity Help under Filters and Effects>Using Plugins. Follow the directions to manually link your plugins to Affinity Photo under the "To enable untested or potentially unsupported plugins". Ask questions here if you run into trouble.
  22. Can you post a screen shot of your Affinity preferences panel for Photoshop Plugins? Someone should be able to tell you if you have something set up incorrectly. That is usually the cause for them not showing in the filters list. Keep in mind that even once you get them to show in the list, not all of the Topaz plugins currently work with Affinity. Also keep in mind that some of the Topaz plugins can be used as stand alone applications.
