Hitting [Enter] doesn't seem to work for me either. I assume there is a difference between having the mouse on the image (shows the brush size), and having it elsewhere (shows the typical arrow-shape). Neither scenario makes me able to start using [ and ] to adjust the brush size.

This appears to be happening again in version 1.3.4 from the App Store. To duplicate: Layer --> New Layer Then, either Layer --> Delete, or click the garbage can. The layer will remain. In order to actually delete the layer, either use Edit --> Undo until it's gone, or drag the layer into the garbage can (yes, this works!!!).
