wls got a reaction from CleverFox2 in Affinity Canvas Render Problem when Masking and Hovering Cursor Over Pixels
@CleverFox2 -- I noted the same thing moments after posting.  So I reposted it (same problem, perhaps with forum?)  I sent a copy to SMASH.

Know how like every filter in Affinity does this amazing live preview thing where you see what you're going to get before you commit to it.  > LOVE THAT <
Well, I was attempting to export an image ...in this case it was a GIF with a reduced color palette...
What I was hoping to see, as I was trying to find the right size / quality-diminishing balance, was a preview of the export along with the estimated size.  How cool would that be!
Unfortunately, I had to export the file and then go see on the file system if what I got was usable.  ...ick

Yes, it does. From that Help topic:

    And a bit further down:

It would be nice if drag/drop of an image were also mentioned; it's a form of Place.

Check the Layers panel. In step 2 you will have ended up with an (Image) layer rather than a (Pixel) layer. Image layers are a kind of indivisible vector object, and if you want to work with the pixels you need to Rasterize that layer, which will make it a (Pixel) layer.
    You can:
right click on it in the Layers panel and choose Rasterize..., or right click on the image itself and choose Rasterize..., or use the menu, Layer > Rasterize...

wls got a reaction from Alfred in Quick inquiry, how do you paint a layer mask?
    FOUND THE SOLUTION
I'm running into this very problem on v1.8.3 right this moment.  I opened a JPG, then dragged another on top of it, and Option-clicked the mask Layer Button, and expanded the layer to select just the mask.
Using the D (default colors), X to exchange and put white on top, I'm now trying to paint on my black mask.
It's possible to make this stand out as obviously broken.  Clicking the mask icon itself, right click and select Edit Mask.  At this point, the canvas goes black (as it should), waiting for white paint.
Paint Brush Tool (Width 200px, opacity 100%, Flow 100%, Hardness 0%) -- painting with white didn't work. Color Replacement Brush Tool (Width 200px, opacity 100%, Flow 100%, Hardness 0%) -- works Pixel Tool -- works Closer inspection if the tool bar reveals that Protect Alpha is on!  It was not on for Pixel Tool, and when turned on there, same problem.  Color Replacement doesn't have that option. Mystery solved.
Affinity Photo is working as designed, but the "bug" is that when editing a mask, when Protect Alpha is on, you simply can't edit the mask.  Turn Protect Alpha Off when Editing a Mask.  This will not be obvious to new users (or some old ones) and is great source of frustration.  It'd be nice if either that option isn't present when editing a mask, is ignored when editing a mask, or an assistant lets you know what's going on.

    Hello
Is there a way to put arrow ends on a line?  I need to do this. I could do it in Serif Drawplus 8 but I can't see arrow options for the ends of lines in the sidebar when I use the pen tool.
    Thank you

Incridible that this function is lacking. This app got an ultra modern UI but can't believe I am not able to draw a line then chose an arrow head.
The arrow shape is absolutely not a solution as if i want a curved arrow the head looks very strange.

One of the things that bugs me and I've posted about it before, is that my view % doesn't stick after certain tasks. For instance, cropping or resizing. After doing either one of those, the zoom changes to fit the screen. It drives me nuts. I aways have to change it back to the zoom % I was on before. So I would ask for a setting to NOT auto-zoom in those cases as well.

    You make a valid point.
I think the solution here is to have an option in Preferences for:
Set default document view on open to 100% Set default document view on open to fill view-port

When loading a small image from scratch, the one I'm using is 250x193, Affinity Photo automatically defaults to filling the available area resulting in a pixelated image that's roughly 1000%+ in size.
( It'd be nice if a small image did nothing more than 200% upon first load, which is more in line with the retina displays. )
Anyhow, to quickly set the Zoom back to normal one can double click the Zoom icon (magnifying glass) -- and the image does change size back to 100%.
However, the Zoom tool bar still has the old 1000%+ value.  Meanwhile, the Navigator shows a different Zoom value.
And, if one alters the Navigator zoom slider (the canvas area correctly resizes), then uses the pinch/stretch gesture, and then double clicks the Zoom icon -- the value in the Navigator gets copies to the tool bar, and the Navigator might (if you're lucky) jump back to 100% (often it does not), but the canvas image does.
In short, there's the visual canvas area, the Zoom Tool bar, and the Navigator -- all three fall out of sync, so it's difficult to know at any time which one is the authority for what the current zoom level is.
They should always be in agreement with the same value.

Isn't it easy enough...at least until such time as whatever is actually wanted...to open such text in Word or another word processor, copy & paste (or save/open) into APub?
    line breaks are preserved. Word:

You can also use styles with "next style" option, to flow the text in different frames or pages.
    Flow_address.afpub

    address.xls

What I would do is format the text like this as a plain text file

    !!Smith...
    @@123...
    @@Blanken....
    @@816....
    ##https:....
this can be done easily in a spreadsheet or a Database Export.
Import the text file of 500 entries and do a find and replace using the regular expressions
    find: !!(.)
replace: \1 and include  the Paragraph Style. Name this will set the name and discard the !!
Rinse and repeat for @@ and ## using the appropriate styles.
  14. Thanks

There's an interesting trick to use in APub once you have set your master pages (to get a better mastery of your document): to flow your text in the needed amount of pages, click on the red triangle of the text frame holding ctrl shift.
It will add as many pages as needed.

The "No style" is made of Arial 12 pt with 12 below text style, one of the 10-12 fonts present on all the computers used in browser and as default font for apps that don't install fonts with them.
By default, APub come with a list of predefined text styles, as examples.  You can keep a document with those styles to check how they are made, but I had deleted all of them to keep only a "Base_text" and a "Base_Title" group styles.
"Base" will contains pertinent parameters. For example, Base_text (=body) with justification, hyphenation, smaller size than Header (Base_Title), that'll be left align, bold, in another font.
I'll only have to create new styles based on one of them later, for them to get those proprieties. If at some point, I want to change the font or the colour for the Header, I only have to modify "Base_Title", and they'll use the same font/colour. That's the principle, if the children styles keep the settings to "no change"…

It was a trick for data from a sheet, since it's common.
If your data are in line as in your example, you can keep only a small amount of styles (instead of having 2 for the address), but group those line using line breaks, they'll be treated as a single paragraph. The same for more than one phone number.
You can do this or apply "next styles" and correct each time there's an error… If you work only one on the ducoment, it should be the same, in the long run, if you need to import data more than once, it's better to have the data correct instead of correcting the formating.

For this you need to select more than 1 paragraph, and magic applies:

No need, you just need the styles: name > address > phone > site > name.
Note that the last style need to buckle back to the 1st style, so all the selected paragraphs can be styled.
If at some point there's an error, you forget a line break between web sites, you only need to add it, select this paragraph and all the remaining text and apply the styles appropriately, for example: "Apply 'Site' and next".

It's really simple (less if you want to make stickers for adresses and need to check the margin and position of the frames, but in this case, test printing 1 page and looking it against the stickers page by transparency if the text is well positioned or need to be moved a little depending of your printer).
    For 8 × 2 frames
Create 1 frame of the area of your whole page, use the transform panel and divide width by 2 and height by 8.
You dupplicate this frame to put it on the right.
Next step, you select those frames, use the shortcut ctrl+j to dupplicate them and you move them below the 1st row. If you've done this right in one move, next time you do ctrl+j, the frames should be dupplicated and positioned at the same distance too. You repeat until the end of the page.
    Last step: linking the frames.
    For 8 × 3 frames
Same trick, but the 1st row contains 3 frames (divide by 3) before using ctrl+j.

Once you know the shortcuts, it's easy

wls got a reaction from Old Bruce in BUG: Offset Paragraph Leaves Page
The goal here wasn't to find the missing text (BTW, I did a few back and forths and got to a point where zooming out completely didn't help at all), but rather that incrementing the field in this way with the mouse cursor (on a Mac) made the text move downward, then decrementing the field in this way also made the text move downward. It was like it was altering the position using the value of the box rather than some origin and delta.
A little experimentation showed that this happened when the object with text was selected, opposed to the text cursor being inside the object.
If no one else is able to recreate the behavior as I did several times, I'll see if I can do it again and post a video... if that helps.

Here's a case where you can get text to position itself off the page (very quickly) and not be able to return it to its original position (apparently, even by Undo).
I started with a multi-page document of 12 pages with a two-page horizontal spread starting with the right page.
        R
    L  R
    L  R
    L  R
L Create a large Art Block of text that spans the width of the page, placing it on the lower-third of the first page.
ABC Using the Move Tool, select the text, so it has the blue selection marks around it. Under the View / Studio / Paragraph panel, extend the Spacing item. Change the "Use space before:" option to Always Put the mouse cursor over the Space Before Paragraph icon. Now click and hold down, moving the mouse to the right -- the text will quickly shoot down the page (and often off it onto the subsequent right hand pages).
The points will increment. Continuing to drag, move the mouse back to the left.  Although the points will now decrement back to zero, the text continues to move downward!
It's not possible to move it back by zeroing out the offset. I've been able to get the text to go so far down that it "vanishes" -- that is, I can't zoom out even super-far-away and find anything to select.  Is it gone? Is it just unreachable?

Create some artistic text with two lines:
    ABC
DEF Put the cursor between the D and E characters. In the View / Studio / Paragraph panel, click inside the Space Before Paragraph well, at the end of 0pt. Press the UP Arrow on the keyboard.
The 0pt will turn into 1pt, and the cursor instantly jumps back between the D and E characters.
...this means you can't use the keyboard's up/down keys to fine tune.
