Or this is using the pen tool, two shapes the "hole" (Brown) is on top of the solid letter A (Green).

Make an ‘A’ shape with the triangular counter (‘hole’) filled in. Place a triangle shape on top, select both shapes and click on the ‘Subtract’ icon in the Geometry section of the main toolbar.
