When this happens none of the adjusting sliders work.

I have just upgraded to 1.7.0 and am getting strange artifacts when opening a file, it is random but happening 50% of time if I close and reopen it is ok. I have been using Affinity for over a year and not had any problems running on a Mac Book Pro on High Sierra 10.13.6

This is a great programme have been using it for a couple of weeks but without batch processing of raw files is not going to be enough to move from photoshop which is a pity as the controls are much better than camera raw.
