Ewen got a reaction from KC Honie in Using APhoto v2 - a photographer's POV
Same here. Have already bought a copy of DxO PhotoLab because of C1 has been appalling with supporting new camera models. It's good, but not Affinity good.
Would love to see Serif step into this part of the market. Not sure what limitations LibRaw place on that. I know it's a whole new frontier to develop a RAW Workflow solution, but C1 have botched it and most of us are already here because we wanted to get as far away from Adobe as possible.

Ewen reacted to rvst in Is there a better RAW image development workflow? It still feels very slow compared to Adobe.
I should probably give DxO a look again. I last bought a copy around a decade ago and it was a little bit of a one-trick pony at the time. Based on your comment and the length of time since I last had a copy, it might be a worth a spin

This is as good of a place to put this as any.
I sent this to Serif outside of the message boards with regard to the current Capture One Pro licensing debacle.
I am a retired engineer, strategist, marketer, investment banker, and now photographer/creative. I use Capture One and the full suite of Affinity products.
As I am certain that you are aware Capture One was/is popular in part because they had a robust perpetual licensing model (plus a fantastic product). Many of the same reasons that Affinity apps are very popular.
Capture One has made a move to force users into a defacto subscription model and ANGRY does not begin to explain the sentiment of the ~50% of users that are perpetual licensees.
Opportunity
The opportunity for Serif is for "Affinity Develop", an application that is a competitor to Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, etc. While not a trivial task to develop, the core is already done in Affinity Photo, simply strip out the develop module and wrap a DAM around it and you are ready to go.
I would hope that Affinity Develop (as I like to call it) is in actuality fairly far along. Now would be a GREAT time to "leak" that news.
Threat
The threat is much more subtle, like many C1P users I am now looking at alternatives such as DxO, LR, Topaz Labs, RawTherapee, and Dark Table.
If people bite the bullet and return to Adobe (I am an Adobe refugee from the subscription licensing model) then not only do they get Lightroom but also Photoshop and LR for iPad. Thereby deprecating Affinity Photo.
I am trialing all of the app mentioned above and am leaning toward moving back to LR. It would be fantastic to have a complete Serif Affinity suite including "Affinity Develop". Roundtrips between it and Affinity Photo would be much more elegant than LR and PS and it would mimic (hopefully better) Adobe's camera raw.
Here is some of the anger directed at CO.
https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/7998068628637-Changes-to-the-way-licensing-updates-and-upgrades-work-FAQ
Alternatively a simply a DAM created for AP would be sufficient.
As primarily a photographer, if I chose to return to Adobe (their subscription is much more favorable than CO's) then PS will displace AP. I would rather be horsewhipped than return to a subscription model but CO is forcing our hands. So come on Serif, show us photographers some love!!!
As an aside once the move is made to LR/PS that customer for AP is probably lost. The transition from C1P to LR will be painful and most won't want to make that kind of transition again anytime soon.
I would drop C1P like a hot potato if there was an Affinity solution.

Thank you! That’s it! That feature deserves a button!

Ewen reacted to ChrisGraz in Option to reset picture aspect ratio to original 100%/100%
Hi,
i am searching for any option to reset any squeezed or transformed picture to its original aspect ratio and to scale pictures numeric in %. while the rotation can be set to zero in the Transform Studio there is nothing like "Reset X/Y to 100%". The four different scale-options in the Pictureframe Properties don´t reset to the original aspect ratio of the file once the content is distorted. When working with files like floor plans, it is necessary to make exact changes like: 25% back to 75% etc.
there should be deninitly x% and y% in the Transform Studio. I would like to have the option "Reset X/Y to 100%" at the image properties or some easy way to reset distorted images with a click thanks!

Ewen reacted to R C-R in Reset transform
It resets the object to the current document defaults for stroke and fill attributes, artistic text attributes, and frame text attributes, depending on the type of object selected, but that does not affect an object's transform values.

There is an acknowledged bug where this can happen with IDML imports, so that's probably what you've hit.

Ewen reacted to JonathanBall in Why the Cmd Key Instead of Option Key?
I'm curious to know why the Command Key is the modifier used for center scaling in place of the Option (Alt) Key.
This functionality is one of the biggest hurdles for me in using Affinity programs. Having to constantly think about which keys I'm pressing when I switch to Affinity programs in my workflow is a huge hinderance.
It seems especially strange considering Affinity is an app that's designed for Mac. This behavior goes not just against every other program I've used (not just design) for years, but against the operating system itself.
Two questions:
Why is this well established/familiar UX convention changed? Any hope that this modifier is customizable in this or future versions of Affinity? I still love Affinity, but I'd marry it if I could use my Option Key as I do everywhere else in my workflow.
Thanks for your help! :)
PS: Totally unrelated, but also quite backward... Why is the default appearance set to a black fill w/white stroke? I feel like you guys are just messing with me at this point. Every time I set a default appearance I also have to swap it. Seems strange.

Ewen reacted to R C-R in It there a way to fix Affinity crazy key bindings?
The CMD key has to be pressed only when releasing the mouse button at the end of the drag to copy the dragged object, which I find a bit weird. I would prefer that it worked like the option key does now, but maybe that is just me.

Ewen reacted to taharvey in It there a way to fix Affinity crazy key bindings?
I've been trying not to judge, but a year into using Affinity, the key bindings often make no sense. I don't know where your key bindings derive from, but many common ones are opposite every program I've every used... Adobe, Every MacOS app, the old Freehand & Macromedia stuff.
Why be crazy? Why not use standard key bindings? It's a huge productivity suck.
Duplicate: Option-drag, not Cmd-Drag. (This is universal: every program I can think of on the Mac is option-drag).
The command is already is reserved territory fo, well... Commands! Because you overload it, drag duplication is crazy making. Every time I press command to execute a key binding while dragging... it copies the object! Resize around centers: Option-drag, not Cmd-Drag. Again this almost universal. Please... do not overload the Command key bindings.
Constrain aspect ratio: Affinity has non-locked aspect-ratio when dragging a corner... but opposite behavior with images! Consistent UX expectations is more important than which behavior you chose. Pick one way: Adobe defaults to unconstrained, with shift adds constraints. Omnigraffle, Pages/Keynote, are default constrained, with an unlock constraint button, but you could use shift in reverse.

Ewen reacted to mattspace in Feature request - Fixed Layout ePub
Likewise, I produce Fixed Layout EPUB graphic novel / photo books content for Apple's (i)Bookstore, and while Apple's Pages appears to have added a FXL EPUB option, it doesn't have the layout capabilities of a full-fledged DTP app.
At the moment, my workflow is DTP in InDesign (CS5), output to uncompressed jpeg, process in photoshop to correct size and format, then handcode pages.
An ability to output to EPUB, with user defined templates for how the app places content (eg images as background textures for DIVs defined in CSS), how elements are named etc, would be pretty special.

Ewen reacted to kgq in Feature request - Fixed Layout ePub
Hi - I currently use InDesign to create interactive eBooks in Fixed Layout ePub format. I would love it if Affinity Publisher could also do this and allow me to ditch the last Adobe product I use.

Ewen reacted to NorbertWeiss_1 in No PDF bookmarks
It looks like there is no way to create a PDF with bookmarks? There is no UI for bookmarks in the Export...PDF dialogs, nor are there any bookmarks in a PDF when an AP document with Anchors is exported.
Seems like creating an "Index" doesn't do anything with PDF bookmarks, too.
Since many printed publications are also used as PDFs available online (online increasing, printed decreasing), I'd recommend to add a feature to add bookmarks to PDF files exported from AP.
Win10, AP 1.7.0.249

Ewen reacted to Naughty Sparkle in Feature Wishlist: PDF Bookmarks
I'd like to just put this out here so people can put likes and add visibility for developers. This feature would really help me out. I'm pretty sick of exporting pdf:s and adding bookmarks to it with another software. I wish I could just do them in one software.
