  1. Alfred, Perhaps not strictly necessary but much faster in my case. Psenda, I had these settings on already, but I use millimeters rather than pixels. No matter how I try to realign them the seam is still there. Changing document settings to px doesn't change it either. Anyway, I just realized there is a thousand threads on this already all the way from 2014. Too bad it seems the basic issue is not solvable. I will go with overlapping for now, it is okay in my case.
  2. I am creating some really simple nodes where the main part consists of two rectangles with gradients that meet in the middle. It is necessary with two rectangles because some of the nodes will have two colors. However the nodes all get a thin line in the middle that cannot be removed. The two rectangles are snapped to one another and there is simply no space between them. It does not matter how much I zoom in, the line doesn't get any thicker. If I try to move the rectangles closer, they immediately start overlapping. When I export the artboard as a jpeg file, the lines are still there. Same issue with the top right circle where I have two crescents instead of rectangles.
  3. LibreTraining, The game, Forces of History, is one that I am creating myself: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1661241863/forces-of-history-a-world-history-simulation-game/preview The card images above were just examples from the board game Through the Ages. The font has not yet been decided upon. But creating a font of one's own seems difficult and some icons will probably have color in them. Thanks anyway!
  4. Inline icons is the term I am looking for, thank you h_d. I'm a bit surprised that Affinity does not have this, when they have so many other features! There are some much simpler programs that have this, so I am going to have to rely on one of these instead. Cheers
  5. I'm starting to feel a bit annoying x) but after going through tutorials on data merge for Affinity Publisher 1.9 I still cannot find a way to create text variables the way I described in my initial post. I can import text and image sources from a spreadsheet, yes, but I still have to import them separately to text frames and image frames respectively. But the ability to import text as an image seems to be lacking. To be really clear, I want to create playing cards like these ones, where some text phrases can be seamlessly converted to game icons:
  6. Okay thanks, are there any tutorials on this? Or do you know when the beta will be released?
  7. I read somewhere that you can use a data merge function in Affinity Publisher to create text variables, i.e. if I write "Gain 1 {gold}", I can make the text {gold} be exchanged for a gold icon. Could someone point out where in Publisher this function might be found?
  8. There is an absolutely awful bug going on in my Affinity Designer program. The program simply shuts itself down, and it appears that no file is safe! First it happened when I clicked the "Save" button in the menu - the file isn't saved, it just shuts down, even though I clearly clicked "Save". After repeating this several times, I moved my content to a new file, and then it worked again, however I had to recreate all the global colors and symbols. But now, this file shuts down when I click CTRL+Z! This time it is a bit more difficult to reproduce, but it occurs after I hold shift and double-click on a particular text box. I am not going to be able to use this program if it keeps behaving like this. What can I do?
  9. Doesn't work, sorry. One more thing I could add is that, like I said when I hold shift button I can only move objects down-right/down-left etc (diagonally might be a better word), whereas before I could only move them orthogonally. BUT this is now regardless of whether I have snapping on or not, strange because it seems to have been triggered after I entered the grid manager. The only other thing I looked at was the grid and axis manager but I did not change anything there.
  10. I wanted to snap objects to the horizontal center of a box, but this snapping was very arbitrary, sometimes it worked and sometimes it just wasn't there. So I started experimenting with the settings in the Snapping Manager, and checked various boxes there. Then it suddenly breaks completely and it doesn't matter that I uncheck the boxes again! What happens now is that I cannot even move an object down in a straight vertical line by holding the shift button. Instead the object will move down-right or down-left, never straight down. This behavior remains even when I uncheck ALL boxes in the snapping manager. It also doesn't matter that I restart the file. Only when I go to another file does it work again, even when the settings are EXACTLY the same. So, in short: 1. How do I get snapping back to normal in my file? 2. How do I reliably snap objects to the horizontal center of a box? Thanks. EDIT: I should add that the only snapping that does work now when I check one or more snapping boxes is down-right/down-left/up-right/up-left type snapping. I don't know exactly the difference between the boxes but it doesn't seem to matter what combination I choose. The vertical/horizontal snapping is all but gone.
  11. Alright, it's not going to work like I hoped then, the symbol will not adapt to the font size and so on. It works though, so thank you.
  12. Is there no way to create a custom glyph in Affinity Designer? I need to be able to write text for playing cards where I can mix letters with custom symbols. Have I chosen the wrong software? All I can find in this tutorial is how you can use the Character Map of Windows to manage the glyphs for a font, but it does not seem possible to add new glyphs. An alternative would be if there were text variables that you could insert regardless of font, so that if you wrote "Gain 1 {gold}", it would translate to a text followed by a gold symbol or something. If anyone can help me solve this I will be forever grateful!
  13. Thank you thatGuy! I simply have to keep experimenting and see if I can find that consistency which is lacking right now. Your advice should be enough to get me going. See you later in the Great Kingdom of Harold!
  14. After some experimentation I have now made a much better card design (though it can still be improved of course). Thank you Garry for pointing me in the right direction! Come to think of it, the images don't fit perfectly into this new design pattern. What do you think?
  15. Thanks for the input! I presented a somewhat arbitrary selection of cards, so I understand if it's difficult to know what to make of it. Beautiful examples still! A couple of points if anyone else wants to comment: - The cards have 3 different types of text: ACTION, EFFECT and - (dash), which means "direct effect". ACTION and EFFECT must always be above the image or quote, while the dash must be below it, for reasons of card management. - The secondary color (above the icons) must sometimes be of a completely different color, because the game has a particular color scheme. This makes it difficult to put the two colors close to each other, in case they don't mix well! See attached image. - The cards will be of playing card size, which means that the text in Garry's sketches above would be too small. And there will be a LOT of text sometimes! Still, the bigger the text, the uglier it tends to look. And while I like the idea of different symbols for different actions, the margin reduces the available space for text. Now don't worry about my skeptical tone, feel free to share more ideas, anyone who wishes to! I attach a couple of images with a "typical" card structure, the way it will be for many cards, with actions/effects above, followed by an image or quote, followed by a dash (direct effect).
  16. Greetings fellow travellers! I am designing a board game, both mechanics-wise and graphcially, though I am a real beginner at graphical design so I have outsourced some of the graphcial design, such as the game board and the cover image. What I do want to make myself though are the playing cards. I have been using a simple program since March to create cards, but I am going to use Affinity to create the final card design. Since I am not very advanced, I want to stick to a clean and simple card design, and I still want it to look great! So I would be grateful if you just had a look at the attached cards and say what you think of them. There a five cards I am attaching, and their design is not completely uniform now. I am going to make it easier for you though - just answer the questions below, and then add more comments if you like. 1) The "Travels of Marco Polo" card uses a different font - which font looks better? 2) All cards except "The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact" have a grey border around the main text body. Does it make a difference? 3) The text in "Travels of Marco Polo" is justified (it always takes up a full row) - which looks better? 4) Does the font-size matter? 5) The last card has a "secondary color" (grey) on top - some cards will have this. Would you rather have this somewhere else? (It cannot be below the header.) If you made it through these points, or if you just don't like lists - feel free to add any other comments. Also note that some cards will have images, but some will only have quotes, and a big challenge is to find a quote frame that can be reused on all cards, regardless of the colors of the card. PS. The card icons on top are soon being updated and made more uniform!
