  1. Thank you; a most complete response. It's much easier to use now that a few things have been fixed based on your answer. We have a lot of books done in InDesign as indb files based on multiple indd files. We make books with multiple indd files for several reasons: - Easier to re-order book sections (for example, short stories in a collection) - Individual file sizes are smaller and less likely to get large enough to cause data-handling problems even with color photos on every page - It's easier to repair a corrupted file when it represents only a dozen pages of a book, instead of the entire book being lost. I would really, really like Publisher to support a similar approach to combining multiple Publisher files into a single item, as other people have suggested elsewhere in these fora. Edward
  2. I'm looking into Affinity Publisher as an alternative to InDesign (MacOS 10.15), and have been experimenting with both new docs and imported idml docs. I have a few newbie questions and yes, I have tried searching here and using the FAQs, but haven't found what I'm looking for. Which is not to say it isn't there, of course... 1. I am running a Japanese-native system. I've set the UI to English (since we have English-speaking staff), and the menu is now in English. When I select Help, however, menu items are displayed in English but Help Topics entries (and resulting Help Topic screens) are still in Japanese. I have tried relaunching. 2. I can set the measurements for a new document when I create it, but is there any way to change the measurement used on the fly, while working on a document? 3. The Find function appears to be very weak. Am I missing something or this really all we can search for? InDesign offers styles, fonts, special characters, RegEx, etc. 4. Apparently indb book files are not currently supported. Are there any plans to offer something similar? 5. Apparently export to ePub is not supported. Are there any plans to offer something similar? I suspect I'll come up with more questions later as I do more layout work, but that's a start... Thank you for your time. Edward Lipsett kukrodahan.com
  3. Excellent, thank you. I signed up for the trial, got very busy, and didn't have a chance to actually test-drive the software within the 10-day period. ...which is why I'm asking silly questions here that I should have been able to answer myself... I think I'll go ahead and purchase the software now, though, since we've gotten this far and vertical CJK is not a major issue. Appreciate all the help!
  4. Thank you, Dan. This is certainly promising! Did it report the fonts that were missing? In other words, can you identify what specific fonts are needed by this layout? In theory anytime I move a layout from InD to Affinity I will have the fonts, too, and font assignments should import correctly, but at the very least it's important that the specific font still be identified in the Affinity document, so it's clear what font is missing. Since you didn't mention it I assume this is the case, but if you could confirm I'd appreciate it. Fortunately very few of the books we'd port to Affinity need vertical text, and other than that it looks like Affinity doesn't choke on Japanese-native IDML files, so that's good start! Thanks. Edward
  5. Here is the original indd file (latest cc version on MacOS10.15.6), the output PDF, and the exported idml. Paper size is A4. test.idmltest.pdftest.indd I'm including the indd file in case other people interested in the same question want to have a look at the source.
  6. Thanks, Dan. Let me make a simple indd file, export to idml, and post the indd, idml, and a PDF of the expected result here. Give me a minute or three.
  7. Thank you, Dan. Has anyone confirmed import from a Japanese-native version of InD? Or if nobody raises their hand, is there anyone who would be willing to try on a small sample I send you?
  8. I was unable to locate specific information on this here, so I'm asking... if it's been answered already somewhere, I'd appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. I use the Japanese-native version of InDesign. It has been impossible to send one of my indd files to an English version of InDesign, forcing me to save it into the idml intermediate format, and after it is imported into the English version, then resave as a standard indd file again. I haven't tried this recently so there is a chance this problem has been rectified in later versions. I have a cc subscription running on MacOS 10.15. Question: Before I buy Affinity Publisher, I'd like to know if it can import a standard indd file created in the Japanese version of InDesign. If it's a complex procedure or often causes layout changes, I'd like to know that, too. I can provide sample indd files easily enough if that helps. Unfortunately, I was unable to properly test the trial version of Publisher before my time ran out... Thank you for your time. Edward Lipsett Kurodahan Press Kumamoto Japan
