For those that keep talking about vector brushes, please create a new thread. You are derailing this thread...

artistram3d1 got a reaction from walt.farrell in Version 1.9.1 Update
@walt.farrell
Thanks so much! I didn't realize that there would be an even newer version out so quickly since I just updated just a few weeks prior. Ugh!

The current versions are 1.9.2, not 1.9.0, so the message you're getting is correct.

When I open AD version 1.9, I receive a message that a new version, 1.9.1 is available. I go through all the steps to download and install the new version. When I start up the program again, I still have version 1.9, and once again I receive the message to update. This is like Groundhog day all over again!

As @Komatös says, please check your graphics drivers are up to date. A system crash implies a problem with the drivers, not necessarily in Affinity Photo. If it was just APhoto, then it alone would crash and would not be able to take Windows with it.

Have you already tried deactivating hardware acceleration in APhoto? Another source of errors are in 99% outdated / faulty drivers and missing system updates!
And what if you install the new 1.9.2.1035?

this is not a memory issue, i have 32 gig of ram. besides, i've had much bigger layered documents open before with no crashes.

I have zero doubt that is the case for some. For many others like myself, it's not. And as I mentioned, for users like myself the total picture of where they are in the stream of time and relative to the very real annoyances and disappointments I experienced with Adobe are what tip the scales very far toward the Affinity products. This is the case for me even as they grow the feature set. Affinity covers my needs, and I simply enjoy the tools.
Thankfully there are plenty of other tools out there to satisfy (almost) everyone.

I miss this feature a lot, but it hasn't been a deal breaker for me.

Hopefully Serif is listening. It'll certainly be great to not wait for as long as Paint has been around. 🙂

The problem with threads like this is that a simple gripe of the day frequently becomes a stand of trees that prevents some from seeing the entire forest.
I'm glad I left Adobe behind. It got to the point that they were 1) asking more of me as a customer than I was willing to give up, and 2) they weren’t providing me with what I wanted as a creative pro. I didn’t leave them because they were lacking in features. I left because they ceased to be what I was looking for, and they weren’t supporting me. Perhaps this is the case for some when it comes to the Serif products. Thank goodness there are other tools out there to make everyone happy.
What drew me to the Affinity products years ago—and still does—is that although they may not be as feature-rich as Adobe, they really do listen to user feedback, and they steadily improve in the areas that matter most. They don’t catch and deliver on every single request. But honestly, I can deal with that. For example, this particular feature—Crop to a selection—is quite simple in Photoshop; but if I’m being honest, this isn't a feature that I constantly need. It’s not a deal breaker. I have far more advantages with Affinity software than without. The satisfaction in the workflow and in the results is well worth the cost of the transition away from companies in whom I’d lost faith.

@artistram3d1 That's great news, I'm glad to hear it! Yeah, the Kirby Krackle brush is a real time saver, although there is something quite therapeutic about doing those Kirby dots by hand too. 😅
I hope you enjoy using the brushes!

Hello my Friend!
First off, thank you for responding so quickly!
I restarted Affinity Designer this morning (perhaps I've had it open for too long and the program simply didn't "read" the brushes properly? Only a guess) and the brushes are working perfectly! I'm so excited! I was even more excited when I saw that you had a 'Kirby Krackle' brush! I wish I had this years ago when inking space backgrounds with a circle template and Rapidograph pens! And Zip-A-Tone, too! This is my Christmas present to myself!
🎅
Thank you so much!

If it is a multi layered document you also could make a flattened copy of your selection:
Edit > Copy Flattened
and then
File > New From Clipboard

Sorry, but that is a terrible idea. Not cropping to selection, but destructive cropping which is what it would mean. One of the best things about Photo is a non-destructive workflow, including cropping (normally) which is like having the undo facility. Why would anyone want to change that ? Personally, I would recommend Photo to anybody because it does not throw stuff away. Surely it is better to embrace new improved methods, especially if they could prevent making mistakes. And what is the difference between crop to selection and a normal crop ?
What you want is simple and easy to do in Photo and without losing all the data. Although you can still delete the data easily enough afterwards if you want to but as a two step process, which at least makes you think before deleting.
If you prefer to work in a destructive way that cant be undone, fine. You need a program with a Destructive workflow. Try Photoshop, a destructive cropping process and only ten times the price.
Surely better to stick with Photo though and adapt to a non-destructive workflow though? Personally, I much prefer the Photo non-destructive cropping. If you really feel you still need it, you could put in a feature request.
If you need, it is easy enough to make a crop. Just crop the document as normal, press the C key and draw a crop box, that's it. No need to even make a selection first. Admittedly, the information is still there, Photo is persistent in trying to save you from yourself, so go Document > Flatten and it's all gone for good.
Here are two very easy non-destructive.methods that crop to a selection and still keep the original information
Make a selection first, press Ctrl + J. That copies the selection, and only the selection, to a new layer. copy it, (Ctr + C) then go File > New From Clipboard. It makes a new document exactly to the selection Plus, the original information is kept in the original file for safety.
Alternatively, draw a Rectangle above the the image, right click on the rectangle layer and go Mask to Below. Just the "selection".will be in it. Copy the layer Ctr + C and then go File > New From Clipboard again.
Ctrl + C then File > New From Clipboard is a two stage presses, and the original data is still there.(just in case) which has to be a good thing for safety, right ?. File > New From Clipboard.even has a keyboard shortcut or you can easily set your own.

I totally agree. I've spent over 20 years with Adobe products, mainly Illustrator. I bought all 3 of Affinity's products and will continue to support them. I just hope they make changes soon to not only keep up with Adobe, but surpass them. Subscription fees, who needs that? 😃

Thank you for this information and it's handy in some cases but this workaround would significantly slow me down.
I type my content on a separate app for grammar and spell checking before pasting it to publisher and I want an Illustrator-like eyedropper tool to reduce the number of steps to accomplish this task.
-
artistram3d1 reacted to Elise Kleve in Copying properties from another object
In the recent update (1.8.4), not yet.
I agree. I work on brand guidelines a lot and without an eyedropper tool for copying text and object style is a drag. Time is money and this tool should be implemented before version 2.

Hello, I would like to know if this issue regarding a similar tool to Adobe Illustrator's eyedropper tool is being addressed. I find that the workaround is quite time consuming. Thank you for your attention to this matter and I hope to hear back from you soon.

artistram3d1 reacted to Elise Kleve in Copying properties from another object
I insist the implementation of an eyedropper tool that functions like that of Illustrator's as it's more intuitive.
Copying an object with "CTRL + C" and pasting the object/.text's attribute to another with command "CTRL + V" will overwrite the contents of your clipboard.
