That is probably not a pure vector EPS file, but one that was created by Adobe Illustrator (AI). If I'm right on that, your file requires Illustrator (or some other application, if any) that can interpret the proprietary data that AI has included within the file. The Affinity applications cannot process it, as they do not understand that proprietary data.

Ok...thanks!  I was able to open with photopea (online free program) and see the layer.  I've done this with quite a few eps files, actually.  I just thought I would ask since I have Designer but cannot seem to use for these...

    Hi Nita,

It is unfortunately going to be difficult to advise without a copy of the images but I'd rather you don't breach any licensing agreements you have agreed to. I notice you seem to be having issue when opening the images somewhat unconventionally (pasting them into a document, File > Place etc) if you open one of the files Via File > Open how does it look?

    Thanks

    C

I did not realize that file/place was unconventional.  Am I not supposed to use that function?

I thought that was how one places another image/object into a document you are working on...

It's a puzzler, any chance the file can be uploaded?

The fist can be easily made into a vector.

I assume the view quality setting is set to bilinear (Best Quality) in Preferences > Performance

I didn't have "bilinear" checked.  I did so...

I know the fist can, but I wondered why I had to...ya know?

Not sure if I can do that...it's a stock photo.  You cannot normally share those unflattened.

Not really, some times painting with the gradient tool is way better than applying a layer of gradient over a layer, it gives more control as how the gradient should look like in a simple way, and by should look like I mean different gradient points.

It is good and all but sometimes you just need more fast-multi-point control over the gradient, let's say you added a curve for light but that light comes from different places, with the gradient tool we a re used to is just a matter of simple  swaps in different places and with different directions and you are mostly done. Sure you could use a brush for that instead of the gradient tool, but with the gradient tool the transitions is so much better.

Don't take me wrong, I prefer Photo's gradient over Photoshop at any moment, but I do feel like there's a need for a gradient tool that can also stack gradient instead of stack a simple object over a layer.

    Untitled.mov

I meant...maybe photoshop users are so used to photoshop processes that they have trouble when things don't work the same.

  5. This keeps happening...to EVERYTHING.  This image is 3456x3888.  I only have it zoomed 200%.

I can't do anything.  Everything is doing this.

The fist is 4500 x 5400.  I was trying to make a profile frame for Facebook.  Scale it down and this happens.

Even text is pixelating when I zoom.

I've also been having another issue:  If I "open" a document and then "paste" it into a doc it keeps i2021-07-24.thumb.png.ca839829adeb1af9a8f3052ca96c8883.png88332801_2021-07-24(1).thumb.png.f69b2d231ed1ce4f833bf181919298ef.pngts resolution.  If I file>place, it is a lower res.

Single vs. facing pages are in a PDF only viewing options, means depending on the viewing app you have options to switch between single and facing view. As long the PDF was exported from a layout which has been set to facing pages during layout but got exported as single pages then this PDF will be fine for KDP or any other print shop, too.

If you open a PDF in APub you can switch it to facing pages by activating its checkbox in "Document Setup…" > Layout.

Note: facing pages are sets of two single & separable pages – whereas "spreads" are single pages in the dimensions + the content of two single pages of a facing page document. Spreads in a PDF can't get toggled between single and facing page view, and can't get divided into two pages for correct printing.

Yay!  "Document setup was what it needed.  Thank you!

    Have you tried here?: https://affinityspotlight.com/article/20-top-class-templates-for-affinity-publisher/
When you ask for templates it is probably best if you say what sort of templates you are looking for as “template” covers such a wide range of things. Technical manual? Lifestyle magazine? Business report? Cafe menu? Book? Flyer? Etc. Etc.

    Need a novel

Make your styles in Publisher. Place one of the five word docs in a Publisher doc and do a find and replace on the imported styles then delete the now unused word styles, import the next word document and repeat the find and replace. Save copies frequently. Reapply the text styles frequently.

My self, I would be tempted to nuke everything and work with plain text copies of the five word documents.

How do I make plain text out of word docs?

Not on Macs. If I click anywhere else on the ruler I get the same contextual menu popup that I would if I right clicked anywhere else in the document workspace:

EDIT: This is what I get in AD. I get the same as @h_d in AP. In APub I get yet another menu, but in all 3 apps it is necessary to right click on the left top of the ruler where the document unit is to change it.

I have Windows 10...I get the same pop-up.

The only way you could consider this "ownership" regarding Adobe software would be more as a role reversal. That is, Adobe owns you. What you described here looks more like the company owns you more than you "own" their software.

You are really stretching your definition of "ownership". You should really learn the difference between a service and a product in business. There is a clear distinction between selling a product and selling a service. Adobe used to primarily sell products back in the Creative Suite days, but then later on changed their business model completely to a service model. Serif is doing exactly what Adobe used to do by selling Affinity as a product first and foremost. You can own a product, but for a service you can't.

A good comparison would be taking a taxi or driving your own car. You don't own the taxi just because you pay for it. Once you have paid for a car you own the car. Adobe is the taxi and Affinity is the car.

ummm...I'm not the one saying I own PS...the opposite, in fact.  You are lecturing the wrong one.

That was an "Adobe"-EPS (Adobe puts proprietary stuff into those files). But here, all AI-files in the pack are also included as PNG. Also, the images don't look like they have massive gradients in them, which usually cause most problems when importing "Adobe-EPS".

But it can't harm contacting Pixelbuddha and ask about the PNG's resolution. They should be good for display, but might be too small if the maps should be printed i. e. as a poster or package design.

If it's about starting with designing some maps, free images from vecteezy might be an alternative, at no costs.

Thanks...  I'll check out vecteezy.  I'm not keen on trusting folks over the phone/email/chat...I'll just steer clear

Well, like @iconoclast said, the PNG and suchlike will work. So all the illustrations (islands, buildings, sea monsters, vessels, etc.) are usable. Also the seamless patterns and grids. Those are actually the "more valuable" objects of the pack. As for the brushes, they are not that complicated to reproduce in Designer. (Even easier, if they have a preview bitmap of the brushes in their pack.) They'll just not be true vector, but that shouldn't matter that much in this usecase.

So the pack is quite useful for creating various maps, just the "drawing" of own shapes is restricted unless you recreate the brushes.

    Awesome...THANK YOU!

  13. 24 minutes ago, Andy05 said:

Well, Affinity Designer doesn't support vector brushes at all. You can't even create your own. The current "vector" brushes are bitmaps, which follow a path (except for one or two simple, circled brushes IIRC). So before buying, you need to consider whether the other stuff in the pack provides what you searched for.

    Obviously, I didn't buy it...

I was, also, hoping that someone would recommend alternatives...
