+1 to this topic please. The ability to have a brush preview would be invaluable. I appreciate some might want it so a function to toggle it on and off would be superb. Having read the comments above it is clear that once upon a time this was implemented, so it should be a relatively small thing to re-implement assuming good source code control has been used ;o)

I had deleted the test file I had been using so cannot send it. However I have tried to recreate it and it appears to be working correctly now. Given I was playing around with brushes earlier this leads me to believe that NotMyFault is correct and the erase although it looked at least to my eyes as being 100% hard and fully deleting the marks was in fact leaving trace amounts of ink. which was being picked up by the fill. 

I will certainly be more aware of that going forward.

Thank you that has done the trick. I wont even pretend to understand why it works on the text frame and not when applied to the group, but it is the result that counts. Thanks again for your help. I learn a little more with each problem solved.

I think you want to assign to the outer group a text wrap to have other text wrapping around it? If yes, you have to assign the text wrap to the text frames inside the group and not assigning text wrap to the outer group. I hope this is understandable English?

Same observation here. carl123 is right, there is something weird about clock1.svg.

There is something a bit weird about the Clock1 (linked document)
Even if I delete all other images in the text frame, I can't get any text wrap settings to work with that image
Also, if I copy it to another new text frame, text wrap does not work on it
If I use the replace button to replace it with another image (or rasterise it) then everything works OK
Can you try deleting that image and then adding it again
 
If still not working please upload clock1.svg to the forum for further investigation

Is this the sort of thing you want? See attached image and document.
I’ve used the Pinning – Float With Text functionality, combined with Text Wrap, on the ellipses to get it. Select an Ellipse and open the Pinning Panel (menu View → Studio → Pinning).
My document isn’t formatted very well – I did it quickly – but you can get an idea of what you can do.
