I have been using brushes for a while and all of a sudden they don't work. What is the problem?

Maybe I explained what I was trying to say wrong. I had said I was trying to learn to use the expand stroke feature which is on the menu panel at the top not the layers panel. Hope this is clearer. Thank you -

Hi I have had Affinity Designer for a while and are now really trying to get into using it but I am running into problems with some of the features being greyed out.I am trying to learn how to use the stroke expand feature in the layers panel and it doesn't work. I need some advice. Please help Mary
